Backup freezes in Windows 7 (x64)! (& F11 Bootup Recovery stops Windows booting)

Thread needs solution

Just upgraded AHI 2011 to 2012 and now can't do any backups from within Windows 7 (x64). If I boot from a media disc I can backup fine. Doesn't matter if the backup is email or a disk/partition - it does the same thing. The only thing that changes is the percentage complete. I've also tried to change the location from my NAS to a local HDD but the same thing happens.

The PC also goes to sleep while backing up but this happened on the previous version and it could simply be because the app is freezing so Windows thinks nothing is happening so I can't confirm this until I fix the freezing whilst backing up problem. Options used during the backup were default plus validation post-completion.

Installing F11 Bootup Recovery resulted in my boot freezing whilst trying to load windows. Uninstalling the Boot Recovery fixed the problem.

Am running KIS2012 but the same thing happens as above even when I turn it off.

I'm now trying the backup with nil compression. Will report back if anything changes.

Can anyway advise me further on how I can start generating backups?

Stuart,

If you are using a mapped drive, try access the NAS via UNC. If that doesn't work, try FTP'ing into the NAS from TIH.

Is your PC a Dell by any chance?

Is your NAS a Synology?

Hi Colin,

I was using UNC with the NAS (selecting it from the very slow dialog box). Even though its shared through Windows it didn't appear. My NAS is a low retail end user (IOmega StorCenter ix2). I could set up FTP to see if that works but if the app can't backup locally I wouldn't go so far as to think it'll do it across a network.

PC was self built so definitely not a Dell.

The no-compression email backup has stalled at 34%. I just noticed that clicking on a task's backup location (which I know exists) gives me the error of 'cannot find location'. Perhaps AHI2012 is dropping the location during the task? (weird but I'll shoot for anything at the moment).

Do you have issues only with email backup? or any backup type that you try to complete on a local disk?

Hi Pat,

I've just created a new backup task (all tasks were created on v2012) which saves directly to the root drive of a local HDD. I've changed none of the default settings. The backup worked successfully.

I've deleted the email backup I was working and have created another on default settings saving to the same location as above. Let's see if this works.

Email task again has gotten itself stuck at 31%.

ATI has had various issues with email backup, so I am not surprised it doesn't work. We have now ascertained it is this email backup function that doesn't work.
I don't have suggestion on how to solve it directly. You could rely on a partition backup to get your email backup (at least backup files). If this is not practical, I'd suggest that you use a file backup of the mail storage folders instead. It is less incremental than email backup, and not as complete. You could use some other software (like Genie Timeline) that use block level backup of outook files.

ok. As per Colin's suggestion, I'm now trying to store a file over the network using FTP. It appears to be working albeit very slowly (1Gb network...)

Using FTP over a network worked (go figure).

Backing up my email (outlook) files use file backup works too... but the email backup doesn't. Am unsure why that's the case but at least now I can backup...

Still can't use the ASZ as it destroys the boot sequence....
