RAID 0 Pair Not Discovered by WIn7 or DiskDirector

Thread needs solution

I have a pair of Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB disks in RAID0 that have been used for a few years as a single data only drive (D:) - on a Nvidia/BFG. The C: (Vista) was another RAID 0 pair, one of which went out. I replaced the C: with a SSD for Win7 and a RAID 0 for programs and temp files...installed Win7 and all programs. I reconnected the old D: (as E:) and discovered all files are there, then disconnected until I received replacement drives. I ordered three 2 TB Caviar Black drives - wanting to connect the old data pair as E: and a single new 2 TB as F: in order to copy all files to it, then remove old data pair and connect the other two new 2 TBs in RAID 0 and copy the files to it from the single (not enough SATA ports to copy from RAID 0 to RAID 0).

When I booted Win7 said "found new hardware" and installed drivers for what I think was the 2 TB drives AND the old data pair - then they needed to be initialized...I think - should have made notes, but I thought all was normal. If I had stopped and rebooted things may have been OK. I could now only see the C: drive - Programs (D:) and Data (E:) gone. I disconnected E: and tried to get D: back - no luck. I stopped... Anyway, I researched the next few days and decided on DD and TrueImage. Installed DD and 10 minutes later had the D: drive back - good as new. So glad I don't have to reinstall everything...

Now I see the old data pair in the BIOS RAID configuration screen and have deleted and recreated several times. I still can't see it with Win7 (FDISK) or DD. Any suggestions? Bad drivers?

Once I have the old data drive (old D: - which I backed up every month or so to another RAID0 pair) transfered to the new data pair I'll see what I can do with the failed drive (WD1500AHFD) - as that C: Vista pair had about a month's worth of "My Docs", some temp photos, and a month's worth of Outlook e-mail on them.

Oh - made an image of the D: drive to the single 2 TB as soon as it was back up running.

Two great products!

If I delete the RAID 0 pair from the hardware controller and turn off RAID0 control of the two SATA ports, I can then see the drives with DD - but they are seen as individual drives. I ran a quick search and found nothing, swapped ports and running again. If nothing found again, I'll run the complete search. I wish there were more information on recovering RAID drives in the manual. Does DD, in running the search on two drives, assume they may be RAID? Or does DD REQUIRE the drives be correctly configured by the hardware controller or Windows as appropriate?

No matter how many times I use Win7 to create and delete a partition on each of these two drives, and then create a RAID 0 drive using hardware, it never show up in Fdisk or DD as a RAID 0 drive.

I hope there is some simple answer, but it isn't looking good right now. I'm going to disconnect them until an "expert" responds here.

It would be really nice if someone would chip in some advice...

I've created a bootable CD with DD on it. It found the RAID 0 pair, searched, and repaired the partition - yet Windows still can't see it.

Looks like I'll next need to create another CD with TrueImage on it and see if I can copy the image to my new 2 TB drive.

Ran TrueImage - selected to save files and directories. Ran for a few minutes and then rebooted (I didn't select the reboot option). Rebooted to Windows, MyBackup1 exists, but is corrupt (size of 0 shown, properties states 306MB - about 1/3 the size it should be).

I'll try again, this time capturing the image. Still have 1.7 TB free on the new drive.

I now have three MyBackup files on my new 2 TB drive. None of them can be read by TrueImage:

0x006403ED
0x00040011
0x0000FFF0
0x80070002

What gives?

I discovered I can read the complete image file when booting from CD, so have recovered some files to the 2 TB drive.

Next I disconnected the old SATA 0 data pair and connected the new SATA 0 data pair (2 TB each) to the same SATA ports. Strange, but I can't see them from Windows, so initialized and partitioned using the CD.

Now I question the Sata ports...

Oh - I did upgrade to the True Image Home 2011 Plus Pack...to discover you can't copy to the same disk! Ouch!

Some suggestions:
It would be nice to be able to schedule chkdsk from the CD software.
It would be VERY nice to be able to copy/move files using the CD software.

Installed new (as of today) Windows updates, reinstalled Nvidia 15.53 drivers. Suddenly Windows can find the new 4 TB RAID 0 drive. Will try the old data drive soon.

Acronis Tech support sent me an e-mail requesting my logs. I responded I would like them to come here and answer my comments first. We can always do the log thing when we are down to one last issue.

If TI and/or DD from the CD can see the RAID drive okay and Windows doesn't, it usually means there is a problem with the Windows RAID drivers. Did you have any success with the old drives since your last post?

If not, do the RAID drives show up in Device Manager or Disk Management?

Hello Mark and MudCrab,

Thank you for posting and your kind assistance MudCrab,

Mark, I apologize for the inconvenience but this issue will require additional investigation. It would really help us if a remote session could be established in order to understand why this problem occurs. Our forum is more of a community than a support channel that is why I would recommend to contact our Support team via chat so that we can help you fixing this issue.

If you have any other questions or need additional help please let me know.

Thank you.

I just finished the copy of all the data files from the old RAID 0 (I was having trouble with) to the new RAID 0 pair. The Win 7 update / driver reinstall appears to have fixed the problems. Both Win7 and DD can now see all drives. 1.83 TB (uncompressed) on the 3.63 TB RAID 0 pair. The old pair were 500 GB each and the RAID 0 drive was compressed. Nice to have breathing room again. The old pair will go on the shelf - along with the old RAID 0 backup pair (that I have not connected to the system since the trouble started).

So now I have:
C: 120 GB Intel Solid State (Win 7)
D: 1 TB 10,000 RPM (Programs and Temp)
E: 4 TB RAID 0 (Data) 1/2 full

Soon to have 7 TB RAID 5 backup (F:)
