I renamed a backup - now i cannot restore it

Thread needs solution

I am using protect home office. I noticed the backups that I created have a long series of numbers and alpha characters as part of their name and filename. I saw the option to rename a back so I renamed it to something that makes sense. Now however I have lost the option to restore the backup. The message says 'no data to recover yet'. Plus it did not rename the backup filename on disk. Now what has happened? Why cannot I restore this backup simply because I renamed it?

This can happen under various conditions. I would try validating the backup (to save time try validating most recent backup rather than the entire backup); you can also try selecting the most recent file for the backup in Explorer, then double clicking which will open the backup. Hopefully one of these will get the problem sorted.

There is no option to validate the backup. The ... menu only shows a few options now rather than the long list of options from other backups.

I fixed it by booting off a USB repair drive and restored a backup dated later which restored the C: drive before I did the rename.

Why is there information about a backup file that is stored outside the backup file? That;s the whole point of a backup. I should only need the backup file to restore it and it should not depend upon the original HDD.

Darren, your image in the original post is confusing to me as it shows two backup tasks, both to the same destination folder. The one named Samsung... has a green check mark indicating it was backed up successfully. The one named SSD... shows no indication it was backed up.

As I read your post, it looks kind of like you created a new backup task and renamed that rather than renaming the Samsung... task. Was that the one you intended to rename?

The following is taken from page 73 of the ACPHO 2021 user guide:

  • Rename (not available for backups to Acronis Cloud) - allows you to set a new name for a backup in the list. The backup files will not be renamed.

In general, it's not a good idea to run two backup tasks to the same folder. It can make things confusing, especially since there is linkage between backup files within the chain.
