True Image cannot detect hard drive for image Backup/Restore.

Thread needs solution

I am having difficulty in resolving an issue that seems to have to do with the MBR. It started when I used Disk Director Suite 10 to delete a redundant invisible partition, known as PQSERVICE, from the boot drive of an Acer computer. This partition was the first on the volume, and I resized the active partition C:/ to fill the now unused space.

While Win7 loads up just fine, I can no longer access drive C:/ with True Image Version Home 11.0 (8053) or Disk Director Suite 10.0 (2160) running in windows. I also cannot access the drive using these applications on the bootable Acronis Rescue CD.

I have tried the solution in Bulletin “1515: Acronis Product Does Not Detect Hard Disks in Windows - disks are detected in file/folder backup mode only”. This doesn’t work. When I use DISKPART> clean, I get the following error:

Virtual Disk Service Error:
Clean is not allowed on the disk containing the current boot,
system, pagefili, crashdump or hibernation volume.

I’m stumped. I have a new full image backup of this disk, but I can’t use it to restore the drive. I thought it would be an easy out if I ran into a problem, but it’s not. Has anyone had success in resolving this type of issue, or one similar? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appteciated.

If this is Vista or Windows 7, boot from the Windows install disk or recovery CD and choose the repair option.

This option may also be available via your F8 key during bootup from the SafeMode menu.

Thank you for your reply. This is Windows 7. I have already gone the suggested route. Windows 7 loads just fine, so there is no feature of the Windows 7 > Install > Recovery that will resolve my problem. The problem seems to rest outside of Windows 7 itself. I would simply reformat the volume with Disk Director, and then restore the volume with my image file. Unfortunately, Disk director can't access the volume. I've tried MBRfix 1.31 along with a few other means of restoring the MBR. Nothing works. There is something here that I don't understand. I hate to admit it, but I'm flummoxed.

If this is a Gateway, normally, in a Windows standard factory install, it is the non-lettered 100mb "system reserved" partition which is the active partition. However, it this is an upgrade for home install, the C partitions might be active.

Thank you for your interest in this. It seems I had a compatibilty issue with my Acronis products and Windows 7. I am now back on track. I have downloaded and installed the latest TI 11.0 (8101) update. This is now detecting the drive, and there is no compatibility issue. I tried to install the latest update to DD 10.0, but received a non-compatible error message and the install was aborted.

I have upgraded to DD 11.0 (2121), and this detects the drive. I should be able to resolve my dilemma, now that I can see what I have to deal with. It seems that I not only still have the two partitions, but also a MBR in each. Sometimes we can get so focused on a problem that the proximate cause eludes us. Thank you again. I appreciate your taking the time to offer assistance.

Bill,
Understand that any build of version 11 is not designed for use with Windows 7. You may be able to use the CD for backups and restores but installing into Windows could be another issue.

Sorry for the delay in my response. I took a few days away from computers. You're quite correct, in that TI 11 is not certified for Windows 7. It did however, continue to perform the basic backup and restore functions without problems. I have since upgrade to TI 2011, and at first I was less than impressed with the changes to the interface. However, after a long hard look I could see that the changes improved the product. Acronis puts out quality products that just keep getting better. Now, if only they would offer a reasonably priced version of TI 2011 for home use with Ubuntu and other Linux distros, life would be complete.

Thanks again for your interest.

Bill,
Thank our for your followup. As 2011 is so totally different, we all have had fun(?) hunting for all the features. Acronis has compiled quite a list of helpful "how to's". Click on the bright green link in my signature below and look for the "how to's" section. Good luck.
