Error when trying to backup to my (Free)NAS machine.

Thread needs solution

Hi guys,

I was looking for a good backup utility for my work and gaming PC, which is able to make backup's onto my (Free)NAS machine.

The only product which came in mind, was Acronis True Image, used to own it several years back. But didn't use it nowadays anymore.

Anyways... I downloaded the trial version, but I am unable to make a backup to my NAS. I am getting the following error: 0x0004000A. Looking up the errorcode on the KB doesn't show anything / doesn't provide any help at all.

The weird thing, I can browse the FTP within Acronis, but as soon as I want to start backing up, it will result in that error. I have been trying all night yesterday, but no luck at all.
The only thing I can think of, is that it cannot create the new file on the FTP, however, I am logged on as root on FTP, so it should have all the right privledges right?

If I manage to get it working and test it a bit more, I will purchase a license.

Oh and one more question; will I be able to restore my computer with a backup which is located on my NAS through the internet?

Please advice. TY.

There have been several problems with FTP

You should contact Acronis Support and provide them with your ftp log

Thanks for the reply.

Here is my FTP log, should Acronis want to investigate and want to fix it, otherwise they will lose me as a potential customer.

Michel,

This forum is frequented by users like you and me, and infrequently by Acronis support or employees. There is no service level agreement to answer or consider posts for support.
If you are in your support period, you should open a ticket.

Directories are there. 100% sure.
And I am using my root account for testing, so it should have all the access it needs.

I remember the day, when Acronis was part of Wilders Security forums. Much more support there. The switch was one of the reasons for me to stop using Acronis is general.

Anyways I will make one final attempt by opening a support ticket. Hopefully they will answer, or I will look somewhere else. THanks.

And still no answer from Acronis; not on the forums and also not by email. I cannot create a support ticket, cause I have 0 registered Acronis products, even though I tried registering my evaluation version of True Image 2011 several times... Sigh.

Maybe I should take a look at alternatives instead.

Now this is weird... I thought about giving a complete reinstall a try. So I uninstalled True Image and checked the registry for references as well and removed them. Then removed the old directories. Redownloaded the evaluation version and tried again. And guess what? Now it works. Sheesh.

So problem solved. Gonna play some more with it and see if I bump into anything else.

On a sidenote; if I setup back schedules now and I decide to purchase True Image, will those backup schedules still be there?

Just start the trial version and enter the serial into the trial and it becomes a normal licensed version.

Now I am getting a new problem. :S

I am getting: SIZE not allowed in ASCII mode
While there is enough space free (approx 7 TB).

I really don't like to split up the files, I just want 1 big file. Is there a way to solve this?

A target disk which is configured as FAT32 will result in the backup file being split into smaller 4G segments.

If your are saying that the first file was large but subsequent files are smaller, then you need to change your backup type to create only full backups.

Maybe the Lite Guide can be of help. Check the left margin of this page under Useful Links.

If the above does not answer your question, please expand upon a description of your problem.

I am not using FAT32 on the target system, I am using on my (Free)NAS ZFS as a filesystem, which doesn't have a real limit. Yeah maybe petabyte, but not 2GB.

Okay I just tried and to see what is causing the problems.

With Acronis True Image 2011 I am getting an error about the 2 GB limit. This means the problem could be my NAS or the Acronis True Image 2011 software.

So I decided to test it differently; I opened FTP client and tried uploaden a file bigger than 2 GB. And guess what; with the FTP client I am not limited to the 2 GB, cause I just have uploaded a 7 GB file to my NAS.

This concludes the problem consists with Acronis True Image 2011. For some reason it's limiting my upload to 2 GB (1.99 GB to be more precise).

How can I fix this? Is there a way to set Acronis to upload in binary, instead of ASCII. Cause I think that's the problem.

On a sidenote; is Acronis support always lazy in responding to emails? Cause I still haven't received any kind of answer from them. And for some weird reason I cannot create support tickets with my evaluation version of True Image. I am currently also considering alternatives, where support is good, but I still have some hope that Acronis will respond, but it shouldn't take to long!

Wow, what an useful answer, not!
Why are you posting that KB? Just getting your post count up probably?

1. I already have a working FTP connection to my NAS from within Acronis.
2. I already tested the connection from within Acronis and it worked.
3. I tested the FTP with a regular FTP client and then there is no 2 GB limit at all, so it's a limitation of Acronis True Image and not of my NAS.

The only thing I was wondering and which is probably the cause of the 2 GB limit, is that True Image is trying to upload the big file as ASCII, where every normal FTP client would upload it as binary and doesn't give any problems at all.

I managed to finally get in touch with support, using the chat function and the problem would be upgraded to level 2. So hopefully, hopefully they will provide me an answer or even better a solution.

In the meantime I have started looking for alternatives and trying them instead for the timebeing, until I get an answer back.

Well after I still hadn't received an email from Acronis, I decided to start a new chat session.

And it seems Acronis True Image isn't able to backup files bigger than 2 GB to FTP. It seems, I won't be purchasing Acronis True Image 2011, because of this. It's really unfortunate cause we wanted to use it also at work as a complete backup solution for 12 pc's. Oh well...

Acronis: Hello Michel. Thank you for contacting Acronis Customer Central. Please allow me 1-2 minutes to review your message.
Acronis: Thank you for your patience.
Michel: No problem
Acronis: As I understand, that you would like Acronis True Image Home 2011 to upload the file in ASCI mode than in Binary mode. Am I correct?
Michel: No you are not correct
Michel: it's the other way around, which is clearly stated
Michel: I am getting the following error: SIZE not allowed in ASCII mode
Michel: The problem is that Acronis TI 2011 is uploading the file in ASCII mode, but it should be uploading it in binary mode.
Michel: Clearly my messages aren't read correctly
Acronis: Micheal, I am sorry.
Michel: It's Michel, not Micheal.
Acronis: Can you please provide me the case number for which you had contacted earlier today so that I can have check an update.
Acronis: I am sorry for my inappropriate addressing.
Michel: I didn't receive a case number; you colleague with a difficult name, responded to the chat session and said my case would get higher level, I think she / he mentioned level 2.
Michel: But I should have received an email, which I didn't receive. And I also checked my spam folders, but nothing there.
Acronis: Thank you for the information.
Michel: No problem, though I doubt it was useful
Acronis: May I place this chat session on hold for 2-3 min while I check with my resources about the same.
Michel: sure no problem, take your time.
Acronis: Thank you Michel.
Acronis: Thank you for your patience. I still need sometime to complete my research, so may I place this chat session on a further hold of 2 minutes?
Michel: Sure no problem. :)
Acronis: Thank you.
Acronis: Thank you for being on hold. I appreciate your patience.
Michel: Really no problem. I really want to use Acronis over Paragon, cause I really don't like their layout and such.
Acronis: Michel, I checked with my expert team regarding the same.
Acronis: However, Acronis True Image Home 2011 software is designed to upload the files to a FTP server or NAS server in ASCII mode only.
Michel: Okay I understand, but then I have the problem that I am limited to only 2 GB files for uploading.
Michel: And I rather not split files, cause I really have a lot to backup.
Michel: Is there another solution or workaround?
Acronis: I thank you for your interest in Acronis Product. I will be taking your concern as a valuable feedback and enter this in Customer Listening System.
Michel: Michel: Okay I understand, but then I have the problem that I am limited to only 2 GB files for uploading.
Michel: And I rather not split files, cause I really have a lot to backup.
Michel: Is there another solution or workaround?
Acronis: I am sorry Michel, you can upload only 2GB of data at a time.
Michel: Okay, than I have no choice than to purchase Paragon software. We will be going to use Paragon as well for our bussines. Really unfortunate.
Acronis: I am sorry Michel. I have entered this in CLS and brought to the notice of our development team.
Michel: Thanks, but I doubt there will be a solution within a few weeks.
Michel: Anyways thank you for your time
Michel: Goodbye.

I like the way you decided for yourself that TI 2011 uploads files in ASCII mode (by the notion of SIZE command) and then even persuaded the support gal that it really designed that way so that she even confirmed it and that it is the root cause of the problem (feature absent => knowledge boost => happy customer).
