I want one full, one diffreential, then delete previous differential

Thread needs solution

Hi - This seems like it should be easy but few things in this universe really are.

I'd like to schedule a daily backup in TIH 2011 to do the following:
1) Make one full b/u
2) Make a differential, and then delete any previous differential that exists
3) Repeat step 2 every day

That's it. I am not saying it is good b/u practice or protocol, but that’s what I am trying to do.

I don’t see any way to do this with custom schemes. One reason is that it forces you to create a new full backup eventually.

Hope this makes sense. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The way to do this is through auto-consolidation.
Choose create only differential backups after the initial full backup, and click on the blue link that says auto consolidation settings
I am not a big fan of auto-consolidation: it is a long process, that requires a lot of space.

ATI 2011 had some bugs also: deleting intermediate backups was creating issues with validation or backup corruption. I don't know whether this has been fixed in the latest build, because I don't use the latest build.

Pat - Thanks very much for getting back to me so quickly. You make some good points. I tried consolidation once. After a long time I was informed we had 3 or 4 days to go. Oy vey.

Well, Acronis has some annoying issues but...their restores have always worked for me. I think they know where their bread is buttered. I do have a lot of disk space so I'll work something out.

Thanks again & take care.
