USB Flash drive recognition slows when Trueimage home 2011 is installed
Hello,
Bought a new USB Flash drive yesterday - Patriot XT Boost 16GB.
I have other USB Flash drives, But this one took like more than 20 seconds to be able to access it on my computer, While others took 2-3 seconds.
Tried the Patriot on another computer with same motherboard and it worked well.
Installed fresh copy of windows xp sp3, The drive worked well UNTIL after I've installed acronis home 2011 !!! Then it became slow to recognise again.
Please advise,
Thank you

Hello Hagi!
Thank you for finding time to open the thread regarding this question! I understand your concern, and will be glad to shed the light to the situation.
I've carefully checked our internal resourced, and found no mention of a known issue that would match your description. However we assume that the problem is caused by the SnapAPI drivers:
SnapAPI are low-level drivers responsible for product interaction with the hard drives, attached media, and the snapshot creation. Once you attach the drive, or any other stporage media, it's been analysed by the snapapi drivers. This may cause the delay.
We would like to make sure that the product's working to your complete satisfaction, and would appreciate if you could gather the following data:
After that please kindly contact support directly with the information attached. Keep in mind that should there be any procrastination with the reply, you can always specify us the case number. We will do our best to speed up the process.
Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!
Thank you!

How has this been solved? My son in law seems to have the same problem.

I'm having the same problem, only worse. Not only does it take ~20sec for the device to appear, it appears in My Computer as a "Removable Disk" with "RAW" filesystem, instead of the correct Volume Label and FAT32. The USB flash drive works in other PCs. (It, too, is a Patriot XT 16GB.) I even tried re-formatting the USB flash drive in my PC (having Acronis True Image Home 2011 installed); the drive seemed to work fine until I safely ejected, removed, and re-inserted, at which point it took the usual 20sec and appeared as a RAW filesystem etc. (It still works in other PCs!)
I don't have time right now to collect the information requested; maybe later. If this was resolved for another user, then it would be very helpful (and save lots of people lots of time) if you could post some workaround or resolution to this thread. Until then, I'm going to try uninstalling Acronis TIH 2011 from my system to see if that helps; I only use TIH booting from USB flash drive (a very old 128MB Sandisk Cruzer Micro that doesn't exhibit the problem!) to do a full image backup. (I hope uninstalling from my system won't affect my doing backups in this way.)

Huzzah! Uninstalling Acronis TIH 2011 and rebooting has allowed my Patriot 16GB USB flash drive to be accessed correctly on my PC. It only took a few seconds after insertion. I didn't have to reformat it; all the files that should be there are there.
I haven't tried to do a backup from my bootable USB flash drive yet. I may try to kick one off tonight. I'll try to remember to post if it works.

I was able to do a backup from my bootable USB flash drive last night after having uninstalled Acronis TIH from my PC itself.
If I ever need to do anything with the Acronis TIH installation itself, then I'll have to re-install (and enter license #), do what I want to do, and then uninstall in order to get my (Patriot XT 16GB) USB flash drive to work again. For the foreseeable future, that will be sufficient. I would like to have this issue resolved in order to leave the software installed full-time for convenience (and perhaps to use its other features at some point), but I don't have time right now to collect the information requested in Yana's post above.
I'll throw in a few quick stats, though. My PC is a Dell E6410 with WinXP SP3. The USB flash drive appears to be widely available still:

I'm having the same issues here. My USB drive takes on the order of 2 to 3 times longer to be recognized by my computer. If have found this release to be riddled with bugs. Acronis, get busy on the update!!!!!

Hello,
the same problem here with ATI 2010 and my Sansa E280 on Windows XP SP3.
Stopp the Windows service "Acronis Nonstop Backup", set the type of autostart on "manual" and restart your computer.
If you do not need "Acronis Nonstop Backup", it will work for you - in my case the problem has disappeared.

Thanks for advice but my customer don't want stop any service. Problem is still present and support cannot find any solution from 2 months. It's look like there is no solution.

Hello Martinez and simplicissimus,
Thank you for your posts. Let me provide you with assistance please.
This issue needs to be investigated individually because it appears to be caused by a malfunction of Acronis low-level drivers responsible for disk operations.
Martinez, I was able to find your case in our system and the last e-mail sent to you by our Expert engineer was to collect SnapApi logs so that he could analyze them.
If you need additional help please let me know.
Thank you.

Has this issue ever been resolved? I'm seeing the same behavior with Acronis 2010 Home, on a Lenovo x120e netbook (Win7 64-bit), and also on a Lenovo T500 notebook (Win7 64-bit) with Acronis B&R 10. I uninstalled 2010 on the x120e, and the problem went away immediately. So this seems to be related to more than one version of Acronis.
It is odd: the problem only happens with some flash drives, not all. I have many drives that work fine, and several newer ones that have the slow recognition problem. At first I thought it might be related to the flash drive size, but I now have two different 4GB Kingston models, one of which works fine and one of which takes 45+ seconds to mount.
I love Acronis, but this is really an unacceptable bug. I'm happy to work with your engineers (I'm a software developer) to take whatever data is required to debug the problem, including even having them take control of my netbook (via remote control) if necessary.

Douglas,
Your previous comments are correct. I am a customer like you. I have found Patriot Brand Memory to experience the 45+sec mount time when the Acronis Non-Stop backup service is running. Stopping this Acronis service immediatly lowers the mount time to just 2 seconds. I have found that Corsair Memory seems to be immune from the mount delay whether the Acronis Non-Stop Backup service is running or not.
The Acronis Non-Stop Backup service has no effect on the performace of the USB drive after it has mounted. It only has the effect of slowing the initial mount process. I have veified this with CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1
If you are in the market for a new USB drive and are an Acronis user (of any version), use a Corsair memory USB product. This is the easiest solution.

I have TIH 2010 with build 7.160 installed and there is two parts to the USB flash drive problem and now I just found out that there are other USB flash drives out there that is having the same problem as my Patriot XT Boost 16GB. I have tested on a fast desktop (build 7.160 installed today) and on a fast laptop (before build 7.160) both with TIH 2010 installed and both are having the same problem and both are Win 7 64 bit machines.
1. My USB flash drive takes in the upwards of 40 plus seconds before it's accessable.
2. Once the flash drive is accessable and running TIH 2010 would also take in the upwards of 40 plus second before the main page appears.
Note: I did tried to disabled the "Acronis Nonstop Backup" service and that speed up the flash drive but did not help TIH 2010 startup time.
I really think there is something wrong with TIH software 2010 or 2011 which is conflicting with some USB drives.
We would be greatful if Acronis can find a solution for these issues or you will be loosing customers in the future.
My main purpose in buy this fast USB drive is to use it with the Win 7 ready boost feature and now I can't even use it for that or I have to choose to use ready boost or TIH.

Paul,
No one ever said anything about increasing or decreasing the TIH startup time in this formum. Having the Acronis Nonstop Backup service enabled or disabled will have no impact on Acronis startup time. This form only addresses the recongnition time for USB drive devices.
Take it from me a customer like you, not affiliated with Acronis. I have tried dozens of backup programs throughout the years to backup my workstations, homes pcs, and servers. There are a small number of reliable programs out there, however, Acronis is by far the best. Best in price, best in performance, best in recoverability of the backups. I make no money and get no recongnition from Acronis for making these comments. These startemest are time tested and true. It will be to your disadvantage to switch to an alternative product. I highly recommend you upgrade your TIH 2010 to version 2011. It is a huge difference in usability, and it has a much more user friendly interface than v2010.
P.S. The Win7 ready boost is a hightly overrated feature. It's more of a markeing ploy than a useful feature. You are not missing out on anything.

Andy,
Thanks for the input and I agreed that Acronis is one of the better image product out there but this USB drive issue was my main concern and I just brought the other factors in so Acronis have more information to possibly narrow down the issue because this is a combination issue directly related with USB flash drive and TIH 2010 and I think 2011 too.
I did not see any general fixes posted or maybe I missed it. If there is a work around or a fix that you know of then please point me to the right direction so that my flash drive can work along with TIH 2010 without having to wait extended period of time. You have mentioned that TIH 2011 may have huge difference in usability but I am skeptic regarding the USB flash drive issue which was reported as an issue for TIH 2011 as well.
At the present time, my USB drive does not play well with TIH 2010 and that should not have been the case where you have to choose between one or the other especially the problem begin after installing TIH 2010.

Paul, I concur. If it were a matter of upgrading from 2010 to 2011 (or 2012?) for me to solve this problem, I could consider that (though I like the 2010 UI much better ;-). However, apparently this is a long-standing and ongoing issue, and there is NO solution available.
I want to keep using Acronis -- that's why I bothered to post here. But right now I have NO option available to me that (a) allows me to use a version of Acronis TIH and (b) use my flash drive without an unacceptable delay, which is a very unhappy situation.

Acronis True Image Home 2012 .... [[Having the same problem with PATRIOT XT BOOST 16gig here]]. My main system / computer - Win7 64bit,16gig system ram. I can use it on my old computer win7 64 bit 4 gig system ram, without problems. I just purchased Acronis True Image Home 2012,but will uninstall and post results.

MY TIH 2010 is already out of their support period so there is not much I can do actively with Acronis and i will not move on to a newer version of TIH because the issue remains to be not fixed. If it wasn't for their high rating of their system image comparing to Norton Ghost, I will not buy them anymore just like I stopped using Norton Ghost when it used to be a good image software before they got bought out.
Dan Rocha or anyone that just bought the TIH newer version and is still under their support period, please contact them and give them whatever reports or technical information so that can pinpoint their software conflict issues with some of the USB flash drives. The extended wait time to be able to use a USB flash drive and the extended wait time to start TIH when USB flash drive in plug in is just not acceptable without a clear response from Acronis in my opinion.
I know that Win 7 is still considered a pretty new OS but USB has been out for a long time so it seems that the Wind 7 OS and Acronis is not playing well together with USB in the mix.

The problem with mounting USB Drives continues, it seems anything 16 GB plus takes ages to load when Acronis is installed. My 8 G sticks mount fine but my 32 G takes around a minute.
- Log in to post comments
I have investigated this further and have also had a discussion with the support team. They advised running an update for the API's which they gave me a link to, unfortunately this didn't help either.
For further tests I loaded Acronis on another PC running Windows 7 64 bit and indeed it also pushed the load time for my 32GB USB stick to over 1 minute from the usual 3 seconds. Now I uninstalled Acronis and the load time was then around 17 seconds. A system restore back to before I installed Acronis brought the time back to the usual 3 seconds. So I'm not sure what's happening but an uninstall seems to leave something behind which continues to slow large USB stick load times.

Hi
Its odd that they are having this problem with TI 2012 and brought out a fix for it!!
Here is what one person said...
"Same here. I wasn't experiencing any errors. It was just taking the computer over a minute to detect the USB flash drives. Applied the fix to both of my computers and the USB flash drives are being recognized as quickly as they should be (within 5 seconds). Thanks for the reference to the KB article. Have a great day.
Regards,
-Phil"
Wonder if the fix will work for previous versions?
- Log in to post comments
Yes Steve
The fix states its for TI 2012 not recognizing usb drives but it seems to work with the slow recognizing problem also.
Here it is...

Hope this helps.

Hello Pete
Thanks for the link. This does indeed fix the problem. There are two files in the download 'SnapAPISetup.msi' and 'VirtualDiskSetup.msi' and both have to be installed. The large USB Flash Drives then load in a normal time.
Then out of interest based on my earlier experience that even uninstalling TI 2012 leaves something behind I uninstalled both of these updates and what do you know? The problem remains resolved!
It would be a good idea if Acronis included these fixes in the package as this seems to have been an issue for some time.
Thanks very much for your assistance.

Hi Pete or Anyone out there,
If any of you guys still be able to contact support with Acronis, can you check with them if this fix would work for TI 2010 because I am out of support period and did not find anything out there in regards to patches for TI 2010?
Not sure if this patch is TI release specific or if it's Window specific which I am on Win 7 64.
Any help on this is greatly appreciated.
I am just wondering, how did you guys contact support (by calling or what)?
- Log in to post comments
Support weren't very helpful here it was Pete that came up with that. I am also on Win7 64, if I were you I would create a restore point, try this fix to see if it works for TI 2010. If not you can restore to the restore point you just created.
I had used the online chat to contact support by the way.

Hi Stephen
so glad it sorted out your problem, i guess my time spent at work bored and trawling the forums paid off ;-), i thought i had seen this somewhere just to a while to track back and find the thread.
Paul, i suggest you do what Stephen said to do, just make the restore point and go for it, after all you really have nothing to lose.

My concern is that sometimes you can't tell if this fixes the USB issue but then broke other hardwares and or softwares.
If this is a patch just to work with Win 7 64 (if it's only a tweak to work with Windows) and it's not TIH 2012 or other TIH specific then it might work, other than that, I don't think I am going to take the chance finding out later that something else broke and by that time it's a bit later to recover (slow USB mounting vs. unpredictable result).
What really sucks is that Acronis is got one of the top reviews for their image backup but their support is zero to none and their online support section is pretty much useless.
Thanks for the suggestion all.

Please fix this very annoying issue for 2011 as you have already acknowledged it released a fix for 2012
As it stands we don't know if we can patch ATI2011 and have this issue fixed.
This issue wasted 1/2 hour of my time finding the problem, and almost a minute every time the issue happens. It is bad business practice to expect us to pay for ATI2012 just to get this fix when you have already fixed it for 2012.
I could just apply the 2012 fix and see if it works but that might introduce backup problems and True Image is no longer near as robust a program as it was once and my confidence in its backups is waning.
