Boot media failed

Thread needs solution

Hi

I have tried booting with the latest iso from the website and also with the media created in true image home 2011 but every time get to "starting acronis loader....." and no further,

I assume this is a driver issue. I do have AHCI enabled in the BIOS, but need to have this to see all my drives. I can boot from other media n(eg windows installer) in the cd drive I am using.

I am rather shocked to see there is no support available other than this forum, so hope someone can help me with this.

Thank you

Ian,

If you are still within 30 days of your purchase then you can get Acronis support by clicking on the Support option at the top of the forum.

As you say, this is probably a Linux drivers issue.

Does the normal boot media as made from TIH itself not work as well? The ISO version in your account will use a different kernel to that provided by TIH and the ISO version often has more up to date drivers.

If you switch AHCI off in the BIOS does the CD then boot? Obviously you need to switch it back on when bootingn into Windows.

What chipset does your motherboard use?

Do you have any card readers or USB hubs attached to your PC?

If your PC is a laptop do you have a fingerprint recognition gismo?

You might be able to get the CD to boot as is, if some boot time switches are tried - these are listed at the end of the TIH User Guide under Troubleshooting.

If one of these switches works, there is the option within TIH to burn the CD with the command line switches embedded in the Acronis loader.

Hi

Just tried Norton Ghost 15 custom disc and that worked fine

So, must be a Linux driver issue. Hopefully someone can tell me how to figure out what is missing, I am using a Supermicro x7da3 board without the SAS backplane, just the SATA controller in AHCI.

Thank you.

Wireless keyboard or mouse by any chance? The 2011 rescue CD (from installed TIH build or downloaded ISO) hang my machine if I use wireless. Wired USB kbd and mouse work fine.

In my case, the hang is after I get to the Acronis splash screen.

Just a WAG,
Bill

Hi

Thank you for the thoughts. I jhave tried both types of media. I think it probably is the AHCI, but turning it off means I will not see two of the hard drives--which are necessary.

I have obtained a RAID card and will be reconfiguring the system, at that point will switch of AHCI and will be able to see if it works.

Did not try the boot switches yet.

I am past the 30 days as I bought this upgrade and did not install for a while....

The AHCI is controlled by an intel shipset, board chipset is Intel 5000x

I posted an earlier comment to 17126 Another acronis loader boot failure... which should more appropriately been entered here. Maybe this will save others some frustration and time.

As mentioned in 17126 I've been struggling with creating bootable media and have run some limited tests. I've run more controlled tests and I now am convinced there are some acronis bugs in media creation for Disk Director ADDH2011 and True Image ATIH2011 pre Build 6696, as well as ATIH2010. ADD10 and ATI-11 seem ok.

On my old Asus A7S333 w/xp sp2 I removed all acronis products and then installed ATIH2011 build 6696. I created a boot media iso with windows defaults and then created a CD on my Lenovo 3000 C200 w/xp sp3 (because it has a newer dvd drive). The CD booted fine on the Lenovo and ASUS PCs and the resulting Acronis boot menu works fine for launching both TI and DD.

Reflecting on my tests reported in 17126 I was using only the newest ADD and pre-build 6696 ATIH. I decided to install ADDH2011 on my Asus (i.e. DD install after TI install). So using ATIH I created an iso and cd as above. The CD would boot and menus ran fine on the Lenovo but on the Asus the boot failed with "Acronis Loader: Unable to run Boot Menu ..." error. Bugs maybe??

I then removed ATIH2011 from the Asus and reinstalled it so it would be installed after ADDH2011. I launched ATIH2011 and made a boot iso->CD. This CD booted fine on both PCs; the ADD application launched but did not display properly on the Asus (has old video card in it, but previous Para 3 CD ran fine??)

Not knowing if ATIH media builder code supplants the previously installed ADD's I tried creating the boot media using the ADDH application. This CD booted fine on the Lenovo and but failed with the "...Unable to run Boot Menu..." error. Fairly conclusive ADDH2011 has a problem.

I upgraded my ATIH in Aug 2010 and ADDH in Oct 2010. Media builder has never worked for me until ATIH2011 Build 6696. Acronis doesn't acknowledge a problem or of fixing media builder, but I believe they've included a driver or something which allows it to work. As of ADDH Build 2121 (the latest) it still does not work. I believe it is an unacknowledged bug that probably has given us users fits trying to resolve.

I would like to try booting on Vista and Win7 with all these CD variants I've build so I'll understand if this problem extends to those OSs as well.

My suggestion, at least for XP users, is to build your boot media with ATIH2011 build 6696 or use the iso file you can download iso from the Acronis site. If you have only earlier versions the ATI-11 and ADD10 seem to be fine for me (remember tho 2011 images are not backward compatible).

It seems Acronis does not provide a bug reporting system and I refuse to pay for their support for reporting a problem that is theirs. Maybe someone from their QA will read this and fix ADDH2011.
