Error Message 0x00040001 0x0000FFF0 0x80070017 when validating backup.

Thread needs solution

This message occurred on Disk backup validation. I run a dailydisk backup of my computer C drive to an external 4tb Western Digital HDD. The backup limits versions to 30. I run a validation with each backup. The backup has worked perfectly for several months. Recently the validation hung up with about 37 minutes more to run and I got the above error message. I tried again. Same thing.

I started a new backup to the same HDD and that has been running fine so far (~4 versions so far).

I found several exchanges about this problem on the forum (2011 and 2013) but there seems to be no resolution.

My suspicion is that it is the result of bad sectors on the HDD. However this HDD is less than a year old.

Has anyone had this problem and resolved what the cause is?

Please advise the version and build of ATI you are using. Also, the version and build of the operating system (for example Windows 11 Pro Version 22H2, OS build 22621.1992.

Please confirm the validation is being done using the ATI application rather than recovery media.

Hi there,

Any help would be much appreciated.

System windows 11

Hello!

This error typically indicates a problem during the backup validation process. The error codes can provide some insight into the issue, and I'll explain each of them briefly:

  1. 0x00040001: This code indicates a general error during the validation process. It could be related to various issues that need further investigation.

  2. 0x0000FFF0: This code points to a file system error. It suggests that there might be an issue with the file system on either the source or destination drive where the backup is stored.

  3. 0x80070017: This is a Windows error code that usually means "CRC_ERROR." It indicates a data error that could be caused by problems during the data transfer or a hardware issue. (corrupt backups)

To address this issue, I recommend the following steps:

  1. Verify Storage Media: Ensure that the storage media where the backup is located (e.g., external drive, NAS, or cloud storage) is in good condition and accessible. If it's an external drive or a NAS, check its physical connections and try using a different USB port or network cable if applicable.

  2. Check Disk Integrity: Use built-in Windows utilities like "chkdsk" to scan and repair any potential file system errors on the source and destination drives involved in the backup process.

  3. Run SFC Scan: Perform an SFC (System File Checker) scan to check for and repair any corrupted system files that might be affecting the backup process.

  4. Check Backup Software Version: Ensure that you are using the latest version of the backup software to take advantage of any bug fixes or improvements that might address this issue.

  5. Review Backup Settings: Double-check the backup settings and configuration to ensure that there are no conflicts or misconfigurations causing the error.

  6. Temporary Disable Antivirus/Firewall: Sometimes, security software can interfere with the backup process. Temporarily disable your antivirus and firewall during the validation process and see if it resolves the issue.

  7. Test with a Smaller Backup Set: If possible, create a smaller test backup set and attempt the validation. This can help determine if the issue is related to the backup size or data.

Thanks in advance!

Thank you Jose Pedro, I will try your recommandations and will publish the results soon. I already tried a small backup (just one file and it worked perfectly well, I was able to open the TIB file from windows explorer. Anyway I will let you know.

Thanks again

Hello again,

I tried to chkdsk with admin command prompt. I can't see the drive: MyBookLive (on network (directly connected to pC with network cable patch), it says there are no entries in the list

I am assuming it is healthy sin I did try a small backup and it was succesfull , I was able to open the TIB file in windows explorer.

Thank you
