TRUE IMAGE HOME 11...UNABLE TO CREATE VOLUME SNAPSHOT
While working like a charm with no hitches all year, Acronis 11 Home will not back up to my external Maxtor 500 GB drive. I get the error message: "UNABLE TO CREATE VOLUME SNAPSHOT...ERROR CODE E00070021 "
I ran chkdsk and it found no problems. Ran Norton Disk Doctor...no problems. Worked fine last week...don't know what to do!!! It recently backed up fine to my WD Passport traveling hard drive.
Do you have any suggestions? It's a long shot, but I somehow feel that McAfee VirusScan has something to do with this! ???
Thanks for your response.

Are you using the latest build of TI 11 (8,101 or later)?

I have the same problem with Acronis 11 (8,101) but it only appears at random, after the machine has been on for a while.
The only solution I have is to reboot the computer and then do the backup.

Hello all,
Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]
Jay and PC Guy,
It looks like the SnapAPI module has been corrupted. There can be several reasons of the encountered issue, for example, malware or, vice versa, Anti-virus software activity, corrupted registry, etc. Also the hard drive may contain file system errors.
I suggest you the following:
Download SnapAPI update and unpack the archive. Run the SnapAPISetup.msi file. Go through the wizard screens and hit Proceed to install the update. Reboot the computer to complete the changes.
PC Guy, could you please also check the disks for errors:
- Go to the Command Prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd)
- Enter the command: "chkdsk DISK: /r"
where DISK is the partition letter you need to check. Please note, that
checking the C: drive may require you to reboot the machine.
Thank you.

I have the same problem on a windows 2003 server, first I just rebooted and made a test that gave the same result, then after reading this post and checking my partitions scheme I noticed that I did have this kind of hidden partition so I unticked the EISA partition and get the same result, finally I installed the SnapAPI update and rebooted and made another test still with the EISA partition unselected and still the same error : I am running out of ideas because my products (console, program and remote agents) are all up to date...

I am experiencing the same problem. I downloaded the API patch, installed and rebooted. Also ran the disk check on the drive I was attempting to backup - the source drive. It did work two week ago but not now.

I got the backup to work.
I disabled my anti-virus program (and disconnected from the internet for security purposes until the backup completed) and the backup completed sucessfully.
The anti-virus program I have is eSet NOD32.

Hello Jan,
Let me assist you with the issue.
If you have updated SnapAPI driver and your disks contains no errors, then there may be another possible reason of the issue, the error may occur if you have a hidden diagnostic partition (e.g., EISA) on the hard disk. There are many hardware vendors that put such diagnostic partitions on the hard drives.
To fix it, you need to install another build of Acronis SnapAPI driver:
- Download the .msi file from https://www.acronis.com/r/support/en/kb/995/SnapAPISetup.msi
- Run it and install the update.
- Reboot your PC
If the issue still persists after the update, I recommend you to download and install a trial version of Acronis True Image Home 2010 and check if you still get the same error. Please let me know the results of your troubleshooting.
I'm looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.
Thank you.

I use the German version of True Image Home 11 (latest build) under Win XP-Prof. On my Harddisk are hidden partitions. Unfortunately I have the same symptom as written above. The solution proposal - installing SnapAPI Build 359 ( as written e.g. in KB1754) - does not help, although I have exactely the described symptoms and the cause "hidden partition". Do you have any other proposals (without buying a new software version)? Thank you in advance.

Hello Marcus,
Please try to use a different version of SnapAPI drivers to overcome the issue:
- Download SnapAPI update
- Unpack the archive and run the SnapAPISetup.msi file;
- Go through the wizard screens and hit Proceed to install the update.
(!) You will need to reboot the machine to finish the installation.
Please reply to this thread if the issue still persists.
Thank you.

Hello Ilya,
thank you for your reply. I downloaded and installed the linked SnapAPI update (it is SnapAPI Vers. 3.1.329 now). After reboot and backup-test the issue still persists - unfortunately. The error code is still the same: "E00070021: Snapshot vom Volumen kann nicht erstellt werden" (English "Snapshot of volume can not be created").
For additional information: I use a Dell computer with 2 hidden partitions, as Dell normally configures its "for home" computers.
Thank you!
Regards,
Marcus

Dear Marcus,
Thank you for keeping us posted and for your cooperation, I really appreciate it.
there can be several reasons for this issue, but it will be hard to investigate since Acronis True Image Home 11 is an outdated product. I wou ld like to offer you a workaround: installation of Acronis True Image Home 2010 Trial version. It is a full functional version with only 2 limitations:
- 15 days of work
- trial bootable media can restore only
This will help us to localise the issue and find a proper solution for the cause.
I would appreciate if you could kindly keep us posted. Should you have any additional questions or face any issues - don't hesitate to let us know, we will be glad to address every concern.
Thank you in advance for cooperation!

Has there been an update here? I have a similar issue where I am backing up to a NAS device and getting the Unable to create volume snapshot (0x70021) error. This backup has never completed. One thing - the computer being backed up does have RAID 0 running on it. This is hardware RAID so I don’t see how that would hurt a software backup program. I did update the snapi drivers but the problem still exists. I have a couple of questions... 1) This appears to be happening more with 2011 - is it possible to get a licensed (not trial) copy of 2010 - I would be happy to run with 2010 until the problem is definitely fixed. 2) When this problem is fixed how will I become aware of it?
I have a couple of customers I would like to get Acronis running on but I don’t feel like I can with this many problems.
Thanks

Hello Greg,
Thank you for your post and welcome to the forum. I will do my best to help you with this problem.
Volume snapshot errors are usually caused by an issue with the hard drive - errors bad sectors and such, or a malfunction of Acronis low-level drivers responsible for disk operations.
If updating the snapapi drivers did not resolve the issue, it is still possible there is a problem with the disks themselves. I found your open support case with us but I could not find any Acronis reports. Could you send it to me so that I can take a look at your disks?
I will follow-up with a private message with contact details for our sales rep in your state so that he can assist you with getting ATIH 2010.
To answer your second question, if it is indeed a malfunction of Acronis low-level drivers, we will need to look into it in order to understand why they fail. I would recommend to continue working on this issue with our Support representative.
Should you have any questions about your case or anything else, please let me know.
Thank you.

can I send the report to you privately? Probably no big deal but my customer has stressed privacy many times. I would prefer not to put anything personal in the forum. I do not have any problem working with the support rep. My customer prefers to not allow remote access meaning it is difficult for me to find a time to run reports and checkdisks on his computer. He also does not believe a checkdisk is necessary. That is my issue and I am letting you know because I have difficulties fixing this that are not of Acronis's making. I only wish that by looking at the forums maybe I can find something that will speed the process. If using the older version fixes things than that would be preferred.

Hello Greg,
I appreciate the follow-up and the report.
It looks like there is an issue with Acronis low-level drivers.
Would you be kind enough to contact our Support team directly so that we can investigate and fix this issue?
Please let me know if you have additional questions.
Thank you.

Hello Anton, Yana, Ilya:
I too am having the same problem on my DELL D830 which has one hidden Dell partition which I have UnHidden. I have volumes on the disk in this order: f: (dell), c: (sys=xp pro 32bit), d: (large data partition), unallocated (used to be SecureZone). ATIH 11 has worked ever since I got my DELL till recently. I can backup c: but not d:. I ran chkdsk /f/r etc. Folks I do not think this is an easy problem to fix. Not when the software once worked! Somewhere in the internal workings of the software something has been set that shuts Acronis down - I even suspect Acronis is the guilty party. I am going to EaseUS software for a try - can't be any worse... I hope Acronis wakes up and steps up with some midnight oil and finds the trouble. Please, no more non-sense from the Acronis team - just get your engineers to fix it! RESULTS speak for themselves.
