TI will not backup with USB flash drive connected
Hi,
I own TIH 2011 Update 2 6868. I also have a new 16G Patriot Xtreme TX Boost PEF16GUSB flash drive which I use for Windows 7 Readyboost. TI started acting weird, slow, lockups, crashes etc... The last time I tried to do a backup with the USB drive installed it took 20 minutes to get to the backup screen and then after it started it failed 5 minutes in saying it was unable to read from the source drive.
On a whim I turned off Readyboost ejected the USB drive and TI was working normally again.
I know there are some known limitation on what flash drives TI will work with but does anyone know a workaround for this rather than unplugging the USB drive everytime I want to backup. (I do not use either online or non stop backup.)
I opened a ticket with tech support but they take SO long to get back to you I was hoping someone else may have an answer.
Thanks for any help

Already have, no difference.

If you disable the readyboost service, do you have the same issues? I am trying to determine whether this is linked to the USB stick or to the ReadyBoost service...

It never worked right until I removed the stick from the PC. The stick works perfectly it just seems that TI does not like it.

Is it only that particular flash drive that causes the problem? Does TI run normally if that flash drive isn't connected, but another one is?

Yes, and I did every test I could find and the flash drive is working flawlessly otherwise. One of the FAQs says that incompatibility with some flash drivers is a know limitation of the software. Perhaps this is one?

You can try by disabling the USB drive in Device Manager
Type devmgmt.msc in Run > Ok, In the Device Manager console expand Disk Drives > Right click on the USB Device committed to Readyboost > Disable

Yes that works, but I was wondering why TI was acting that way with the flash drive installed and running.
Any ideas?

It apparently doesn't like the driver. Assuming the Patriot does not have its own driver, then I'd look to see what is driving it and if it's the latest possible from MS.
I have a brand-new Patriot 32Gb USB3.0 and while I don't use it with ReadyBoost it works great out-of-the-box (W7HPx64sp1).

Well the flash drive works flawlessly otherwise. It just makes TI not work properly. The drivers are the latest from Microsoft and there are no native drivers from Patriot. Does your drive work ok with TI?

I tried a low level format on the flash drive then reformatted it with the exFat format as Microsoft suggested but TI still does not like it. The drivers are the latest MS default USB drive drivers and there are no drivers available from Patriot. It seems to be a driver issue, are there any other driver options for me?

A wild guess might be to remove any drive letter assigned to the Flash drive via Windows disk management.

But will Windows still be able to use it for Readyboost?
I guess the only way to see is to try it I guess. I will post my findings.

My Patriot is plugged 24/7 and yes ATI works fine with it installed, though it's not directly involved in the backup at all (I boot from yet ANOTHER USB stick, and then image to a USB 3.0 drive plugged adjacent to the Patriot). The Patriot and FreeAgent bu drives are both driven by a Renesas USB 3.0 driver.

I just started using an exFAT USB3.0 USB flash drive and discovered that with this drive plugged in, ATI2012 won't function period. It sits there seemingly forever and finally reports it's not responding. Once I unplugged the drive, ATI2012-5545 works fine. I also noticed that ADD11-2121 can't read the drive map with an exFAT drive plugged in, and after simply opening and closing ADD11-2121, my exFAT USB drive needed formatting before I could use it in Windows! So much for Windows 7 support, eh?

Wondering if anyone else has had issues with their flash drives?
I run 2012 on both my laptop and my desktop, or should I say, use to run it on my desktop.
I use 2 2gb sticks, 1 4gb stick and 1 16gb stick. Every time I plug them in they take forever to read. If I unplug them, then replug, Windows says I need to reformat them. If I click on the drive it says; drive not accessible/ incorrect function.
If I reboot with anyone of them plugged in, most times windows will lose it's MBR, I need to get the Windows install disk to boot and repair the error.
I've tested booting from the stick I use for my Acronis recovery boot, If I want to read the log on it It tells me It can't read the MBR, then BAM!!!!!won't boot.
I don't run Readyboost, no cache on the sticks; hot swapping capable. 2 sticks use FAT32, 1 uses FAT and 1 uses NTFS.
I can definitely attest to this being a Acronis issue. I've removed 2012 from my desktop and have not 1 issue with any of the sticks or how they're used.
I will open a trouble ticket but thought I'd test the waters for opinions and user options.

Hi,
My issue is not rectified. With ATIH 2012 when the flash drive is plugged in it takes up to 5 minutes for the program to get to the point where I can start a backup. Then the backup always fails within a minute. With the flash drive unplugged ATIH works fine. Tech support theorized that maybe ATIH had a problem reading the flash drive because of "the different allocation size" however I formatted it with NTFS, just like all my drives for compatibility.
I reopened my case with tech support. Maybe we will get somewhere this time.
Thanks,

Similar issue Bob.
Patriot Xporter Magnum 64gb stick works perfectly in W7 64bit.
Installed TI2012. Works fine until I insert the stick, then will not load - not responding error. Nor is stick reckognised as Patriot by W7.
Remove stick and ti works ok.
Unistall ti2012 and stick immediately recognised by W7.
So, it appears I can have one or the other but not both.
However, ti2012 and a Datatraveller 16gb stick are quite happy together.
I have another pc running W7 64bit and ti2011 which works fine with the 64gb Patriot stick.
My conclusion - 2012 incompatible with Patriot 64gb Magnum on a W7 64bit setup.
Mike.

I replaced the Xporter XT Boost 16G with the same model 8G formatted with NTFS. ATI still takes longer to load, about 30 seconds as opposed to maybe 10 without the stick installed. And I was able to do a backup OK this time. It also validated OK. It also is working fine for ReadyBoost.
I saw a suggestion above about un-assigning a drive letter to the flash drive. I never got an answer to he question that will Windows 7 still use the drive for ReadyBoost if I do that?
Thanks,
