file_protector.sys

Thread needs solution

Hello!

Since I updated my laptop to Windows 11 it starts a few times a day from alone while working but most time, when I do not use it. Serching for a reason I used a "Crash-Tool", which told me the following (I use Acronis True Image 2021)

------------------------------------------------------------

Crash Dump Analysis

Crash dumps are enabled on your computer.

Crash dump directories:

C:\WINDOWS

C:\WINDOWS\Minidump

On Wed 22.09.2021 09:59:03 your computer crashed or a problem was reported crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP This was probably caused by the following module: file_protector.sys (0xFFFFF80061A30A48) Bugcheck code: 0x135 (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFF82086D996370, 0xFFFFF80061A30A48, 0xFFFF860AB166B740)

Error: REGISTRY_FILTER_DRIVER_EXCEPTION

file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\file_protector.sys

product: Acronis File Protector

company: Acronis International GmbH

description: Acronis File Protector

Bug check description: This bugcheck is caused by an unhandled exception in a registry filtering driver.

This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.

A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: file_protector.sys (Acronis File Protector, Acronis International GmbH).

Google query: file_protector.sys Acronis International GmbH REGISTRY_FILTER_DRIVER_EXCEPTION

---------------

Conclusion

One crash dump has been found and analyzed. A third party driver has been identified to be causing system crashes on your computer. It is strongly suggested that you check for updates for these drivers on their company websites. Click on the links below to search with Google for updates for these drivers:

file_protector.sys (Acronis File Protector, Acronis International GmbH)

If no updates for these drivers are available, try searching with Google on the names of these drivers in combination with the errors that have been reported for these drivers. Include the brand and model name of your computer as well in the query. This often yields interesting results from discussions on the web by users who have been experiencing similar problems.

Read the topic general suggestions for troubleshooting system crashes for more information.

Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.

Franz, see KB 65464: Acronis True Image 2021: Windows services and processes for a list of these components installed / running for this application.

Initially, I would suggest doing a Repair Install of ATI 2021 to ensure that everything is as it should be after the upgrade to Windows 11.

KB 60915: Acronis True Image: repairing program settings - for details.

Next, please ensure that if you are using the new Acronis Cyber Protection feature of ATI 2021 that you do not have any other active antivirus application running.  There should only be one such security application running.

KB 67117: Acronis True Image 2021: using two or more antivirus solutions on the same computer is not recommended

Thank you for your quick reply! I wanted to do first the Repair Install, but for some reason, I dont know  why, if I want to sign in in my account, to download the lastest version, I get the message that the site is not available for me. I tried it with different browsers, but always the same.

Franz, you can download the latest ATI 2021 build version from the Acronis Product Updates page - my link is to the en-gb English page, so you may want to change that part of the URL to de-de if you want the German page etc.

https://www.acronis.com/de-de/support/updates/index.html

I am sorry, but the site "https://download.acronis.com/AcronisTrueImage2021.exe" is not available for me too. I think I have to solve that problem first. Its only for the this site and for my dropbox if I want to enter the site from my browsers. From my mobile with WLAN its available.

Thanks!

Franz, are you using a VPN or a Proxy server?  I have not seen anyone else reporting any issues with accessing the Acronis websites, and have no issues myself.

No, I dont use. Its not the whole website, only if I want to login or use the site you told me. For example, the whole website dropbox.com is not accessable for me. I did not find a solution yet.

Now I found a workaround with my mobile to download it. I will try the Repair Install tomorrow.

Thanks!

Hello!

I did the Repair Installation but now I have lost my registration and it is not possible to transfer my registration to the repaired installation. I opened a support bill now.

Thanks!

Franz, if your registered product is listed in your Acronis Account, then just signing in with your account credentials should be sufficient to get activated.

Unfortunately, this is a buggy driver; it causes crashes on my system as well, especially if Driver Verifier is running.  The best/only thing you can do is turn off the "protection" feature in Acronis and use an alternative anti-malware solution.  Nothing you can do yourself will make the driver behave itself.

If you got a minidump instead of a full memory dump, you can try uploading your mini dump to Acronis support so they can troubleshoot their buggy driver; unfortunately in my case, Windows created a full memory dump, and I don't really want anyone at Acronis to have access to all my personal data that was on my machine at the time it crashed, so the best I could give them was a stack trace with register data.

Hi Nicklas, thank you for the suggestion. In fact, once having fully deactived the acronis protection everything is running smoothly. Problem: never install another anti-virus!!!! even with acronis anti-virus switched off, it will crash with the other antivirus if both installed in the PC. I wonder why Acronis is not finding a better partner for the antivirus, and let the protection software be completely deactived, BUT REALLY DEACTIVATED, not like now with the software permanently loaded and causing all this mess...
