Cyber Protect Home Office "Upgrade"

Thread solved

I looked at the FAQ on this but still not sure.  I have older perpetual versions of TrueImage.  However my current version is subscription, and is Cyber Protect Home Office.

I keep getting a popup that says my license allows a free "upgrade" to Cyber Protect Home Office....which I am already running. Is it trying to update one of my old versions (not currently installed but on my account) or is it an update to my current Cyber Protect Home Office?

Thanks,

BJB

Do not take the upgrade offer on any of your older ATI perpetual license installs unless you want to enter new subscriptions for those machines!

There is a new version of ACPHO build #40107 that was released last week, so if you already have an older build installed you should look at upgrading.

See sticky topic: NEW Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office is released!

Note: the new version allows for a Custom install where you can select to not install some of the extra features of ACPHO if these are not needed.  If you want to enable Windows Core Isolation, then you should not install 'Try&Decide tool' which installs the tib.sys driver that stops this Windows feature from being enabled!

Thank You Steve, you are always so helpful.

I have to assume then I am getting that prompt for an old perpetual license on my account.  However on the pc in question I am using 1 of my 5 PC subscription license I have. With yours and the forums help, very happy with how it is working!

However, I just opened CPHO on a laptop that has absolutely never seen anything but the subscription install license. It also says "you are eligible to upgrade".  Very odd.

Thanks,

BJB

I apologize for the delay but now getting back to this. And thanks for the prior comment. Under my account I have 2 products that are active and supported.  Under "Support"

Acronis Cyber Protect Home office subscription

Acronis cyber protect home office cloud

When I start ACPHO on my PC it says I am running build 39900.

Under account within the program it says a new version is available.

Right clicking on the Acronis Taskbar icon it says as noted above "It's here:Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office. Your subscription entitles you to a free UPGRADE"

Under that it says "Update available. You are eligible to upgrade to Acronis Cyber Protect Home office "

I am alreasy running ACPHO.  Can somone please let me know how I should update my build.  Is this just confusing upgrade vs update language issue?

FWIW I have a friend that runs ACPHO and he has the same question.

Thanks,

BJB

As you already have a ACPHO subscription, then you should be able to simply upgrade via the option shown on the Account page in the main GUI - the latest build is now #40173 which was released in the last week.

The alternative option is to download the latest installer and run the installer yourself where you will see an option to do a Custom install that will lead to the screen I posted earlier that allows you to choose which features / components to install.

BJB, The naming situation got weird when they switched a year ago from True Image Home to Cyber Protect Home Office. With True Image, each new version identified the year as well so it was easy to tell the difference between an update to a version and a new version. The last version of ATI was 2021.

With ACPHO, they have not included the year in the name, and they also only sell it through the subscription model. What is not clear is how they publicly differentiate a new "version" from a simple "update".

Given that you are running 39900, I believe you are on the first iteration of ACPHO, originally released September 2021 but it's final "update" is build 39900, released in May 2022. If this was named right, it should be called ACPHO 2022.

The latest version was build 40107 released on August 30th and an update to build 40173 was released a few days ago. This version should be ACPHO 2023. But again, they are not using the year in the name.

The easiest way to tell is to look at the full version number, which can easily be seen by using the MVP Assistant and selecting the Acronis Configuration page. The current version is 27.3.1.40173. The first part tells you the major release. While I don't have build 39900 available now, I assume the full version starts with 26.

Hope this helps.

Thanks to you npboth for the great info!  Bottom line, I need tomupdate. I do not use the anti-virus so I may go that route.  Besides the naming convention change, they should really just call any of these updates....

Thanks!

BJB

BJB, if you don't use the anti-virus stuff, the ability in the current version to not install that is a nice feature.

Quick question. Can I assume if I use the standalone installer it also keeps all my settings etc. same as if I update/upgrade from the account link?

Thanks,

BJB

If you are installing over an earlier version, it should do OK to keep your settings.

On the other hand, you might want to back up the settings just to be on the safe side (look for Export/Import of backup settings).

Good advice. Thanks!

I thought I would report back since I had to run this update on a couple of machines.  Whether standalone or via the "you have a new version link" from under account, if you hit "custom update" after you clink on the link, you also get the option to not install anti-virus.

That being said, even on a very fast PC, the "updating progress bar" takes a long time to progress. So much so I thought it was hung up. Not sure what takes that long (this is after the download), but it is very noticeable. This happened on all the updates. Took a good 45 minutes to apparently over an hour to complete! There seems to be a long pause about 10% to 20% into the progress bar. Then another long pause when almost complete at like 90%. It just sits there and says updating. Near the end I did hear some disk activity for a bit, then nothing.  My fastest computer is taking the longest but has numerous backup jobs if that makes a difference.  That delay makes no sense and not sure what it is doing and if it did it on 2 of my very difference machines (one lenovo yoga, one Asus ROG PC) something must be going on with the update.

And my PC is still sitting there with the bar almost done...saying updating.  It is an hour.  My yoga did that and eventually said complete.  Hopefully my PC will also but I have to leave for a bit.

This is why I don't like doing updates!  :)

BJB

PS. To clarify the Yoga laptop completed after like 45 minutes successfully.

My PC still says "updating", apparently hung.  Let me know the best next steps as I will likely have to try that tonight.  Looks like my backups today won't run....Grrr....

Update:  It is obviously frozen.....still says updating.  Appreciate any advice on how to attempt the update again. Fortunately I did export my backups/settings per the advice here before attempting this.

Of course I will have to "end the process" tonight when I attempt this...

But then what?   Use the standalone installer to re-try?  I also always have my antivirus paused during during installs so it isn't that.

Hopefully I can resolve this on my own with the help here......the last time I had to escalate an issue through support regarding my dashboard, it took weeks....

Thanks,
BJB

I would try doing a normal Windows restart then see whether ACPHO looks to be good or not?  If not good, then try the manual install.  My own upgrades have been fine so far using both methods.

Thanks @SteveSmith.  I will indeed try the restart. I appreciate your advice as always!

I was trying to remember if the laptop really went to "sleep" and upon wakeup said completed or if the screen just turned off and upon screen waking up it said it was complete.

FWIW my laptop is Windows 11 and the PC is Windows 10.  Curious since yours worked fine if you also had the delay like I did?  Different OS, the Laptop only backs up to cloud, the PC to Cloud and NAS, yet same slow install.  Odd. Only common denominator is both have NVIDIA video cards.

Thanks,

BJB

I don't remember any significant delay when doing the upgrade for ACPHO on the couple of machines I've done which were a Win 10 and Win 11 respectively.

I am wondering if there is any difference between downloading via the ACHO app and downloading the latest build from Acronis www site. I also get the feeling that the update takes longer if you are doing a custom installation.

Ian

@Steve Smith,

A restart brought my ACPHO taskbar icon back. When I started it from the icon it came up with a license acceptance window....so I thought the update worked.  But I also got the box with "As part of your subscription, you are eligible to upgrade to Acronis Cyber protect Home Office".  And sure enough when it came up, it said I was on Build 39900. Sigh....so I don't know what that "updating" bar was doing? Seems like I should have a botched install or the new version?   So strange.  Especially since that license box came up.

Maybe tomorrow night I will try again.   I have done custom installs on both machines and both had the delay.  It is just that this PC one never did complete.

FWIW it does appear to be functional, all my backup jobs are there and everything.  It did miss 2 backup jobs today. I've never had that happen but assume it will try to catch up.

I guess I could try without choosing "custom" and just let it do it's default thing if it does not work when I retry it.

Thanks,

BJB

Thanks for all the help above.  I used the link to the download, saved it and ran it. I chose custom install and installed the core and the malware but not the antivirus or try options.

Also, besides disabling my ESET antivirus before installing (which I did last time and always do), I noticed Malwarebytes real-time protection was running and disabled that.

This install/upgrade process was significantly different!  It progressed rapidly and finished in around a minute, which is what I would expect. It says I am on the latest build now.

Not sure if it was using the download link or disabling Malwarebytes real-time scanning, but it worked!

After install under "Protection" I did notice that it has a "pause protection" button and it says "your pc is not fully protected". I did not install the anti-virus option but I do want the boot sector or whatever that other protection is.... Under "active protection" malicious files and malicious websites apper to not be grayed out and the other options are greyed out.  It also says my last scan was April 2022 and my next is 10/21/22!  So if I did not install antivirus what is it using?   If I hit pause protection does that leave the boot virus or whatever active and just disable everything else?  Since the last scan was april clearly this was off and now on?  It's always something :)

Now I need to keep an eye out for that October/November special pricing deal and see if I can extend my cloud subscription without having to cancel (and reload backups)!

Thanks again,
BJB

Just in case someone else has this question.  I determined that even though I installed my "upgrade/Update" with antivirus de-selected, that option was still ON and available under settings in the protection menu in my new version. Perhaps because it was previously installed before this option was made available.  Seems to me if you don't install this it shouldn't make it available and the background processes should not be there.

I do not want to uninstall re-install but FYI. Of course I was able to turn it off so that really is no change from before the custom install option.

As to the Ransomware protection, it turns out this has been turned off on my install.  I cannot find any detailed material as to WHAT this protection is doing when it says it protects backup files, your NAS etc.  I see the FAQ that gives basics on the settings.  Does this create issues with Windows 10 if I turn it on?  The fact that it can copy files from my NAS back to my PC is a little scary.  I also seem to recall some issues where to make this work I might have to turn off a windows service or something?  Is this worth it and safe or a hassle?

I have an antivirus program that already protects against viruses and malware.  I know that you should not have two antivirus programs running but wasnt sure about the malware. And again, if Acronis does something unique protecting my NAS connection (I backup to the cloud and NAS) maybe I want it on....

Sorry for the book!

Thanks,
BJB

Dear customer,
We would highly recommend paying attention to our current Halloween promo offer: Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (Formerly True Image) - Integrated Backup and Anti Malware Protection

Daria,

Thanks! If I purchase a year, will it get ADDED to my current subscription which does not expire until early next year?

Thanks,
BJB

Daria,

Thanks again. I see you responded to my other question.  I would like to purchase this today if it will be added to my current expiration date.

Thanks!
BJB

Daer BJB,
Thank you for additional questions. If you consume the same license as you already have, it will be extended for a year but if you buy a different license (different number of devices or different Cloud storage volume) you have to choose how to apply the subscription. You can learn more about the options in the article: https://kb.acronis.com/content/59700

Daria,

Thanks I did this.  I did notice that the license key is different.  Do I need to input this anywhere?

If I install on another PC if I recall I just need my login so don't need the license key?

I did notice my expiration date changed on my account page within the product.

Thanks for your help,

BJB

All you need to do is to add the license to your account (log in and click on the Add Keys top right of the page. Depending on how Acronis systems work it may already have been added.

Correct, all you need to do is to log into your Acronis Account.

Dear BJB,
I can only agree with Ian, he put everything perfectly.

Thanks all. Definitely see how to add keys right there.

Question. Is there a place I can see what keys are already in my account?  I really looked and looked and didn't see it.  I had so many issues getting my dashboard to work, and that was an account issue I couldn't fix, I don't want it to show 2 products. But since my installed program already shows the extended year maybe it doesn't matter.

Thanks again, this forum is great.
