Director 11 - Can't get two volumes to merge.

Thread needs solution

I have taken down the computer. I place the disk into the the CD bay and start-up the computer. The Acronis disk is read. I select the volume next to the one I wish to merge with (drive c). the space is unallocated. I create a volume and allow that to process. It appears that the volume has been created.

I select drive C and ask for the computer to Merge volume. I can select both volumes naming the C drive as the "main" volume. The process appears to run. A few mins later I notice that nothing has happened.

What is going on? What am I during wrong?

Thanks!

cdplayer:

What you're doing incorrectly is using the wrong function. You want "Resize"; not "Merge".

Leave the space next to your C: partition as unallocated. If you currently have an empty volume there, delete it and leave unallocated space. Then select the C partition and choose "Resize". Drag the slider to increase the size of the C partition.

If this operation will not complete it is an indication that there is a problem with the file system on the C partition. Disk Director will not resize partitions that have file system errors. You must first fix them using chkdsk. From Windows, schedule a disk check on the C partition from the GUI or from a command prompt. The command to use is chkdsk c: /r

You will need to reboot the PC to allow the command to process. Afterwards, try the resize operation again.

Thank you for replying Mark Wharton!

Using the Resize function will I lose any data stored in drive C?

Thanks!

Glad that worked out for you.

As a matter of explanation, the "Merge" function is supposed to combine the contents of two partitions, each of which contains data, by copying data from one to the other. It finishes by deleting one of the partitions and resizing the other. There are so many opportunities for this process to fail, and unfortunately there have been many horror stories posted on the forum when it does. In general, most of us recommend avoiding "Merge" and doing the process manually. In your case, all you needed to do was to increase the size of your C partition, which is a simple and quick process.
