ABR11 backup much slower than ABR10?

Thread needs solution

I just installed ABR11 (17217). I created a recovery disk. I also have an indentical ABR10 (13545) install and a recovery disk. I have a Dell PE2650 server with a sysprep'd image on it. I boot the recovery disk for ABR10 and do a backup. It takes 5 minutes. I boot the ABR11 recovery disk and do the same backup and it takes 45 minutes. I'm thinking of sticking with ABR10. Has anyone seen similar results?

No. i backed up 3 internal HDD's on a HDD (about 180 GB image size) and it took the same time as with ABR10.13545).
And tape backup (on a LTO3 HP drive) was also finished in almost the same time.

I'm glad you saw good results, I haven't. I'm still testing so I can have enough valuable data to open a trouble report. So far what I am finding is that, in my environment, there is a significant performance issue. I've been using ABR10 since the Beta program. My needs are simple. I have about 100 servers that I need to make full and incremental backups. Then if I have a system failure, (usually caused by testers), I have to restore the server as quickly as possible. Even under ABR10 the restores are very slow but the backups are fast.
Typically I build a server with W2K3 or W2K8, apply all the current updates, and then sysprep the image. I have 6 different models of servers, HP and Dell, so I can build from scratch with a sysprep'd image.
I have tested with identical Dell PE2650 servers. I have ABR10 and ABR11 installed on identical HP Proliant DL360 servers. All servers are on a gigabit lan.
I'm using the BootImage from the Acronis download site for each version. I boot the BootImage CD on the PE2650 and backup the sysprep'd system to local 'vaults' on the HP storage node servers. The sysprep'd image ends up about 4.5GB.
The results of the backup are that ABR10 take 4 minutes and 50 seconds, ABR 11 take 44 minutes and 55 seconds.
I'm not happy.

I have not seen this speed issue with ABR11 on our test servers I’m getting similar speeds... What I’m thinking is perhaps there is a driver issue or something in the ABR11 boot CD that your server is using? (Eg, a device might be running as USB 1 mode instead of USB 2 mode for example, Nic might be at 100 based instead of Gigabit speeds..etc..etc?)

A quick way to check this would be to create a WinPE based boot CD were you can ensure the drivers being used are the latest (as you can specify which drivers to include with the boot CD). I have a feeling you might get much better speeds.

I would recommend any one else with the same servers on this forum to see if they are also having the same speed issues and if so report the issue in the following topic so Acronis can include updates drivers for these servers in the next release of the Linux based boot CD:

Initially when I tried using WinPE in an attempt to get around this, I used the latest Broadcom driver off the Dell support site for PE2650 servers. This did not help. However when I used the driver from the Broadcom site (win_xp_2k3_32-14.6.0.6a) my backups now take 4 minutes and the recovery takes 5 minutes. The Wireshark trace that I did, using the default driver, show a massive amounts of 'retransmissions'. Now there are none.

BTW. Acronis support was AWOL on this one.

I'm trying the newest W2K8 Broadcom driver with ABR11. So far I can't get the 'Go' button on the 'Browse for Location' page to do anything.

Hi Ken,

Please ensure that the NIC has an IP address and that the drivers you are using with your WinPE boot CD match the correct Windows edition/version.

For example if you are using PE3.x that is based on Windows 2008 so ensure the Broadcom drivers you are using are for Windows 2008, just wanted to mention this at allot of people make the simple mistake of downloading the drivers required for the installed OK (on their system) and not the OS they are actually booting up with on the created boot CD.

If the correct drivers are being used and the NIC has the correct IP address it should work, if you run into any other issues perhaps Ken could let you know how he got them working or you could also contact Acronis support and they can have a look through the logs to see if they can find a reason for this issue but I believe the two suggestions above should get you up and running :-)
