Cannot find backup scripts

Thread needs solution

I am running True Image Home 10 on a computer that was hit with the Hard Drive Diagnostic virus, which is an extortion program that prevents the system from working until you pay to unlock it.

While the system was infected I tried booting to the Acronis recovery routine. It found no usable backups. When I booted with Ubuntu I found the Acronis partition and numerous backups.

I was able to clean it booting from Ubuntu and removing files that were identified on several forums. The system is now working well except for some sort of a Google toolbar hijack that is steering searches through the toolbar to an advertising site.

Scans with Malwarebytes, AdAware, AVG, Zone Alarm, CW Shredder, and others initially found traces of infection but bit by bit I was able to remove everything, although I have not yet conquered the toolbar problem. A straight Google search does work.

Now that the system is working Acronis runs but when I create a script it cannot find it. I have re-installed and I have used the schedule cleaner to no avail. If I create a new script I can find the script file, however, it is a double-dotted file, that it, it has two extensions and not one. I tried renaming one to the proper extension and it still did not work.

It should be noted that the system is used by someone who had Active X, Java, and all the other malware magnets disabled. It does not run Flash. It never goes to questionable sites. How this bug got there is beyond, but I am likewise careful with my main machine and I recently got hit.

At this point I am willing to reformat the hard drive but I hate to go through all of that. I may try installing XP Service Pack 3, which is basically a Windows re-install, and updating Internet Explorer.

Any insights anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated.

The script files have the .tib.tis extension. Do not rename it.

Thanks.

They are there, when I use the utility to delete all of them they are gone. When I re-create them they come back but Acronis does not recognize them.

In other words, I do not have a way to back up that computer.

Robert,

Are you using TIv10 or TIv2010? On which operating system?

OK. This is good.

Can you explain what you do when you say that ATI 2010 doesn't see the scripts?

If I create a job the script file will appear in the requisite folder. If I try to run the job Acronis will tell me the script file does not exist.

It does exist because Acronis just put it there. I can see it. I can delete it via the GUI and the script file will go away so I am looking in the right place.

The program is totally useless at this point. It will not run a backup of any sort.

Robert,

Can you post some screenshots of what you are seeing? I read your posts and I am wondering if there isn't some sort of misunderstanding...

Most certainly, any picture you can provide would help.

Robert,
One of the main functions of the TI Rescue CD is to duplicate your backup onto a new or old disk via either the cloning or restore method.

The restore method should enable you to restore your system back to what it was on the date/time of your backup creation. If the compute was not infected at the time of the backup, there should be no reason why you cannot get back to that point in time. Using the Rescue CD removes Windows and the virus effects from being involved in the restore.

Assuming that when you created the backup, you checkmarked all the partitions so all the partitions are included inside the backup. Generally speaking, these are the recommended procedures

If using the old drive as the target.

1. Boot from the Rescue CD
2. Use the Acronis Add Disk option and delete the old partitions from the target disk.
3. Use the Restore option and checkmark the disk as to what is to be restored.
4. On the screen where you select the target disk, also
if given the option, also checkmark the 'Recover disk signature" option.
5. complete the restore and shutdown.
6. Reboot with only the single restored disk connected. You want Windows to only see one drive being connected.

This procedure is covered in detail in the Restore guide in item #3-A of my signature index below.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried restoring from a prior backup but Acronis could not find any backup sessions. The machine is running again but I cannot create any new backup sessions because Acronis cannot find the scripts it just saved. That machine is at risk.

I currently have two systems that cannot run Acronis and I am becoming very concerned that it will never work again. The one had a virus and that may be why it can't find the scripts. The other was just updated to ATI 2011 on Windows 7 64 bit and it will not run the GUI except one time. Worse, it seems there is no option for individual folder backups, only a full partition or the User folder on the C drive. I don't store data in that folder or on the C drive.

I used to love Acronis but lately it is letting me down when I need it the most. My confidence level with Acronis is at an all-time low at this point. It has saved my hide a number of times but right now it is putting me at risk.

I run NetBackup at work on Unix, Windows, and Linux. I manage the backups for around 400 servers including a number of remote sites. I have also used ARCserve extensively, at one point running a main installation and 38 remote sites. In other words, I am not a novice to the backup business but I cannot get seem to get Acronis to work any more.
