Insufficient Space When Attempting To Restore Image???
Using the ATIH 2011 Boot CD I created a 'cold' sector-by-sector image backup of my WinXP C-partition. The backup completed and verified successfully.
When I attempted to restore that image to the very same C-partition ATIH 2011 refused to restore my backup image, reporting insufficient space on my target partition!!!
The total size of my C-partition is approximately 18GB, the very same size as when I created the image in question just a few days ago. So what can the problem be?

Do you have other partitions on the disk?
When using the CD, the partition letters may differ as the software on the CD is Linux. What is displayed as C by Windows may be D on the CD, etc.
Use partition size or used space or other characteristics to make sure you are selecting the correct partition to restore over. Do NOT use drive letters as the matching criteria.

Pat, I have a valid requirement for a sector-by-sector image and I don't see why that should have anything to do with my problem.
Grover, The drive in question is my laptop's 80GB drive which is partitioned as follows:
C: 'System & Progs' is approximately 18GB
D: 'Data & Docs' is approximately 60GB
There are no other partitions on the drive, hidden or otherwise.
ATIH identifies my drives with the correct letters. The compressed sector-by-sector tib image of my C-partition is only about 14GB, so why does ATIH 'complain' that there is insufficient space on my C-partition to restore that 14GB tib image???

Aaron,
Some users in this forum are more sophisticated than others. Some believe wrongly that a sector-by-sector backup is necessary to be able to recover their system. Some know why they need it. I just wanted to make sure you knew why you need it.
I am not even sure that your problem is because you use that option.
I was thinking maybe you can try to do your backup without this option and see whether you have the problem when you restore. That would separate the sector-by-sector option from the not enough space problem. Breaking down the problem is a way to get it solved.

Pat,
I use a program called Rollback Rx which is capable of instantly creating/restoring multiple system snapshots. It maintains its 'snapshot-map' inside hidden sectors within Windows free space. It also modifies (and shields) the MBR for its own programmatic purposes. Rollback Rx does its thing extremely fast and has proven to be very useful, as long as I'm able to boot my drive! If something prevents the drive from booting (an MBR issue, disk-crash, etc.) I have to rely on a 'cold' sector-by-sector image to fully restore *everything* on my C-partition. There is no other way (using ATI) to capture Rollback Rx's modified MBR and hidden sectors along with Windows' used sectors.

Aaron,
That makes sense. I looked around for compatibility between ATI and Rollback and found this thread: http://forum.acronis.com/forum/11084
There is a risk of incompatibility, from your description of MBR protection, but this is beyond my area of competence, since I am not really clear how and when ATI needs to access or write to the MBR.
That could explain the message though...

Pat/Grover,
Using an older ATIH 2010 Boot CD, I again created a 'cold' sector-by-sector image backup of my WinXP C-partition. This time my backup completed successfully and restored without any issues whatsoever!
So now I'm wondering if there might not be a problem with the 2011 Boot CD?

Hello all,
Thank you for posting and thank you all for your help.
Aaron, let me provide you with additional assistance please.
I sent this issue to our Testing Lab and I would really appreciate if you could get back to me or send me a private message with this report collected from ATIH2011 and ATIH2010 boot CDs.
Looking forward to your reply and if you have additional questions please let me know.
Thank you.
