Cisco Unified Communications Manager 5.x to 8.x

Thread needs solution

I am currently doing some work to verify whether a Cisco Linux Appliance based server can be 'snapshot' by Acronis for Linux using Bootable Media. This is so that we can go onsite for a customer, collect an image of their servers to a USB drive, restore them in a virtual environment, trial the upgrade process and test hardware compatibilities, and do our best to eliminate risks associated with a full version upgrade.

I had a first attempt at the trial version, and it could see the 'volume' on the Cisco rebadged HP DL320-G4 server, but the backup feature in the trial was disabled.

I now have full build 13544 for testing purposes.

BUT it is now appears to be unable to see the HP SATA Raid controller since I don't see a single volume of EXT3 filesystems anymore, but 2 x disks with mirrored copies of each.

So some questions.

(1) Does the 13544 Linux Bootable ISO build support the HP SATA RAID controller in a DL320-G4?

(2) How does one go about requesting driver additions to the build? And in what sort of timeframe is this possible? We have some seriously inconvenient deadlines.

(3) While we have been testing with our own HP DL320-G4, the 2 x customers in question that we are currently testing this for actually have 'Cisco' badged HP DL380-G5 and HP-DL380-G6 servers. How do I find out if the Linux ISO Bootable media has drivers for the HP Smart Array E200, P400 and P410i?

(4) When we try to do a backup of our system using one of the mirrored disks as the source and an NTFS formatted USB drive as the target (We have tried both Win7 and WinXP NTFS versions) we get an error that the drive is read only. Is there any way to enable writeability to target NTFS drives? We have found that formatting the USB drive for EXT3 works fine, but then it takes additional effort to read and xfer the server images using our Wintel machines.

I have just double confirmed. On the trial Acronis for Linux ISO the build is 12357. I just booted with that again, and in the Linux view, only a single volume is visible, and the partitions come up with the naming format 'RAID1p1 /' '/RAID1p2 /partB' etc.

On the full 13544 build the RAID does not appear and both drives are visible, with a mirrored copy of each partition.

It looks like build 13544 has dropped the RAID driver that is required for DL320 DATA RAID snapshot and restores. The question of whether the later drivers are included still stands.

--tumbleweeds--

Does anyone man the email support inbox? I sent this same question to them yesterday too, with the same absence of conversation....

Luke

I have built a whole Centos machine from scratch, installed the Acronis Linux 12457 build on it, generated a bootable ISO, have booted off it on the DL320 G4, I now have full visibility of the Cisco RAID volume and the backup is now in progress.

So why can't the 13544 build do this?

And I'm still waiting on a response from support......

Hello Luke,

Thank you for your posts and I will definitely help you with your questions.

I apologize for not replying earlier, it's just that our Forum is more of a community than a support channel.

I went through our internal resources and did not find any issues related to hardware support for DL320-G4. If there is a hardware detection problem that needs immediate fix we offer a workaround using the WinPe media.

If you would like to see how our media will support your hardware you can always download a trial version.

Both the issues with writeability and hardware detection in the latest build 13544 need to be investigated. Please rest assured that your case has been forwarded to our Management team and one of our most experienced Support professionals will get in touch with you.

If you need additional help please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi Anton.

On the contrary. I did not expect official assistance here, just community. But still, you have responded here quicker than the official email process! (Incident 01137990). Thankyou.

(a) The trial version of the Linux Bootable media does not support backup (Presales ref:00D3Zcb.5005CR5mx). I've tried. I therefore can't test that it works with Cisco. If it works then I will purchase the product, and in turn recommend it to our customers foir the same purpose. I must add, I have been given access to the full version for testing and have received some excellent presales advice - but am not having any luck accessing support.

(b) I have verified today that the 13544 build has the issue with the DL320 G4, whereas the 12457 does not. Please pass that on to your engineers. I am more than happy to demonstrate reproduction of the problem.

(c) As far as I'm aware, neither WinPE nor BartPE support EXT3 file systems - right? I'm not sure how that could help me.

Regarding the first post, questions (3) and (4) are still open.

Thankyou for your valuable time.
