Can't backup to Seagate GoFlex 3TB ext drive

Thread needs solution

I can't create a TIH 2012 backup on the new Seagate 3TB external drive I just purchased. I've found a few threads of similar issues but haven't seen any resolution. My issue is that TIH begins the backup process (using 'Other Backups') and then hangs after a partial backup and requires a re-boot of my PC to get out of the cycle (I have to also disconnect the drive from the pc to achieve shutdown). I've tried backing up both a large file (iTunes music) and also a small file with the same results. I can save other files on the new drive using drag/drop and the drive diagnostically checks out. FYI, I didn't install ANY of the Seagate backup software.

I've successfully used TIH 2012 to back up other files/drives on a different ext Seagate drive, but have no success with this. Considering my issues with the installation of the first release of TIH 2012, I'm feeling that there may still be some lingering bugs in this build. Any help is much appreciated!

Win7 32bit; TIH 2012 (latest build 6131); 3TB Seagate GoFlex Desk drive connected via USB2.0 (configured to no timeout for the backup).

Hi Rockfish1,

This might be related to the

1. Snapapi errors
2. Errors on the target drive

I'd advise you to try the following:

  1. Run chkdsk on your machine with the target drive attached
    Start -> Run -> cmd
    chkdsk /f /r
Hit enter, and the command line will offer you to schedule the disk check on the next system start up. Press Y (yes), and restart the machine. Upon booting Windows will check the drives for consistency and fix the errors if any
  2. Download and install the SnapAPI drivers update: Acronis True Image Home 2012: SnapAPI 640
    (to whom it may concern:
Acronis True Image Home 2010/2011: SnapAPI 586
    Other Acronis products: SnapAPI 380)

This should fix the problem, but if it doesn't, please gather Acronis Info, submit a case with the information attached, and let us know its number.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

I have a variation of this problem. With a new Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk v 2.0 3 TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive - STAC3000102 attached to my Win 7 64 bit machine Acronis tries to start then gives "Acronis TIH 2011 has stopped working" error. Won't work unless I unplug the Seagate drive. I applied the above snap api 586 but to no avail.

It seems like Nonstop backup continues to work to another drive but I cannot start the main acronis TIH 11 program to use it with the Seagate drive or anything else unless I unplug the seagate drive.

The Acronis TIH 2011 version is Update 3 (build 6942)

Please help

I have exactly the same Seagate GoFlex 3TB model as you connected to an onboard NEC USB 3.0 controller. This thing is blazing fast. I can backup to this external HDD without a problem. Now the problem is that I can't recover my backup because the bootable media of TI 2012 does NOT recognize my Intel ICH10 RAID5 array of 4 identical disks!!! So be aware that even when you luckily got your external backup working (and validated, I lost several backups many times using TI because the created tib file was not validated) you may not be able to recover the backup image (at least by using the provided bootable media, i.e., when your OS won't boot).

Bernard,
This could be a possibility

I can't get Acronis TIH 2011, version is Update 3 (build 6942),
to run with the drive connected. It fails every time the seagate drive is attached via usb 2 or 3.

Stephen,
Your attachment shows you are using version 2011--not version 11 which is much older. Always specify 2011 as your version. It would also be helpful to know which build you are using. Is it the most current? Build info listed in the help/about area. If you do not have the most recent build for 2011, I suggest you download the update and install.

It would appear you a driver for the 3 GB size . I suggest you contact support and see such a CD exists.

Grover,

Thanks for the info. But before I try (and spent more money buying the Plus Pack) what you suggested I would like to know if the WinPE media created by the method you have suggested already includes storage drivers by default? Otherwise, how do I add the latest Intel Rapid Storage Drivers using the WinPE method?

TIA,

Bernhard

I have no way of giving you a specific answer. There are drivers included in the WAIK but not sure if your needed driver is included.

Why not try contacting Acronis via Live Chat and get their response.

Hello,

Can anyone tell me if this has been resolved? I'm having the exact same problem. My backup kicks off just fine but after about an hour or an hour and a half into the backup process, I can hear my 5 TB USB 3.0 Seagate BackupPlus External Hard drive disconnect and reconnect from my computer running Windows 7. The backup then stops and Acronis indicates that it cannot find the device. If I click retry, it will resume creating the backup but with a new .tib file (e..g _s1_v2-2.tib) I've run disk checks on the external drive and they all pass just fine. I've checked all the cables and configuration settings suggested above and they are all fine.

I'm beginning to think there is something that isn't functioning right with the drive or that there is a defect as I have another external hard drive of the exact same model and it works without the seemingly random connects and disconnects.

So, before I go out and buy a new one, can anyone tell me if they were able to resolve this issue or do yo think it's just another defective product by Seagate?

Statisitican13,

You can, before going for RMA or purchase replacement, try this: install the Seagate drive manager utility and run it. It will show you any Seagate drives attached to your machine. Go to the one that's being problematic, check its properties, and turn off the power saving mode. It will write to the drive's firmware that it should not shut itself off to save power, and the drive will stop disconnecting. The downside to that is that the drive will always be spinning when it's plugged in. You can then use Windows power management functions to power down the drive when not in use.
