Split an existing backup image

Thread needs solution

I have acronis true image home 11 and a complete backup image; about 35gb.
I need to split the image into 8gb files to burn to dual layer dvds for off line storage,
How can i do this? I cant make a new backup of the image and set splitting to 8gb.

Thanks
Terry

Noramlly, it is recommended that you just make a new image.

Try downloading The Filesplitter http://www.dekabyte.com/filesplitter/download.html
and using it. I did a test split on an archive some time ago and it worked. There may be others as well.

What ever program you decide to use, be sure to Validate the recombined file before you assume that all is well.

I would make the splits to HD. Then reassmeble the splits and Validate. If that works then, burn the pieces to DVD and be sure to use the burning programs "validate after burning" feature.

Terry:
Please make sure that you can recover data from DL disks (or even from single layer disks). My TI experience with images to hard drives has been 100% good, while my experience with images on DVD disks has been 100% useless. Never worked.

Do a test using at least two optical disks and then see if you can Verify, Mount, and Restore.

You could be bitterly disappointed some day if your DL disks cannot be restored from.

Fungus

Fungus makes a very good point.

Also, you would likely find that it would be a lot faster to copy the DVDs to a HD before attempting a restore. TI does not read all of DVD1, then DVD2, etc. You will find that you are swapping them many times.

Given the reasonable price of HDs, I have stopped using any DVDs for my images.

You should also do the Validate and Restore using the TI rescue CD which is Linux, not Windows, based. There are issues sometimes with the Linux environment not having good hardware support for some devices and it is the TI rescue CD you have to use to restore your image to a new HD.
