Cloning a partition on a disk instead of the entire disk
I'm trying to clone the C: drive on a HD that is currently partitioned and I'm trying to clone the C: partition only to a new SSD I recently purchased. I tried using the clone drive tool but it won't work because it's trying to clone an entire 600gb drive to a 64 gb SSD which obviously won't work. Am I doing something wrong?

Pat L wrote:You cannot clone a single partition. Cloning is to produce a disk identical to the original one.
You have to create a disk and partition backup.
See this post for similarities.http://forum.acronis.com/forum/27980
Pat,
I'm asking this exact same question here, as I want to migrate data from a partition to a 180GB SSD using the Intel Data Migration Software. I currently have my OS and data taking up 127GB of a 300GB partition, but the entire drive is 2TB.
You mentioned, as I quoted above, that one would need to "create a disk and partition backup". Could you direct me to where I could go about doing that?
I followed the link to the other forum topic, but I didn't notice the relation.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Best,
Chris

Chris,
Check out these guides to do a disk and partition backup.

Thanks for the quick reply, Pat!
So I'm not exactly clear on how this will enable me to move the OS onto my SSD. Once I've got a backup of the OS partition, will I be able to boot from the backup?

You would restore the backup to the SSD. Check the guides, as you'll want to follow the process to restore to a drive that is a different size than the original.

Chris,
There are 2 steps. First you backup. That creates "images" stored into compressed TIB files (the backup). Second, when your disk dies, or when you replace it, you go through the restore process of (typically) the last image you made. To do this, you use the Acronis recovery CD.
This process is more convenient, safe and reliable than a clone process. A clone process is a combined backup and restore without storing the image inbetween.

Thanks for the help Pat, and the advice Tuttle!
I was able to successfully backup my OS partition in Windows, verify it, and with the bootable recovery disk recover it to the new SSD.
...and here I am, at 4:36am, running smoothly.... :-)
Many Thanks,
Chris
