Cannot restore from backup - cannot run bootable TrueImage

Thread needs solution

I am running XP Pro and (try to) use True Image 10 Home, full version.

So the C partition is shot.
I don't know what did it but Windows started... acting strange.
Having been a Win user for many years, I assume that it's (again) FUBAR and it's time to reinstall.

No problem there. I have the pristine C partition backed up as a True Image backup.

So... how do I restore it?

The bootable media would have been the cool way to go about it.
I downloaded and burned the latest version from the "my account" thingy, where I had registered my products.

Problem:

- Bootable media... boots.
- displays a black screen with an Acronis logo at the top left
- continues loading
- displays a light blue screen with a small DE (with dark blue background) in the bottom right corner.
(I assume the DE is for the german keyboard)

The empty light blue screen is ALL it ever produces.
No actions are taken, no error messages, no nothing.
Isn't it supposed to like... do something? Ask me what I want to do?

Okay, plan B. Maybe the bootable thingy is missing some bit of hardware driver.
So I format C: and install a bare bones Win XP.
I install True Image 10 - also the current version from your site.
It runs, can access all HDD. IT HAS ALL DRIVERS.
I tell it to restore from the backup, which it lets me select just fine.

It now tells me (W000A03EB) that it needs to reboot, which is expected, given that I told it to overwrite the active system partition.

So we reboot.

Same black screen with the Acronis logo, same EMPTY light blue screen with the DE symbol in the lower right.

I'm stumped.
Isn't True Image supposed to SOMEHOW be able to restore from a backup?
That's like... you know... the reason why I bought it.

You definitely have a driver issue. If you have it with the CD, you most likely have the same from the reboot (both are Linux versions).

Donwload the ATI 2011 trial, create the recovery disk with that version and try again. ATI 2011 can restore older versions.

It is very important that you test your recovery CD with a product like ATI.

I installed ATI 2011 Trial.

The one confusing bit was that there was no visible "recover" option.
This made the impression as if the Trial could only backup, not recover.
Might be something to suggest to the interface people...

In some submenu I then found a way to "add" an archive.

Told ATI 2011 to "do it's thing" and... it worked!

Rebooted and the Acronis Launcher started the restore.
Took a while but no comparison to installing all those apps, drivers, helpers, and uhh... stuff.

Hugs and kisses! =P

I think you're right abou the limitation with the tiral version. But you can go to your registered product and download the iso for the recover CD and burn that to Cd and try it--it's usually a different loader and has somewhat diff drivers and might work for you.

If that doesn't owrk, I'd get ATI2011 just for the BootCd it makes. It's the best ATI has ever made and works on all versions going back. I think ATI2011 is worth the price just for the recoveryCD:

Scott, there is no such limitation in the trial version. Windows version if fully functional, and bootable media can't backup, but can restore. It's just well hidden in TI 2011.

Robert,
Check this location on the trial CD and see if it exists.

I knew there was a restriction in one direction or the other. That's a very valuable trial CD, imo.
