backup from different computer

Thread needs solution

I did a backup from one computer with xp pro. Restore won’t work on this computer. I got a new 320 gb internal hard drive and copied the backup to it. I have a computer at home with win 7 on it. Can I connect the hard drive to it externally and restore with that backup on that new drive and put it in the one with xp pro.

Thank You

You could try it. It would either work or it wouldn't. It's not going to hurt anything. The main problem is if the drive geometry is different on the XP computer than the Windows 7 computer. If the geometry is different, the new drive needs to be restored while in the XP computer. This problem is more often found on laptops, but does affect some desktops.

What isn't working when you try to do the restore?

The menu on the screen is unreadable. I have used the recover disc before and it worked fine on my home computer. I wondered if I can open up the backup and paste the contents on to the hard drive without using the recover disc.

You can't 'copy' files from .tib backup using windows explorer and get a bootable system disk as a result.
