Backup problems "failed to open data stream" and other issues

Thread needs solution

My backups have gone haywire. I first noticed this after my computer froze (for unknown reason) and I had to force power off (backups were NOT running at that time). I'm using ATI 2015 on Windows 10 Home 21H2.

I've had a lot of problems with ATI over the years and usually deleting all the backups and creating new ones will get things working again. Not this time.

I created a new backup which is set to run once weekly with incremental backups. Automatic cleanup is set to store no more than 1 full version after 3 incrementals. Do not delete first version is unchecked.

The first full backup seems to work fine, then every 12 minutes (instead of once a week as it is set to do) it starts an incremental backup. After those, it gives an error "unable to open data stream."

I ran a system report but forgot which files are usually asked for to diagnose, so please remind me what to attach. Thanks.

I have never had this error message. I did find some Knowledge Base documents that may be of assistance (but they do relate to earlier versions of ATI so they may be of no help at all). ATI 2015 introduced major changes so the cause could be different.

24504: Acronis True Image Home 2011: "Failed to open data stream"

27618: Acronis True Image Home Errors Out with "Failed to open data stream" on Consolidation

I would check to the backup configuration to make sure that the settings are correct/have not been corrupted.

Have you looked at the log files? Use the MVP Assistant update for Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (Version 1.1.6.0) to look at the log files. Steve Smith has identified the files to be ooked at:

If you have Disks & Partitions backups created on ATI 2020 or later using .tibx files, then look in the Backup Worker logs.

If you have Files & Folders backups using .tib files (or Disk backups from earlier versions using .tib files) then look in the Demon logs.

Other logs are shown by the MVP Assistant under the 'Active Logs' heading of the Log Viewer page of the Assistant.

Thanks. My backup settings are all correct. I downloaded the MVP but all I can see are the "active logs" and I don't see anything there from the last few days.

I did dl a system report but not sure what files within that report are relevant. I've browsed through the files in the report but need help narrowing down what to look for or attach here.

Even after I manually stop the backup, it keeps trying to backup every 12 minutes and is filling my drive, all the while giving me errors.

The first thing is to stop the backup from running. Can you go into the task configuration and change the settings so that it does not run automatically. If that is not possible, try deleting the backup tasks. It is a long time since I used ATI 2015, but if you select the backup task in the ATI 2015 GUI, and right click, there should be either an option to remove the backup task (the backup files stay in place) or delete, which they gives you the option of either just deleting the task or deleting the task and the backup files.

Unfortunately I have no experience with system report analysis, however there are others frequenting this forum who have some expertise in doing so.

Yes, I have just been deleting the entire backup and starting from scratch, but it keeps doing the same thing.

There is no more email support for my version. I get that what I have is antiquated but the main reasons I haven't upgraded to the newest Cyber Protect or whatever they are calling it now is because

A. It's $55 every year for what I used to get for perpetual license for a one time fee.

B. It's been so glitchy since day one, I was always having to re-install and re-do all my backups, which just didn't give me a whole lot of faith in the product.

Hopefully someone can help me here, otherwise I guess my options are pay the $55 a year and hope it works better or shop around. Thanks.

The logs for ATI 2015 may hold some clues as to why you are seeing this error but you will need to use the older Log Viewer tool from the Acronis Community tools KB (link below) as the logs are in an older format not handled by the new MVP Assistant tool.
