Unicast, multicast and network disruption

Thread solved

I run a student lab that has 25 desktops running XP Pro. I'm considering switching from Ghost to Snap Deploy but I have some questions. When using a Ghostcast server, our network monitor always calls saying that the Ghostcast session which is configured to use 'Direct Broadcast' disrupts the network to the extent that they aren't even able to monitor the main router that services the entire School of Medicine. I've tried changing to Unicast and Multicast but I think the same thing happens. I can't remember but I think I use 'Direct Broadcast' because it's faster than the other two.

Can I expect the same problems with Snap Deploy? All our network routers and switches are Cisco but I know nothing about managing them or what it would take to diminish the chances of the type of broadcast storm that I experience when deploying windows to our student lab.

Is there anything that can be done to eliminate this problem or is it a architecture issue? By that I mean, do our network people need to figure out a way to segment us from the main backbone when it's time to do a deploy so to not take down the network? I guess it's like a denial of service attack.

Thanks.

We were having the same issues and I took my Acronis Snap Deploy 4 PXE server off our main network and configured my own personal network using cheap Netgear switches. You will need to use a DHCP software for your network but there are a few free ones out there. I use the free TFTPD32.exe software and once you get the configuration figured out, it works like gem and no more networking issues.

Good luck!

We tried to use a different subnet to resolve the problem with Acronis Snap Deploy 4 affecting the rest of the network - no luck!
We were only trying to image two PCs which were loaded with the Snap Deploy 4 Agent via CD. A dedicated network apart from the domain may be the only way to go.

Update: I changed the TTL from 15 to 1 which fixed the network disruption problems.

10 Years later I want to say thank you @Coolt77 !! I got the same problem with ASD 6 Build 3030. I tried out tip to set the TTL from 15 to 1. Before I tried 5, but that didn't work out. Even 1 doesn't really solve the problem up to 100 % but I deployed 8 Laptops today.

I love Acronis Snap Deploy, but sometimes it is a PITA -_-

Hello Manuel,

if you have some time for the investigation, we'd recommend raising a support ticket, so that our engineers can look into the situation and fins the root cause of the issue.

We don't have any maintenance at the moment, but if acronis is also interested in finding the bug, you're more than welcome to help us. I think other customers would also benefit from it :)

Best regards, Manuel
