Doing differential backups

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I have Acronis® True Image Home® version 11.0 (build 8,101) the full version. I have a new laptop so want to get the new acronis for it. I downloaded the trial version and boy am i confused. I have done a full backup and in the full version i have if you want to create a differential backup you select the fullbackup and acronis would ask if you want an incremental or differential. I cant seem to get differential backups to work. I pick differential in the backup scheme but it does a full backyup. And it doesnt ask which the full backup is. Now i'm thinking that you have to do a full backup and then differeantials in one backup scheme. Which i dont want to do some days i want to do a full backup, but some days i'm short of time so i just want a differental backup. I dont think this is possible in the new version as its seems you have to plan ahead. is this correct or can i do diff backup when i like?

thanks

Andy

As you have found out, the 2011 version is wholly different than past versions.

For help in using 2011, click on the bright green link inside my signature below and check out the many "How to's" for a variety of different tasks.

When creating a differential task, the first task will be a full and the next will be a differential. You can choose what you want the next backup to be but you will have to set it up in advance at time of task creation. If you choose, all the following backups can be differentials but you must set the task up in advance.

You can also set up a different task so all the backups are always of the full type. Again, you need to plan in advance.

The backups can be scheduled or manual.

If you need more help with backup types, explain what you want to achieve.

Thanks for your help groverh. I have used the system for a few days now and i have some follow up questions.

1. Why do you need to 2 full backups before the version chaining does a differenetial backup. seems crazy to me the old version didnt need to do that!

2. the old version would know that last time i backed up i use a network drive and default to the drive this new version have to select every time and doesnt even list the location in the drop down i have to broswe each time is there a way i can make happen?

3. Similar to number 2 if i create a new backup its does seem to remerber i prefer disk backup to partition is there a way i can get it to do that?

thanks andy

1) Only the version chain scheme create 2 full backups, then partials, because it allows you to keep the first backup for posterity. If you don't want that, create a custom scheme.

2) alas no. ATI doesn't do that. I know this is not great.

3) nope. ATI always default to selecting the default system partitions, but this is not enough if you have other partitions on your disk. In disk mode, it selects the entire disk where the system is, which is good.
