just got this program and have a question

Thread solved

i got a pny ssd drive and it came with this program to allow me to clone my original hd. so i cloned the hd to the ssd drive and installed the ssd drive. now i have the hard drive setting here, so can i use this hd as a backup drive and if so how would i use it for backup? do i open the acronis program and navigate to the tools and select the backup and then let the app do the job or is this not practical?

being this program cloned my original hard drive and i then installed that ssd hard drive in my pc it seems logical to use that usb adapter to just backup the ssd drive back to the original hard drive. but what i do not want is for the backup to be done so that if i ever had to reinstall the original hard drive because i was backing it up from the ssd drive it would now be unusable?

also i don't want to use the clone feature as that took over 2 hours to do. currently, i use Karens replicator and just copy the doc, downloads, and photo folders as i can get all the apps back from the download folder. and that takess maybe 5 minutes.

or does the acronis program have a feature that only copies the changed files on the ssd drive back to my original drive using the usb adapter?

thanks

Bob, welcome to these public User Forums.

See KB 2201: Support for OEM Versions of Acronis Products which applies to all OEM versions of ATI supplied with hardware purchases.

You can use your original HDD as a backup drive by connecting it via your USB adapter after your computer has booted into the Windows desktop.

It would be best to reformat the original HDD from within Windows before storing any backup files on it.  You can do this from Explorer by right-clicking on the HDD and taking the option to format the drive.  Alternatively, you can also use the Acronis application to do this by opening the Tools section then using the 'Add new disk' option to fully wipe the HDD and prepare it for being used by setting the partition scheme to either MBR or GPT, then creating a new single NTFS partition on the drive.

Note: please be careful that you select the correct disk drive for either of the above operations!  Hence why I suggest you connect the HDD after Windows has booted, so that you can see the differences in Explorer for extra drive letters being added when the HDD is connected versus those coming from the SSD used to boot Windows.

Once you have the HDD ready to use for backup / data storage, then you can use Acronis to make any backups of either the whole SSD or of specific files & folders from it, or you can continue to use a synchronisation program such as Karen's for the latter purpose.
