Please advise type of suitable external hard drive to be used with ATIH 2012

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I want to upgrade from ATIH 2011 to 2012, and back up to an external hard drive.

What methods of connection of external hard drives are suitable for this purpose?

I ask because there are 1. eSATA, 2. Firewire 2 speeds, 3. USB 2 speeds, and possibly some type of WiFi connection.

Thank you for your advice.

Royston.

Depends on what you mean by "suitable for this purpose." In theory, at least, you could use any drive supported by your operating system for backing up so long as you're satisfied with its transfer rate and capacity. Unfortunately, that's not necessarily true after ATIH takes over control of storage devices. ATIH 2012, even in its latest release, still seems to have more limitations than some previous versions, especially with USB-connected devices. Would be best to test for yourself using the ATIH 2012 trial download, but be sure that you have a full system backup before installing it so that you can revert easily.

Personally, pending availablity of native Intel USB 3.0 support, I tend to favour eSATA over USB, but that's just one person's opinion. There are many factors involved that only the individual can decide. Also depends to some extent on other hardware/BIOS setup considerations such as AHCI vs straight IDE support.
