Verifying backup takes a very long time

Thread needs solution

I'm using Acronis True Image 2020 to do a daily backup of my laptop (500 gb + of a 1TB SSD).  The daily incremental backup usually takes less than an hour but  the verify process can last all night.

Am I doing something wrong? What additional info do you need to address this question?....RDK

RDK, the simple suggestion here is to turn off the validation for your backup task and if needed schedule validation as a separate activity.

Personally, I do not use validation unless there is a specific reason for it.

Validation in ATI 2020 has issues in that it validates all backup chains thus the increased time needed as your chains increase!  This is fixed in ATI 2021 with an option to validate only the most recent backup 'slice' instead of everything!

To put this in context, validation only confirms that the data held in the backup files (.tib or .tibx) remains unchanged from the time it was written to disk.  It does this by recalculating checksum values for each block of the file(s) and comparing these with values embedded in the file(s).  What validation doesn't do is guarantee that there are no corrupted files or malware etc captured in the backup image that were already present in the source data!

Steve....Thanks, I'll turn validation off, and then weekly do a separate validation step.

Was the problem also in the 2019 version?  I don't recall having really long running backup (and validation) jobs?

I'll consider taking Acronis' subscription model for TI to get me to 2021 or 2022....RDK

The problem was introduced with ATI 2020, so didn't see it with 2019 and earlier.  There is no 2022 version - that has been rebranded as ACPHO with all the bundled antivirus stuff on subscription only.

You should still be able to get a perpetual licensed copy of 2021 on Amazon etc if you want it but it also has the new Cyber Protection stuff bundled and running as background services regardless of all being 'turned off' in the settings!

Personally, I would stay with 2020 and just use validation on demand as needed!
