Do Not Use TI 2010 With a RAID Setup - YOUR DATA WILL BE LOST!

Thread needs solution

I’m a current owner of TI 2009 and decided try the trial version of TI 2010. I uninstalled 2009 and installed 2010. I ran a complete backup. I then created the 2010 Rescue CD and decided to boot from it to ensure it would work. I booted in Normal Mode and it came up, but recognized my Raid 1 Set as two drives not one (the 2009 rescue CD works fine). I then booted into Safe Mode and it saw the Raid Set as one drive, but no longer saw my USB Drive. I decided to exit out and reboot from my hard drive. Guess what, it now said the MBR was corrupted and to insert my Windows CD to fix it. Well that’s a little tuff with OEM PC’s (HP) that don’t provide the original Windows CD. I then thought, I can restore the 2010 Complete Backup from my eSata Drive. I tried that and it said it said the archive was corrupt (it validated fine when it was created earlier today running under Windows). So let’s recap, the 2010 Rescue CD in normal mode doesn’t see Raid Sets correctly. In safe mode it corrupted the MBR and trying to restore an archive that was created and validate only a couple of hours ago fails! Where do you go from here? Well I booted from the 2009 Rescue CD in normal mode and restored a 2009 archive from Friday. Thank goodness for frequent backups and for a product that works – TI 2009. I think I’ll hang on to my money and stay with 2009 until they send TI 2010 through a QA process. This could have been a disaster if I didn’t have a working copy of 2009 with a complete backup!

I've noticed the same when in AHCI (and or Raid) mode and using an SATA dvdrw to boot the rescue disk from. Acronis have had different boot loader ISO's available on request which alleviate this problem.

Although saying this, it's something I've Not noticed on the latest TI versions/builds but something that I've noted on TI11 (and there was an alternative ISO to cure the problem , build 8054) , possibly fixed on V8101 (haven't checked). Also It was a problem I noted on DD10.

My way to avoid the problem is to always have a IDE DVD/rw drive on any PC build, as nearly all the linux boot loaders are happy that way, even when the Hard drives are in Ahci/Raid mode.

Acronis,

Please see my post above. Can you tell me if there is issues with the TI 2010 Rescue Disk supporting Intel Raid1 (ICH9). It works fine using the TI 2009 Rescue Disk in Normal Mode. Using the TI 2010 Rescue Disk it show my Raid Set as two drives. Am I going to need a custom ISO or will this be a correction to the standard Rescure Disk? Thanks

** Update **

I spent an hour on the Acronis Chat session looking for a solution. They provided me with an ISO file which I burned to a CD. I booted from the CD and once again my Raid 1 Set was seen as two Drives. I immediately exited the Rescue Media Environment and rebooted from my hard drive. The MBR was corrupted again and required a full restore using TI 2009. This means simply booting from the CD corrupted my primary hard drive. I then spent another hour on the chat session to come to the conclusion that it's broken and maybe they'll fix it. This is a serious problem. If I was a new user to TI 2010 and didn't have a copy of TI 2009 with backups I would have been screwed. I would recommend that no one purchase this product until the issues are resolved. I'm looking forward to migrating to Windows 7 in a couple of weeks and guess I'll also be looking for a new Disk Imaging Package. Any suggestions?

Dear Sir,

I purchased Acronis True Image Home 2010 CD last week from Amazon.com. I noticed that every time I create a backup (with verification) in a daily basis (Image) I get an e-mail message (I programmed that way) indicating at the end of the e-mail that the backup is corrupted and ended end with errors.

Also when I decided to load from the rescue CD I created via the menu interface, instead of choosing to load from Windows like I normally do, when I choose to load "Acronis True Image Home 2010" option from the menu, the computer display a message from Acronis...inc for a very long time (hours) and freezes. The last thing it did was my raid 0 disk array controller started to beep. I reboot the computer and everything was OK.

What am I doing wrong? I 'm just following the commands on the program menu. I started using Acronis from a trial version downloaded from the Acronis Site, I use the serial number from the CD without using the CD for installing.

My computer is a HP xw6200 Workstation, Dual Zeons 3.20 GHZ Hyper treaded, 6 Gigs of Ram. The OS is Windows XP 64 bits with the latest patches. The OS is in its own drive 750 gigs drive. I have a 1 terabyte raid 0 for the data. I also have a 3/4 terabyte internal 2nd drive D.

I'm backing (image) up c (OS drive), d (data drive 2) and the E Terabyte raid 0 array daily as the computer starts. If TI 2010 produces corrupted backups how can I trus this?

I noticed in this forum that there is a 2011 version of TI?

Thank you for your help,
Carlos Melendez

I had a similar issue from doing a backup. For some reason the Acronis 2010 Boot CD would not see my RAID1. Somehow, and I am not sure who is the culprit, my system would not boot giving an error BOOT/BCD error. I booted with the Windows Install Disk and it could not fix doing the Automatic mode. I then had to do a few suggestion I found at Microsoft's site reguarding the error. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392

I first tried from the command prompt...

C:\> bootrec /rebuildbcd
answered "Y" to the question after and then reboot... no fix.

Then I tried

c:\> bootrec /fixboot
c:\> bootrec /fixmbr

rebooted and everything was fixed again.

OK, this is fun. I have just finished doing the above again. This time I am certain it was the Acronis Boot CD. I first noticed my RAID1 was showing as two drives. Exited, restarted PC and got the Boot/BCD error.

Had to do a few extra steps to repair.

I can not use this product anymore. I will have to try Windows 7 built in backup and image. Too bad as I thought, at one time, Acronis was a great product.

Good luck to all.

This is a chronic problem with ATi and other disk imaging progs that rely on linux and linux drivers for the boot cd. You can try diff brands -- they don't all use the same drivers -- most of the bigger sellers have free trials. Or keep slogging with Tech for BootCD iso that has the right combo of drivers for you -- or try Shadowprotect -- doesn't have all the bells and whistles and costs more but uses windows for the BootCd so can use same drivers and your windows installation. Or you can try making a BartPE or VistaPE disk. Shadowprotect basically uses a VistaPE bootCD.

Thanks Scott, I hope the Win7 Backup will work. We will see when I have to do a restore. I have it from a reliable source in the disk industry that he does 3 backups and 3 recoveries once a month to keep testing their software. He said it was very reliable especially with the image.
