TIH2011 / 2010 - bootable CD hangs with Marvel 88SX7042 SATA controller

Thread needs solution

Problem experienced when trying to run True Image Home 2011 or 2010 from the bootable CD:

PC: Home-built, Asus P5K, Q9650 CPU, 4GB RAM, GT240 graphics. OS Win7 Home 64 bit.
Added a Startech PEXSATA24E PCie x 4 SATA controller card (Marvell 88SX7042 chipset) having 4 SATA ports (jumpers set for 2 ports internal, 2 external).

When trying to boot from the CD, True Image Home hangs at the point where its Linux kernel starts loading; the Acronis logo is visible in the top-left of the screen with the message "Loading - please wait".

The hang is 100% reproducible on this system, whether or not there are any hard drives attached to any of the ports on the Startech card.

To work around the problem I have to physically remove the Startech card from the PC, and boot from the CD with the hard disk(s) I want to back up/restore attached to ports on the onboard Intel (ICH7) or JMicron (JMB361) controllers. Then, the True Image Home bootable CD works normally.

Other bootable-CD versions of Linux, including the Fedora 14 Live CD and Parted Magic do work correctly when the Startech card is in the PC - so to me it looks very much like the issue is within the Linux kernel used in the bootable-CD versions of true Image Home (incompatible with the Marvell 88SX7042 chipset - but causes a hang rather than simply ignoring it).

Richard

It's undoubtedly a driver issue. YOu can try downloading the iso from the website for the bootcd -- this often has a slightly diff set of drivers. Login to the website and go to downloads/updates and loo for the bootcd iso. IF that doesn't helpt, then try contacting tech with a system reprot form within ati and see if they can't send you an iso that will work on your machine.

Thanks for the reply... I think you are right that it is a driver issue in that kernel.

I had already downloaded the current (build 6942) .ISO for the TIH 2011 bootable CD; this one and the original discs from the retail boxes of TIH2011 and TIH2010 all show the same hang issue with the Marvell controller.

And my 30 days' free support for TIH2011 has expired so I can't submit a support case unless I pay some $$$ :-(
And, looking at how quickly the boot process hangs after showing the Acronis logo in the top-left corner, I doubt that it would have got as far as being able to write anything useful in the system report
