Can't restore files (Used password??)
Just purchased TIH 2011, and did my first backup last night. To see how it worked, I wanted to restore a file. Before the backup, I decided that I really needed to password protect my backups, so I added a password to it in the options before I did the backup.
I can browse to the backup, open it up and drill down to the file. I can right-click and select copy, then when I select a location on my hard drive and try to paste the file, nothing happens. First, I would have expected that it would ask me for a password before it would even let me open the backup file, but it did not. So, I was thinking that maybe it'll let you browser the file, but not restore anything (it'd be better not to even let you browser the file). So, I thought, maybe I need to mount it, and maybe that will ask for a password. So, I loaded the ATIH software, went to Tools & Utilities, and clicked on Mount Image. I saw nothing in here about a password either, but went on through the process. The first time, this gave me an error, but I tried it again, and it mounted the backup. I was then able to freely backup and restore files. WITHOUT ENTERING A PASSWORD. That's not very secure. Now, I go back in to try to find the password settings and can't even find that.
Maybe this is just me being unfamiliar with the updated software, but what did I do wrong here?

OK. I did that, but I still cannot find the password option anywhere.

Jesse,
Thank you for the follow-up.
Would you mind recording a short video and upload it to our ftp server? I will send you a private message with the ftp link in a moment.
Can you show us how the backup is created and your actions afterwards.
Thank you.

I can...however, I just initiated a support chat and here is what I found. If I load up ATIH, and click the Operations link just below the "Back up now" button on an existing task, select Edit backup settings, then from this screen, if I click "Disk backup options", there is no "Backup protection" section. It goes from "Image Creation mode" directly to "Pre/Post commands". However, if I click on "Disk and partition backup" (the first option on the main screen), then go to "Disk backup options", it says "Image creation mode","Backup protection", "Pre/Post commands". I thought that I was going nuts before, but this explains why. When I installed ATIH 2011, I immediately went into Disk and participant backup to create my backup. Saw the protection, and put a password in. So, I've got 2 questions:
1) My backup does NOT appear to be password protected. I can locate my backup, double-click on it and browse files in the backup without it ever prompting me for a password. Why?
2) Is it actually password protected? Even though I put a password in, it does not appear to actually be password protected, and when I go into "Disk backup options" for that saved backup, it does not have the "Backup protection" option at all. Why?

Jesse,
My experience in this situation is this:
I use password protection all the time but add the protection as part of the task creation.
If you create a task without password protection and do a backup, the backup will not be password protected and you are prohibited from adding a password via any future task edit or backup creation.
If the password is saved as part of the backup, you will need to provide a password before you can perform any function--even to view it.
My guess is that your addition of the password protection did not get saved to the task. In prior builds, task edits did not always get saved; or at least whenever you made edits, you had to save the changes from the "backup scheme" tab in order to get the changes saved. This problem of edits not being saved was part of some builds prior to 6696. I am not sure whether the save issue extends to the current 6696.
My suggestion would be to start over with a new task and add the password as part of the initial task creation.

OK. I've removed the old backup and started a new task (at least I think I did). There was no option to schedule it, all I could do was select "later" from the "backup now" button. So, I selected later, then turned the schedule on and selected my nightly backup. I will check this tomorrow and see if it backed up properly.
Thanks,
Jesse

Jesse,
Simulate editing the new task and go to the backup options. You should find that the password option is not listed and not available for changing. This is the norm once a password has been assigned and a backup created.
If you are new to TI or version 2011, there is a great deal of information and illustrations available in the "How to" section listed in green in my signature below.
Good luck.

That is what I saw (or didn't see... the "backup protection", that is) when I did the backup for the first time, however, it still was not password protected. We'll see if the brand new backup that I just created in the morning.
Thanks,
Jesse

Ok, that worked. When I try to access my backup, it immediately asks for a password (which is what I would expect), and I was able to copy a file out of the backup. So, I'm all set.
Thanks,
Jesse
