True Image 2021 Slows My Computer To A Crawl (useless)

Thread needs solution

Got me thinking. I should be asking for a refund for the update to 2021 since I have been using 2020 for over a year now.

Well, I take back my comment on the latest build. Now I can no longer back up to the cloud. The latest error "failed to lock the file."

I give up, requested a refund on my subscription.  I plan on moving to another provider

With Acronis 2021 with Active protection enabled, the laptop CPU usage and temperature increased to the point where it would shutdown due to a "thermal event" ... all CPU cores were easily above 100F ... disabling active protection seems to have remediated the thermal issue ...

Lesson learned? "Feature Creep Kills"

This has been going on for many months. Acronis has released several later versions of True Image 2021, but the core issue remains.

I too am now joining the growing chorus of those wanting a refund for a product I simply can't use. This program is a total POS. Meanwhile, True Image 2020 continues to work.

I hesitated updating my Acronis True Image 2021 based on all the negative reports about performance problems that have appeared.  But I took the plunge a few weeks ago and installed and used ATI 2021.  There were no performance issues at first, but in the past week, I've seen Acronis Cyber Protect Service (rarely) consuming up to 100 percent of my CPU, with no visible benefit.  Usually it consumes only up to about 10 percent, but that -- plus other task switching between the various agents and background processes, up to 20 of them from Acronis -- have slowed my Windows 10 Pro system down enough to make it unusable.

I disabled ALL Acronis services and, not surprisingly, my system is back to its snappy self.  I have uninstalled ATI 2021 and will fall back to ATI 2020 until the reports in this forum indicate that this issue has been resolved.  As a software professional, I am very curious how Acronis decided to implement the latest protection services in order to achieve such dismal performance.  I have trusted Acronis implicitly for many years, and I acknowledge that it takes time (a LOT of it) for new infrastructure features to mature.  But I'm happy to stick with NortonLifeLock for security and use Acronis for iron-clad backup if they can't get their act together.  At least avoid inflicting painful experiences on customers until you have confirmed that the purported tools actually work and don't make the situation worse.

Robert Sioberg:

A very interesting post, especially as your problems started arising after a few weeks.

After contact with Acronis support, I have reinstalled True Image version 39216 a couple of days ago on two laptops. I was recommended to "turn off real-time protection temporarily as you already have other Antivirus and monitor the application behavior and share the outcome with us...". My Antivirus is Comodo on Win 10, 64 bit.

So far it seems OK. I backed up both laptops and that went OK, although I had also done my 1st of the month v2020 backups beforehand. As I am a home user and retired, a monthly manually instigated full backup is sufficient for my needs so True Image is really overkill; incremental backups bring back bad memories.  I started using True Image in about 2009, when the Windows alternative was no real alternative and have been a loyal customer since then.

6 months, at least, since 2021 was released and I am dismayed to see that there are still major problems. I think that I can say that we are all after backup dependability; that is why we use this particular software application. The trouble is that the 'dependability' bit is now in question.

For me, personally, it is time to rethink my options.

Edit:

Something I forgot to mention above. When I installed 2021, having used Revo Uninstaller to remove 2020, I checked that real time Active Protection was disabled; which it appeared to be. On restarting 2021, post installation, I checked again and on both laptops, it had been enabled. Disabling again stopped it on further uses of 2021.

I am having the exact same issue.  I have an i9 with 64 gb of memory so i dont get this.  Mouse stops moving, typing text seconds behind, etc.  Please provide a fix.  dont want to go backward but will completely uninstall if need be just to confirm.  I originally bought for the backup i dont even use the protect features.

SLOW

This is the slowest software I have ever used (including network backups). Local PC backup of less than 1 TB to external Seagate. (the drive is fine, plenty of unused space, uncorrupted, thank you). Takes more than 2 hours to backup.

i have been using Acronis for backups for about 2 years. Its terrible, the interface sucks and performance is...(use your own adjective here).

The only reason I stayed was because I had paid for a perpetual license and a network license and I am frugal.

Had to restore a few files yesterday. Took forever. This was the last straw. Actively looking for another backup solution.

-DL

I have two licenses of Acronis True Image 2021, on one PC it runs normally.

On second PC Acronis causes that for about 8 minutes  after Windows 10 Professional startup is PC "inactive",

means unusable, it slowes down Windows Startup. If I disable Acronis Active Protection (TM) Service,

then after PC restart is everything OK, until I start Acronis software again, which starts the service again and again delays. occure.

So I have to wait minutes, then setup backups, then disable Acronis Active Protection (TM) Service, restart PC

and Acronis performes backups correctly. Only If you need to start Acronis via icon, you have to play with service again.

True image takes over 7 minutes to start on my win 11 computer. I have a 980 pro drive, I9 with 64 gb of memory.

I have a PC with 980 pro drive, 32Gig of ram and a Ryzen 9 5850x CPU and it takes nowhere near that long to load. Not saying that it is fast; just not as slow as you are seeing. My recollection is that the recent beta loaded much faster than the current build of ACPHO. A new build of ACPHO, based on the beta build, should be released in the near future (cannot say how long it will take to fix things that the product team has decided must be fixed before the new build is released).

App opening speed should improve substantially when the complete code rebuild is finished; that is going by my experience with Cyber Protect 15.

That sounds promising as the performance impact by some Acronis services is pretty extreme in my case using the newest Samsung 990 Pro NVMe SSD. Benchmarks attached, -70% IOPS on 4K Q32T16 for no apparent reason...

March 2023, brand new Dell XPS 15 and I can't use the computer if Cyber Protection is running.

Is there a way to schedule whatever it is doing to a time other than 8am?

Scott, welcome to these public User Forums.

Are you running ATI 2021 as per the subject line for this topic?  If so, then your options are to use the Protection > Settings > Antivirus scan schedule settings to ensure this doesn't conflict with the times you are using the computer or else turn off Protection and use a different antivirus solution.

If you have ACPHO, then there is now the option of doing a Custom Install and not having Cyber Protection installed at all if it is not to your liking.

Hello Scott.

Those issues related to our advanced features should be investigated because that's they shouldn't interfere with the performance.

I would advise you disabling the feature and confirm yourself if the PC works just fine after doing that ( https://kb.acronis.com/content/60190 ). If it does then please raise a ticket with our support with evidential proofs showing the device actually hangs when the features are active: https://kb.acronis.com/content/8153

Thanks!

Since December 2022 I was looking with WD support for a reason why my new WD_BLACK SN850X was performing even worse than the kit Kioxia on my DELL INSPIRON 16+. The disk was slow (according to many benchmarks) and my laptop started to hang up for dozens of seconds several times a day on different occasions, most often when opening Windows Explorer or Google Chrome. This is a tool that I use to do my job so it was really annoying.

From the DELL forum I learned how to switch off the default BIOS option "RAID ON" without reinstalling Windows, the benchmarks got better, but still, the laptop had been freezing annoyingly often. WD offered me even the exchange of the disk.

Luckily, after 6 months of trouble, by accident, I found an option in the Acronis True Image for Western Digital that came with the disk: Active Protection. I switched it to OFF, having a sudden hunch that it was problematic, et voila, the problems disappeared, Now, for two weeks the laptop has not frozen even once, and the benchmarks show finally proper disk performance.

Hello Jani.

The Acronis True image for WD is a OEM product.

Please raise a ticket support with them so they can help you troubleshooting the issue: https://kb.acronis.com/content/2201

Thanks!

Hello,

Acronis True Image 2021 is become totally unusable. It takes about 20 minutes just to load. Sometimes it fails and you have to try several times.

This is totally unacceptable. Anyone has faced this type of loading issues.

Hello, Renny.

Please note that Acronis True Image 2021 isn't supported, so no updates are being made for it. You can find more information here: https://www.acronis.com/en-eu/support/lifecycle/consumer/#true-image.

Please try to fix the program by running the installation file. Also, if you are using a third-party antivirus software, make sure it isn't blocking the program: https://kb.acronis.com/content/36429.

Please note that the issue you described is not related to this thread.

Thanks in advance!
