Why did backup image split?

Thread needs solution

Hi All,

I have been using Acronis for a while. I recently created a full backup to a 240GB external USB drive. For some reason that I'm not quite clear on, instead of creating a single .tib file, it created 6 separate files about 4.1GB, as if it was backing up to DVD. I did not set it up to split like that. Can anyone tell me why this happened? Does it have something to do with the fact that the USB drive is formatted FAT32 and not NTFS?

Thanks.

Yes, the issue is FAT32 which has ~ 4GB limit.

True Image will still be able to restore them if the need arises - you just have to click on the first file and it will find the others when needed. But if that is all that is on the 240Gb drive , I would re-format the drive now and then make another Image to it.

Hi Bruce and DwnNDrty,

I had thought it might have to do with the fact that it was formatted FAT32. Thanks for the confirmation. I actually ended up creating a backup to a NAS that I had, and that created a single file as the NAS is formatted NTFS. The backup part of the operation completed, but the Verification stopped about half way into the process. The TrueImage interface didn't lock up, but the verification just came to a stand still. The network was still functioning and I could access the NAS from another computer, but the verification just stopped in the middle. Any ideas why, or is this a common issue?

Thanks again.

John

John,

When the validation failed to complete, was TI running in Windows? If it was, does it validate successfully when you boot to the TI CD? If not, does it validate successfully from Windows?

In some cases, if backing up to network drives and the files are very large, it may be best to split them. I think Acronis usually recommends using 2GB.

Hi MudCrab,

Thanks for responding. I wasn't running the validation from Windows, I was running it from the TI boot CD. I had selected the Validate option while doing the backup. The full backup completed, but the backup stopped. As I said, I thought it was strange because TI had not frozen. I was able to cancel, and shutdown the software.
