Acronis creating 100 MB incremental backup even when no changes are there

Thread needs solution

Acronis True Image 2011 seems to be a Beta version which I've purchased.
This is another problem I'm facing.

When the mode of backup is incremental, after couple of hours if I try to run the backup again it's creating 80 MB or so of backup. I've checked the folders to back up there isn't anything else than the one which I want to backup.

V9 worked perfectly.

When I create an incremental backup first time, why does Acronis add by default C:\User folder by default?

Is there any place where I can write my comments when before initiating next incremental backup ?

Another thing happened yesterday, when I very carefully added a folder in my external hard disk when I went ahead to backup the whole hard-disk(bizzare case).

Anurag,

With 2011, for file backups, there is an issue if you click on the desktop folder. It selects either the entire user folder, or the entire disk if you go through the computer, C:\, ... hierarchy.
This bug was not fixed in the last build.

Can you please answer my first(important), second and third issues?
Thanks for answering my last question.

Anurag,

Which build are you using?
We are talking about a file backup here, right?

If you are using build 6696 or 6857, to your first and second question, you are facing the same bug as your last question. You will notice that desktop is half selected when you create a new backup. This is because ATI selects the volume information folder by default. That creates always some data change. Hence your incremental backup size.

I am not quite sure (from the top of my head). I think you can enter comments when you click restore previous versions, browse to a specific version. There is a small comic book bubble like icon where you can enter comments. Not sure if this is only for the version or for the entire backup chain.

I'm using 6696 and am talking about File backup. I've deselected everything except for the folder I wanted to backup. Still it is creating some 70MB of extra backup.
Is it a bug?

Did you check with hidden files (including system files) visible in windows explorer?

What do you mean? In Windows Explorer or the Acronis File Explorer?

Go to windows explorer, in folder options, make sure you can see hidden files and protected system files.
Then launch ATI and verify what ATI selects for you.

Please see tthat in the attachment(0010.jpg), Desktop seems to be selected. But when I try to deselect it by clicking and unclicking and again selecting "Anurag" folder this Desktop again gets selected. There is no way I can deselect this. What is the solution?

Secondly please tell how tag an incremental backup. I want to write some descriptive comments like "status of this backup, project1 completed, tested...".

Anurag,

There is a bug with the latest build where you cannot select or deselect the desktop by itself. If you want a backup that doesn't include the desktop, you can add that folder in the exclusions.
To get rid of the incremental data, close ATI. Open any folder with windows explorer, click on organize in the toolbar of the folder window, choose folder and search options, choose view, check show hidden files and folders, uncheck hide protected system files.
Then launch ATI, do your file selection, and make sure that the c:\system volume information folder is not selected.
Alternatively, in your backup definition, click on "add" in exclusions, and check exclude hidden and system files.

If you want to select Desktop individually, you will have to go back to build 6597 of ATI, which doesn't have this problem.

No it does NOT work

Hmmm, I am afraid there is no workaround for this bug. If you use only file backup, you can go back to the 6597 version that doesn't have that bug.
Uninstall the current version, reboot, install the older version.

What is a system file for Acronis? If I check it on, what all files will Acronis skip?

I am not sure what system files really encompass.

Most likely files like the volume information root folder, the page file, the hibernation file, the thumbnails and folder defaults.

Maybe all the files in the windows directory, programs directory, appdata, programdata, the files corresponding to the registry...

Due to above mentioned bug, I want to check skip hidden/system files when backing my data folder containing source code/executables and all development stuff.
I just want to make sure Acronis does not skip any of files my backup folder just because it is tagging them as "system files". There are no hidden files in my backup folder. Has this bug been solved?

Hmm... With files like code/executables, I understand you want to be cautious with excluding things. If I were you, I would not exclude anything and live with the issue with file selection.

Alternatively, you could try to go back to build 6597 which didn't have this issue. Or you can evaluate other file backup solutions: Syncback has a fine grain control of backup/mirroring features and is very fast.

How to go back to 6597? Will my v2011 license be valid for this?
Where will I find download link to 6597?

Yes. If you have your 2011 license, go to Acronis.com, create an account, and register your license number. You will have then access to a download area with older builds.
If you install an older build, uninstall the Plus Pack (under letter U) first if you have it, then ATI, reboot, install the older build.
