Can I use Acronis to Clone an IDE XP drive to a SATA drive?

Thread needs solution

I have an old eMachines computer with a 200Gb IDE XP boot drive. I want to replace the boot drive with a SATA drive. The SATA drive is (I think) only 120Gb. I plan on using the "clone" function of Acronis.

Will Acronis let me do this? The data on the IDE disk is only about 70-80Gb in size. Do I need to use some utility to ensure the data on the IDE drive is defragmented and contiguous?

If you can, use a disk and partition backup of your entire disk to a USB disk, and then restore your backup to new drive. Make sure you remove the IDE drive before you boot on the new SATA disk.
The disk and partition backup does not expose your original disk to any risk of hardware/power failure or user error (and we do see some of those).

If you have several partitions on the disk (see your disk management console), you will be able to fine tune how you want the resizing of the paritions to happen at restore time. It is better than letting ATI adjust the size automatically (it will scale the partitions equally, which you do not want if you have some hidden partition).
