Cloning bootable disk (Win11)

Hello:  I am having some trouble cloning a bootable disk for a WIN11 desktop computer.  I am trying to migrate from a Samsung 850 SSD to a Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD.

I followed the instructions for cloning and things seemed to work fine.  I then removed the source drive and rebooted.  The system never booted completely, seemed to hang just after the Dell logo.

I reattached the original source drive and was able to get the sytem to boot properly.

See attached screen shot, this shows the drive configuration.  I notice on my source drive there are partitions identified by L: and C:.  Since the new drive doesn't have drive letter designations is this effecting the success.

Based on the information provided, it's possible that the cloning process was not completed successfully or that the new drive was not properly configured to be bootable.

In regards to the drive letter designations, it shouldn't affect the success of the cloning process as long as the partitions were properly cloned to the new drive.

To troubleshoot the issue, I would recommend the following steps:

  1. Verify that the cloning process was completed successfully by reviewing the log files generated during the cloning process.

  2. Ensure that the new SSD is properly configured to be bootable. You can do this by checking the BIOS settings and verifying that the new SSD is selected as the primary boot device.

Try physically moving the cloned target drive to replace the original source drive then try booting into Windows with the original source drive removed (to avoid any disk signature clash by having two drives with the same signature present).

Ok, I have (at least partially) solved this issue.  Rather than go the clone route, I did a full backup, removed the old drive.  Upon boot, the system booted Acronis recovery and I restored my latest backup to the new drive successfully.  System boots fine, all seems good!

Except:

The extra space on the new drive is unallocated and NOT adjacent to C:.  I obviously would like to get that extra space as part of Drive C:.  My quick research says that merging can't be done if the unallocated space isn't adjacent to Drive C:

Is there a way around this?

You need to use a disk management utility, such as MiniTool Partition Wizard Free to move the recovery partition (and any other hidden system partitions) to the end of the drive, and then you can expand the partition to take advantage of the additional space on the new drive.
