Can't create backup from rescue media on newest pc

Thread solved

I have created rescue media using the simple method for use on my new pc.  I'm trying to create a backup from the rescue media (rather than in Windows 11). I start the rescue program and select Backup.  I'm able to see all the drives and select the correct one.  True Image tells me that some partitions contain errors and can be imaged only sector-by-sector (actually it says this for all three drives installed on the new pc). Windows 11 reports no errors on the drive after scanning. I continue the backup steps but I keep getting a Backup Failed message as soon as I hit proceed. I've always been able to do this on previous pc's, but not on the newest one.  Any solutions would be appreciated.

Hello!

Welcome to the forum.

Run the disk report on the device: Link to Disk Report

If the letter E appears in the report, it means that the drive has errors or bad blocks. Either fix them or replace the drive.

If the report shows no errors, create a WinPE bootable media instead and retry the process: Link to WinPE Bootable Media / Link to Retry Process

Best regards.

Thanks.  I see no errors in the Disk Report.  I initally tried WinPE rescue media, but it does not see the internal drives on the pc, just the USB external plugin drives.  So I went with the Simple (Win RE) media, which sees the drives, but issues the error message and fails when trying to backup the disk.  That's why I was wondering if there were any other solutions?

Could you please generate the disk report, ensuring all disks are connected, and upload it to a third-party file-sharing tool? Kindly share the link with us.

Best regards.

Alright, the email I sent with the link came back undeliverable.  The Forum won't let me post a message with a link.  Nor will it let me upload the file as an upload.  How do I give you the link?

You could try to upload the report here ( Please note there are some ongoing issue in the forum and sometimes that option isn't available ) or past the link to the report without the entire URL together ( as the forum blocks that ).

Sorry, it will not let me upload here.  I've sent you the link by DM and now have granted access for you.

William, is your new PC drive encrypted?  If so it would give the type of issue you have described, i.e. be reported as containing errors from boot media but fine from within Windows.

Not encrypted.  File Explorer shows open locks over all my drives.  This is a new Dell XPS 8960 desktop with two nvMe drives and I've add a SATA SSD drive from my old machine.  None are encrypted.

Have you tried selecting only one disk at a time for the rescue media backup, and if that still gives the same error messages, then can you create a backup from within Windows?

File Explorer shows open locks over all my drives.

To me, that suggests that the drives are all unlocked while at the Windows desktop?  I do not see any indication of any 'locks' for any of my own Win 11 drives in File Explorer.

What does the command: manage-bde -status  report for your drives?  Are any in a 'Pending' status?

Yes I've tried to make a backup using rescue media on each of the three drives separately, but get the error message and then "Backup Failed".  I was able to make a backup using the Windows True Image app.  I just ran the manage-bde -status command and I think that is indicating that the drives are indeed encrypted.  Unfortunately, the forum's "upload file" doesn't seem to work and I can't upload the results here.  I will put it on google drive and send you a link via DM.

Thanks

William, sorry but DM's don't work for me as I cannot access them due to other long term forum issues!

The easiest method is to simply post a link minus the initial https:// part so that it is just more text!  Alternatively you can just paste text into your forum post (as I did for the mange-bde -status output above).

Let me try pasting it here:

If this means there is no way to use rescue media for backing up, does it also mean that restoring a disk from rescue media also wouldn't work?

Okay, I think I've got it fixed.  In Windows 11 settings>Privacy & Security>Windows Security>Device Security>Manage Device Encryption, turn Device Encryption off.  Decryption will take a little while, but when finished, running the command: manage-bde -status will show all drives fully decrypted.  True Image rescue media no longer gives an error warning when setting up backup.  I'll actually run it tomorrow and if it goes okay, I'll mark this as solved.  Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Hello, William.

I have checked the report, and there are no errors.

Acronis True Image cannot back up to a locked volume. So, that was probably the issue.

Best regards.

William, you can backup BitLocker encrypted volumes using Acronis 'Simple' rescue media but you need to unlock the encryption before attempting the backup operation.

There are some steps that are needed in order to access a BitLocker encrypted drive in the rescue environment.

When you boot into the rescue environment, you will see a black Command prompt window along with the main Acronis application window.  You need to close the Acronis window in order to have access to the command prompt in the black window.

Now, you can use the BitLocker commands to identify and unlock your encrypted drive before relaunching the Acronis application again using "X:\Program Files\Acronis\TrueImageHome\trueimage_starter.exe"

See the following data captured from my own system booted from the ATI 2021 Simple rescue media with an encrypted drive connected.

Again thanks to you both for your help  For my purposes, decrypting the drives was the best solution.  As you can see from my bitlocker status report above, the drives were all reported as unlocked, so I'm not sure what further unlocking action could be accomplished.  I'm not sure if the drives defaulted to being encrypted on the first boot to Windows 11 or if I inadvertently choose to encrypt them.  But for me, there's little need for encryption and the complications that go along with it.  I was able to successfully complete a full backup from the simple rescue media after decrypting all the drives.  That's what I want to be able to do, so the problem is solved for me.  I've marked the post as solved.
