ATI Home 2011 Fails

Thread needs solution

I can't make a backup image of my system to an external USB drive with ATI 2011.

Not with my XP system, and not with my Windows 7 system. I had no problem doing this with ATI 2010. When I attempt a "Disk and partition backup", I keep getting the alert

"Confirmation

? Error occurred while writing the file."

What am I doing wrong?

Addendum:

When I restart my system. I get a "Operation has failed. Backup validation Task execution failed. Description: See operation log for details."

Furthermore, when I attempt to shut down or restart Win 7 Home Premium, I get the following screen:

"Operations are in progress. Please wait.
The machine will be turned off automatically after the operations are complete."

This takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. Major nuisance!

What's all this about?

Are you sure your USB drive is working properly?

The Operations are in Progress issue is most likely cause by TI2011 validating an archive. Apparently it defaults to validating the archives on a schedule. If the schedule is triggered when the PC starts up and you want to turn it off while it is still going you get the message. This drove my friend nuts as he couldn't find a global way to turn it off (you can do it on an image by image basis). He got so annoyed at this and other aspects of the UI that he recently dumped the program after using TI for years.

Gaslad: I am getting the same error about "Operation has failed. Backup Validation Task execution failed ... " on my laptop, even though NO tasks are scheduled and the validation option was turned on to validate during the creation of the backup, which it does do. ATIH2011 reports a successful backup, then the next time I boot my laptop, I get this stupid error message, which appeared around the time of the newest build and I subscribed to AOB. Not sure whether either relate to the problem.

As to your backup failing, I had a similar issue about a year ago. Ran a CHKDSK (USB External Drive letter:) /r /f and found out that the external drive was flaky (bad clusters - a lot of them). It was replaced by WD. I would recommend running CHKDSK or a similar diagnostic utility to check the USB External Hard Drive.

Have a great day.

-Phil

Here is the kb article about this validation issue:

Thanks for all the info, folks.

But I still remain with no viable way to back up my systems. I don't think this due to a bad USB drive, since I get the same message on both XP and Win 7 systems, using different (new) external HDs. Ran chkdsk on both, and found them to be healthy.

I can only conclude ATI 2011 is defective.

Gaslad,

Can you detail how you get to the error while writing the file?

If you upgraded from 2009, you should try to do a clean install
- move the tib files you want to keep to a hidden folder,
- from ATI, delete all your backup tasks,
- export your backup settings,
- uninstall,
- run the cleanup utility, http://kb.acronis.com/content/14871
- reboot,
- Install 2011
- import your backup settings
- recreate your tasks.

"Can you detail how you get to the error while writing the file?"
- Whatever backup I attempt to make throws up the same alert noted in my original post. Doesn't matter if it's a backup image of my system (entire c drive) or a backup of critical files, or of just my email. This message appears within a minute of attempting any backup.

"If you upgraded from 2009, you should try to do a clean install"
- I upgraded from ATI 2010. It worked perfectly for me for over a year (as did 2009 before it). Saved my bacon with backup images restored on more than one occasion. (not for malware, but for failing hard drives, since replaced).

" move the tib files you want to keep to a hidden folder"
- What tib files? The few I was able to generate were all incomplete/interrupted.

"from ATI, delete all your backup tasks"
- Done.

"uninstall'
- Did this once before, but will do again.

"run the cleanup utility, http://kb.acronis.com/content/14871"
- Ok, that's a new one.

"reboot, Install 2011"
- I will let you know how it goes.

I am grateful for your help. I'm not so worried about my Win 7 system, since it has a native backup imaging program. But I can't afford to lose the data on my XP Pro system, which has no such fall-back. Interestingly, I was able to clone all my XP C drive data to a 2nd internal HD.

I'll get back to you tomorrow.

If your real concern is data files then just use Windows Explorer to copy them to another location. Other options that provide a copy then verify the copy function are free programs like SyncBack free, Karens Replicator etc.

I use SyncBackSE for all my data file backups - I want the backup as individual files in their native format and folder structure not stuffed into a proprietary container file.

I give up on ATI 2011.

I consider myself a knowledgeable user, but nothing I try works. Not fresh re-installs, not uninstall tools or cleanup utilities, and not diagnostics on my various hard drives. All I get now are error messages, or screen freezes I never got before.

I had a good ATI backup strategy, and now I do not. It is that simple.

Thanks to all that tried to help me.
