Before I start flaming Cyber Protect, must know why I can't do full images from boot USB

Thread needs solution

I've been a loyal user of TI since its inception and all the way up to TI 2021. So last week I bought "The Latest" AKA Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office and therein started all my problems!

First of all I don't do anything CLOUD, so that option is off the table. I've ALWAYS done Full Image backups booting from the boot USB that the software allows one to me. It (WAS) fast and easy, efficient and with minimal keystrokes.

Well in this "new" version that functionality is gone! Yes, I can still boot from the USB boot disk but when I try to do an Image Backup my C:\ is nowhere to be seen!!  The only drive available/seen is the boot USB drive and nothing else. I tried creating a boot USB with Window ME and with Linux... same problem.

Called Customer Support and they told me that I could do an Image Backup via the "Backup" option and selecting my USB 1TB external drive as the target . I'm in that process right now but it's been running 1:20 hours and still hasn't finished. The "old" way would take about 25 minutes with Validation!

Is there a way to create a boot USB that will recognize my C:\ drive and allow me to to Image Backups like I've been doing all these years???

There a many possible causes of your problem. You say "I tried creating a boot USB with Window ME .."; if your OS is Windows ME it is not supported by ACPHO. The supported operating systems are:

  • Windows 11
  • Windows 10
  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows 8
  • Windows 7 SP1 (all editions)
  • Windows Home Server 2011

I suspect that the reference to Windows ME is a typo and Astur meant to put Windows PE as referring to bootable rescue media.

Question: Did you create USB bootable media from ATI 2021 for this same computer and did that work / see the C: drive correctly when booted from?

Question: What type of drive is C: and what drivers are used for it?

The usual issue seen in the forums with boot media not seeing internal drives is caused by not having correct drivers.  Typically this applies to the Linux based media which has a number of known limitations whereby it does not support drives using RAID, BitLocker or that require special drivers.

For Windows PE / Windows RE (Recovery Environment) media, then we see issues where the internal drive is using Intel VMD RST drivers that the media builder does not pick up and have to be added manually.

Steve,

Thanks so much for your reply and insight. Been following you for years and you're always spot-on with your comments. BTW and yes you're correct, the boot USB was created by Windows PE.

"Your Question: Did you create USB bootable media from ATI 2021 for this same computer and did that work /see the C: drive correctly when booted from?"

No, I created the USB Bootable media using the Acronis Cyber Protect Software Home-Office that I installed. Yes, when I was using ATI 2021, C:\ was available when I booted with the from the Rescue USB and did my Image Backups of this PC onto an external disk drive that currently has about 8 generations of .tibx images. The problem seems to be with Cyber Protect and its build of the Rescue USB!!

"Your Question: What type of drive is C: and what drivers are used for it?"

Drive C:\ is a Western Digital 512GB NVMe M.3 SSD factory installed on an HP Pavilion Desktop PC TP01-3000i that's just a little bit over a year old. The PC is running the latest version of Windows 11 Home Edition as well as the latest HP Firmware.

As for the drivers being used on the disk drive, Device Manager shows it as Microsoft version 10.0.22000.832. The Update Driver option on Device Manager says that this is the latest.

N.B. As for the C:\ drive mentioned its available drivers, I guess that I'm running the latest since according to the Western Digital site says:

Western Digital products use drivers that are provided by the Windows and macOS operating systems. The driver will be automatically installed when the drive is connected and detected by the computer if the drivers are not already installed. Newer WD SES Drivers are not available for manual download from Western Digital and are only available through Windows or macOS updates.

Astur, download a copy of the MVP Assistant - New 2.0 with Rescue Media Builder (New Version 2.7.5.1)  tool and try using the media builder provided there which will help analyse the drivers that are in use for your NVMe M.2 SSD.

It is strange if the ATI 2021 bootable media was able to see your C: drive but the ACPHO media isn't!

Please check that you have ACPHO build #40729 which is the latest build (shown in the GUI Account page).

Hello!

Please reply to the email our support team sent you, providing the requested details.

It's important to reply so that our support team is aware of the situation and can assist you promptly.

Best regards.

Mr. Magalhes,

Pursuant to your above comment, I was able to speak on the phone with a member of your Support Team (Mr. Jeevan Prathap) who basically told me that my only options for Full Image Backups are via invoking your software from within Windows 11 while it runs in background.

I tried this option and it does work but it takes almost 4 times the amount of time as my TI-2020 did. When I was using TI-2020 and booting from the Rescue Disk, Image + Validation took around 35 minutes. Now with your "new and improved" software doing an On-Line Image with validation took almost 2 hours!!

The option and comments that Steve Smith gave me for the MVP assistant is a little too technical for me. But then again if what Steve says is correct "For Windows PE / Windows RE (Recovery Environment) media, then we see issues where the internal drive is using Intel VMD RST drivers that the media builder does not pick up and have to be added manually."... Then why don't you just do all your customers (in my case, 16 years) the favor of incorporating his solution right into your software.

If it's that the software footprint is too large (WHICH IT IS), then how about removing some of the "bloatware" that comes with the package or at least allow your customers to select what components the want installed via a menu? Then maybe this will allow Steve's solution to be incorporated  directly into the product.

Bottom line... I only do (did) Full Image Backups invoked from a Boot Disk. Hence, I'm very dissatisfied and disappointed with your Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office Software. For now I'll continue to do my weekly Images of my C: drive but will also begin to look for other similar products for replacement.

Thank you for your time.
