Back up stops with "the file is read only"

Thread needs solution

Hello,

My backups have begun stopping with the message "the file is read only, to specify another location click browse".

I'm backing up to a 6Tb drive with about 3Tb free.

I've tried choosing a new directory but after a few minutes the warning pops up again.

I could really use some help.

Thanks

Paul, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry but more information is needed to try to understand what is happening here?

What actual version / build of ATI are you using?  Is this ATI 2016 per this forum or other?

What version of Windows OS is involved? 10, 8, 7 etc

What type of backup are you creating?  Disks & Partitions (or Entire PC) or Files & Folders?

The log for the backup will be our best source of information about the error.

There is a new MVP Assistant log viewer tool that has now been made available by Acronis via the Community Tools page..

If you have Disks & Partitions backups created on ATI 2020 or later using .tibx files, then look in the Backup Worker logs.

If you have Files & Folders backups using .tib files (or Disk backup using same) then look in the Demon logs.

Other logs are shown by the MVP Assistant under the 'Active Logs' heading of the Log Viewer page of the Assistant.

The log files should be zipped to preserve their original file names if sharing in the forums and would need to be less than 3MB in size, otherwise you would need to share the zip file via a Cloud share service such as OneDrive, Dropbox etc.

I ran in to this same problem today: "the file is read only, to specify another location click browse".  I did a lot of googling for an answer.  Found nothing helpful.

Looking at the dump that came in the last email that is generated following a backup it seemed to indicate the write error occurred trying to create the new incremental Acronis backup file (.tib extension) on my backup drive.

Later, while poking around my backup drive, which is a Western Digital drive, I saw an install exe for a suite of WD tools and installed it.  Immediately, I noticed the WD tool was flagging the backup drive as "read only".  I then found an article on how to change a "read only" drive to "read write".  (I wanted to post the link to that article but was blocked by this forum from doing so.)

I am now rerunning the last scheduled backup job that failed due to the write error.  I am confident that it will work now.

I have no clue how the backup drive became "read only".

I hope this is helpful.
