Backing up an SSD with TI11

Thread needs solution

Hi all, I have been using Acronis products for many years on my Win XP system with 100% success! My question now is, I am upgrading to a new system with Win 7 Prof as the OS. The OS and programs will be stored on a Corsair 120Gb SSD and I have a 1 Tb HDD for data and storage.

The system is brand new and my Win 7 OS will be the first installation on the new SSD, I have a Maxtor 300Gb external firewire HDD which I have used for backups and intend to carry on with this practice.

My question is, can I use TI home 2011 to take images of my SSD to keep on my external HDD and restore them back to the SSD from this drive without having to worry about the alignment problem? I have trawled this forum and have read many threads regarding the alignment issues and am seeking a definitive answer.

I understand that TI home 2011 is still not fully compatible with SSD's, would I be better off waiting for a newer version which solves the alignment question or will home 2011 work for me?

Yes, you can use ATI 2011 without having to worry about alignment. ATI 2011 is fully compatible with SSDs.

If you install Win7 on a brand new SSD, the installation DVD will automatically align the disk, create a system reserved partition (hidden) and the regular C:\System partition.
When you backup with 2011, choose an all-partition disk and partition backup of your SSD. Since the disk is aligned, your image will be aligned, and your disk will stay aligned upon restore.

If you upgrade from XP to Windows7 on your SSD, there is a high probability that your XP installation was not aligned. The upgrade will not align it. When you image this and restore to the SSD the *whole* disk, it will stay unaligned. To correct this, you can restore one partition at time and align the first partition. So there is a way to realign a disk through a restore operation.

Pat L,

thank you for your reply. I am pleased to note your comments regarding the full compatibility of ATI 2011 with SSD's. I will go ahead and make my purchase on that basis.

Thank you once again.
