True Image 2021 - Failed to run a child process
Acronis True Image 2021, Build 39287 Windows 11 Enterprise, Version 22H2, OS build 22621.1992 (all latest updates installed) I cannot backup anymore in my windows installation. As soon as I start a backup it tries to start but then fails with message 'Failed to run a child process.'. I removed whole installation, ran cleanup utility to remove all parts of Acronis and re-installed latest 2021 version, re-created backup-job, but still same issue. I can backup when using USB boot drive. I searched everywhere what could be wrong with my Windows installation but did not find anything yet. The ti_demon_xxx.log is very specific, but without source-code I cannot tell the reason:

The Pre/Post command are not enabled and empty
This is thus regretfully not the cause of the issue.

Henri, if you are still seeing this issue some 4 months later then I would suggest creating a new backup task to see if that will work successfully, otherwise do a repair install.
See KB 60915: Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office, Acronis True Image: repairing program settings - for more information.

Thank you for your quick reaction Steve. I already tried recreating backup but that doesn't help.
I have also completely de-installed the software and used the available Acronis software to remove all data from Acronis from the system (registry. etc.) and then re-installed and that doesn't help either.
I can backup when I start from USB pendrive.

Henri, is Acronis installed from and running from an Administrator user account as is required for correct operation?
From the ATI 2021 User Guide - Introduction - System requirements section:
Other requirements
- An internet connection is required for the product activation, for downloading protection updates, and for all features that use Acronis Cloud, including online backup, cloud archiving, and data synchronization. If your computer is not connected to the internet, you can activate the product by using another computer that has an internet connection. Refer to Activating Acronis True Image 2021 for details.
- You need to have administrator privileges to run Acronis True Image 2021.

Hello!
Please check this KB: https://kb.acronis.com/content/1855
I would suggest entering your account and downloading other builds of the program to test them.
Best regards.

I am administrator on my system, but to be sure I have right-clicked the Acronis executable and used 'Run as Administrator'. Still same problem.
I have also checked the 3 steps in the KB for digital signature and it says the digital signature is OK and signed by 'Acronis International GmbH' on 05-Jan-2022 16:06:04.
(executable name is 'AcronisTrueImage2021.exe) and file size is 823.076.768 bytes).

Did you tried to test with older builds as suggested above?

I have tried now:
Acronis True Image 2021 Build 39184
Acronis True Image 2021 Build 39216
Acronis True Image 2021 Build 39287
All the same problem. I have feeling it is related to backup-destination which is a Samba share on XigmaNAS NAS.
However when I boot from pendrive with Acronis to backup my system it works to this destination!

Henri, I know absolutely nothing about the Samba share on XigmaNAS NAS, but my guess is that you may be correct that that is the issue. Have you been able to successfully backup to other destinations?
It sounds like the issue is not with Acronis, but rather with a NAS interface that Acronis cannot deal with.

When I boot from pendrive with Acronis to backup my system it works to NAS destination!
I tried to export to external USB disk and the same issue. Thus issue seems still related to Acronis.
What did your developers say about the stack trace (indicates lines 780 of source-file: backup_operation.cpp)?

The main issue could be with the operating system itself. Acronis True Image 2021 was not tested to be used with Windows 11. Here is the list of compatible operating systems: https://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/ATI2021/index.html#…
Only our latest product supports Windows 11: https://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/ATI2024/#40808.html

Hello!
Do you use any local antivirus on that machine?
If yes, could you please try adding the Acronis executable as an exception? Acronis Knowledge Base: Adding Exceptions
Best regards.

I am using AVG Internet Security and tried two things:
1. Completely disabled AVG Internet Security
2. Added to allowed Apps: 'TrueImageLauncher.exe' and 'TrueImage.exe'.
With both still the same problem.

Henri, some thoughts...
When you install the Aconis application do you 1) disable the anti-virus during the install, and 2) run the installation program as administrator?
A complex, but useful tool is the Windows Process Monitor. It takes some skill to be able to use it to possibly see what the process is that's failing. It would be so much better if the log could tell you.
The log viewer in the MVP Assistant has the ability to cull out logs based on time. I might be useful to see if any other logs (other than Demon) are created at the time the error occurs which could provide more info.
Could it be a problem with a file within Windows? I sometimes run the following commands to check Windows. I don't necessarily run them all. I just move on if an error gets detected.
SFC /verifyonly
SFC /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

I tried next:
- un-install Acronis True Image 2021
- disable AVG Internet Security
- install Acronis True Image 2021 as Administrator
- run Acronis True Image 2021
Still the same problem. I have collected the log files from the c:\ProgramData\Acronis Directory (zip file size of 472.584 bytes, but apparently it cannot be uploaded to this post, please contact me if needed).
Further I have also tried (already before) the above commands like 'sfc /scannow', but no problems found in the Windows installation.
