Defragmentation before backup

Thread needs solution

Hello

How can I setup full backup runs that follow a defragmentation run of the volume?

Not easily.

The best way is to make sure you schedule the full backup to run after you've defragmented the drive. Obviously if you use a defragmenter such as PerfectDisk which auto runs in the background you have no way of knowing when it is going to defrag, so you can't schedule a full to start afterwards.

If you defrag manually, then this becomes easy.

Hello Colin

For this client, we need a fully automated process. So, manual defragmentation is no option.

Does Acronic not include defragmentation in ATIH somewhere?

Hello Studi,

maybe you can work with the taskmanager (planer)
write a batch file, which start first your defragmentation over a console. after finishing this maybe you can start the backup.

Which defragmentation program did you use?

Hello David

Fine, that's a good idea. But why does Acronis not include defragmentation in its offering for planer tasks?
- Defragmentation is essential before each full backup.
- Why should each ATIH user develop his own solution for this common job of us all?

I'm just thinking, not asking for ...

Hello Studi1,

I'm not sure.
I have my problems with ATIH, too.

I'm angry about the Acronis philosophy that they are'nt able to release more patches or this soloution you need for the defragmentation.

I bought ATIH for the first time, and I'm not sure if it was a good idea.
But i will give Acronis a chance to fix this all problems.

I'm testing other backup products by other manufacturer.
Maybe I will change to them.

But back to your problem.

I proofed it again.
You don't have to make a bach file.
In ATIH you are able to execute a command before and after the backup.
You can put the command to start the defragmentation in the setting "execute command before backup" (sry i have it all in german, don't know if it is so in english).
You have to proof if the backup starts after the defragmentation ends or if it starts parallel to the defragmentation.

Hello David

Thank you for insisting.

And let's see now if this community works fine: Hello out there. Who could provide a solution to the defragmentation problem of AFIH in publishing it in this community network, so that we all do no longer have to invent our own solutions each of us?

I'm shure, Acronis will take up that ball once they have this feedback and a concrete solution available.

Thanks David.

I think the reason why there is difficulty in adding a run after defragmentation is -

1. Not everyone uses the Microsoft defragmentation program. For example I use PerfektDisk and before that O&O Defrag program, it would not be easy to cover all commercial utilities to catch when they start.

2. With Windows 7 came the 'smart' defrag mode and like the third party ones mentioned above, it is hard to know when a defrag is going to run.

Continuing David's suggestion, the best way around this at the moment would be to use the Windows Task Scheduler to run the defrag program using a schedule and then have Windows Task Manager call TIH again on schedule.
