Blue Screen since upgrade to 2012
I did an in place upgrade from 2011 to 2012, and around the time my system was doing an initial full backup, the system blue screened. I think this is the first time I've ever had a BSOD on my system. Running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Nothing else has been installed since I upgraded.
Before I submit a support ticket, has anyone else had an issue with this? I'm going to wait until tomorrow to see if it happens again.

It is always better to uninstall an older version before installing a new version, even a new update. Although this results in restarting backup chains, it is usually much more reliable.
In your case, without Acronis support, it will be hard to diagnose what going on. I suppose some low level driver was not properply uninstaller or updated.
If you can, restore your system to prior to the upgrade. Uninstall ATI 2011 and use the clean up utility (unless you have some other Acronis software installed). Reboot, install 2012.

Can either of the two OP's post the BSOD code they are getting?

Well it hasn't happened for a few days, so fingers crossed it was a one off. I've had a full and incremental backup without any issues, so I"ll let it run for a few more days to ensure it's stable.
However, I did analyze the BSOD message via the minidump, and here is what it said:

Well my intent was to uninstall/reinstall it as per the instructions above, but mine stopped failing too. Looks like the one above this is an 0A stop where mine was an F4. F4 says probably a device driver. Mine F4 crashed a total of 2 times and is hanging in there now, so I'll wait and see for now.

0xF4 driver problems might be due to SNAPMAN references being left in registry if there has been a previous TIH install.
0x0A, I'll have a think about.

Decided to update from TIH 2011 to 2012 today.
During 2012 installation my computer blue-screened - first time ever (!) running Windows 7. Not very reassuring.
System: Win 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 running on a Lenovo T500 with 4GB RAM.
After rebooting from BSOD I notice an "Unknown device" in the device manager:
Device instance path: ROOT\ACRONISDEVICES\0001
Hardware IDs: root\vididr_bus
Config Flags: 00000040
CONFIGFLAG_FAILEDINSTALL
Intall date: time of the BSOD
According to control panel/Programs and settings, I still have TIH 2011 installed.
Thinking I might try to uninstall TIH 2011 now before retrying the 2012 install.

Try to deactivate your security software during the install. This made a huge difference in my case.

2012 is a piece of crap that should never have been released.
Now i can add the BSOD to my long litany of bugs I've found.
After a backup, Dell Optiplex 755, Windows XP, I get a BSOD as soon as it finished.
Also, during a backup, I had the temerity to open Windows Explorer and try to view the contents of a CD. Same BSOD.
Any ideas are appreciated.

What BSOD code do you get and is there a text message with it?

eOX,
Some other users have BSOD because of the Acronis Virtual Disk. See http://forum.acronis.com/forum/24547 post 7.

I too have had BSOD on install 2012 - have posted details elsewhere.
This is the only item of s/w that I've ever installed that has failed so seriously - I've NEVER (in 20yrs with W95, W98, XP, W2k, even Vista and now W7 across 20+ PCs / laptops etc) experienced such a poor upgrade/installation product. Very disappointing - and downright dangerous!
There must be a VERY serious design flaw in the product to put users at such risk. BSOD is a serious matter - many users would not be able to patch - Many users wouldn't think it necessary to back up full system prior to doing the upgrade!
Should perhaps freeze the upgrade / stop selling until patched. Certainly some BIG WARNINGS should be issued given substantial risks.

I have had a disaster in the past 2 days with ATI 2012! It completely blue screened my laptop. If I did not have a older prior image from another party (LapLink) I would have been hosed!!
I decided I no longer need this hassle. Too many critical issues and this is really dangerous. I decided to remove the ATI 2012 after it failed a scheduled backup from my desktop. This has been a nightmare! Using the Control Panel removeal process, It hung during the uninstall for 2 hours! I had to TM End Task so I could possibly do work. After that I rebooted. This now has a BSD that goes by so fast I can just recongnize it as one. I inserted the orig Win 7 DVD and did a repair. It had to do a saved state restore. This brought my system back but now the Acronis is half installed some services are still running (Agent, etc). I used their ATI 2012 DOS removal tool. This again hosed my system with a BSD. I did another restore. I am back to where I was.
I disabled the Acronis services for now. I am in limbo at this point. I see a complete Win 7 install coming! What a sorry release from a once reputable company. I have used their products for many years to come to this. No excuse for this shody release to cause sooo many users problems and in my case lost time, money and trust!!!
I have decided to perform a reinstall on Win 7 and will use another product. Possibly EaseUS. I don't even want to waste my time getting a refund. Seeing a lot of the issues this product has had over the past few months shows it is using paid customers as testers and QA!!!
Goodbye and Goodluck

Johhny,
You refer to an 'agent' which agent, and what services still appear?
Which uninstaller did you use th eone for 2011 or the one for 2012?
It would be useful if you could recall what Windows reported was the problem with the STOP code and any text message.
If the uninstall process had a problem, it is quite possible the actual install process hadn't succeeded correctly, running a repair install might have solved that problem.
If it was possible to boot into Windows SAFE mode, the better option would have been to select the 'last known good boot' option (words to that effect). It is most annoying that Microsoft in their wisdom changed the repair utility for Vista and W7 to only fix one problem at a time, requiring many attempts if there is more than one issue.

Hi Colin, I have not started a Win 7 reinstall yet. I did use the 2012 removal tool as stated in the last comment. It reported success...
The agent is the Acronis Sync Agent (version 15.0.5583). If I use the windows unInstaller, it says it works and its removed from the Control Panels Progam list. All is well until I reboot, I get a very fast BSD. The only way I have found to recover is by using 'last known good' booting from DVD. When the Win 7 recovery starts it shows that my Windows boot is on drive F: and not C: for some reason. I have a C:, D: partition and the DVD is E:. After the recovery though I am booting from drive C: okay.
I am using version 2011 on a second laptop (I have 3 licenses). I first just tried to install 2012 (before 2011) several days ago only to get a BSD where it reported a problem with the vididr.sys driver. This was on a Lenovo T61 using Win 7 SP1. I recovered by using a boot DVD with LapLink Disk Image. I was using that product on the laptop prior to Acronis and had made an image. I then installed ATIH 2011 and this seems to be working right now. I do not dare upgrade to 2012 again and I may go to EaseUS backup.
I was using version 2011 successfully on my workstation for quite a while and had done a few updates as they were made available. All things were working fine until the 2012 update. I really liked the new UI in 2012. All I want to do now is successfully remove this Agent without killing my system.
- Log in to post comments

Johnny,
I have done some experiments. If the sync agent is left behind, this can be uninstalled separately and all should be OK.
When you use the Windows install/repair CD it loads the recovery files into a virtual drive which it allocates as 'C', hence all other drive letters get moved, as you've noticed when you boot back into your system the letters are back to normal. Windows keeps drive letter assignments in registry not on the actual disk.
I've got 2012 installed on a Lenovo X61 and it plays OK, so I wonder what software/hardware differences the T61 has versus the X61.
- Log in to post comments

The Sync Agent is a separate item and the only Acronis item left. I did perform a separate unInstall and that is when I get the BSD on reboot. I am afraid of doing it a second time at the moment. I need my system for some critical work at the moment.
The hardware is a Centrino vPro Duo running at 2.6 ghz (T7800) with 4GB memory and 32 bit Win 7 SP1. The hard drive is a Western Digital 320 GB (WD3200BEKT) SATA. Network is Intel 82566MM Gigabit. Video NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M.

I have bought ATIH 2012 because I had good experiences with the freeware tool from Seagate. In the midst of the installation process I had a BSOD saying there's something wrong with vididr.sys. At first I ignored the problem because I had no time to invest in deep system investigation, because the rest of the system runs without any problems. But during the installation of a program for audio tracking I got the message which says that AITH was not installed properly. I think both programs use same installation routines. The installation routine was able to roll back the aborted installation of AITH 2012 and I was able to install the "Audials radio tracker". After that I had the problem that all my USB hard drives or memory sticks doesn't work any more. Device manager said "driver is not installed properly". So I tried to update to build 6131 of AITH to solve this problem and had the same BSOD as above. But I was able to start program. A funny thing because of the aborted installation. But I was not able to activate it. So I tried to install the therefore provided hot fix from the same download location, but a message appears which says that the hot fix is not suitable for this version. Then I tried to install the so-called PlusPack (didn't know what it really is but I gave it a chance as my last thing to try). A message appears that there is no AITH 2012 installed. Funny, I was able to start it. After that I had a long dispute with the support chat from Acronis. But way they are not able to help me until now. So I use the removal tool for the 2012 version and I got back my access to see USB memory devices. So this error was definitly caused by Acronis. Next time I will look into the forums before I buy the software. If I had seen the mass of problems with it before I surely wouldn't buy it. As my predecessor said "Too many critical issues and this is really dangerous." Let's see wether the support will find a solution for a successful installation of the program. I have sent them my system report. The Acronis Info Tool and the Acronis System Report Tool failed under Windows 7/64, so I had to boot the system from a Acronis Boot CD. Lot´s of time invested...........

Hello Holger,
Welcome to our Forum, it's nice to have you with us. I'm really sorry for the inconvenience you've faced with the product, and support. I'd like to help you with the matter.
I've checked with the development team: we did have an issue opened regarding BSOD caused by vididr.sys, but it was fixed in the Acronis True Image Home 2012 Update 1 (build 6131), which you've already tried to install. The only reason I can think about is the remains of the first installation attempt. I would advise you to remove all remains from the system with the help of Acronis True Image Home 2012 CleanUp toll, and re-attempt an installation.
If the problem remains, please send us Windows mini-dump, our developers will be able to find out the cause of the problem.
Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!
Thank you.

Updated from ATIH2010 to 2012. Made a full back-up without problems. The next scheduled incremental b/u did not start. When I later tried to start it from the log I got the "Action started" notifier, immediately followed by BSOD.
Messages:
PAGE_FAULT_IN_ NONPAGED_AREA
STOP:0x00000050,(0x940C15FF,0x00000008,0x940C15FF,0x00000000)
The minidump shows the word PAGE repeated umpteen times.
Using XPPro SP3 all recent updates.
One oddity: A scheduled ATIH2010 daily incremental b/u was performed AFTER the 2012 installation and full backup but not repeated 24 hours later.

Hello Yana,
thank you for the warm welcome in this forum. After I used the True Image Home 2012 CleanUp Tool I was able to install ATIH 2012 without problems. Thank you for your help. now I can begin to explore the program. At first I wanted to make a full backup from my system drive c: to my data drive d:. ATIH says,it did need 44GB of disk space for that, but on the system drive there are only 27GB to backup. Curiously! With my old freeware " Seagate Drive Wizzard" the backup data was smaller than the original data. But that this is another topic and does not belong to this BSOD topic....
Merry Christmas to all that you read this entry in this days.

Hi all,
I got repeatedly BSOD STOP F4 with the newest 6131-Build. Unfortunately never a minidump could be saved. It don't happens when restarting my system after Sleep, as above was described.
Last BSOD which happed few minutes ago:
During outlook 2010 was e-mail updating and a acronis-backup has been started.

I've been working with tech support since 12/8/11 to get 2012 installed. They've been pretty helpful and even called once. I won't go thru all the nightmare BSODs I have endured but will just list what I did to come to the conclusion that Acronis and Norton don't get along. At least on a system running 64bit Windows 7 Pro. Note, I haven't had any conflicts on another laptop that runs Windows 7 Home Premium and has Acornis 2012 and Norton Internet Security 2012 installed. So this is what I've sent to Acronis tech support:
Acronis 2012/Norton Internet Security 2012 Conflict
I think I’ve solved the BSOD problem with Acronis 2012. After a process of elimination I’ve come to the conclusion that Acronis and Norton don’t like each other. Following are the steps I took in arriving at that conclusion:
1. Uninstalled previous version of Norton AV so I’d have a “clean” start.
2. Set a System Restore Point, 12/24/11. (Note: This really makes recovery easy.)
3. Installed Acronis 2012 and 2012 Plus.
4. Created Backup schedules but no backups. (No problems thus far.)
5. Installed Norton Internet Security 2012 (Includes Norton AV).
6. Updated Norton program and started Quick Scan.
7. Less than a minute into the Quick Scan BSOD.
8. Shut down in Safe Mode for the night.
9. Started computer up normally 12/25/11.
10. Did some e-mail and internet work. (No problems).
11. Put computer into Sleep Mode for an hour or two.
12. Awoke it and logged in….BSOD.
13. Tried to restart normally….BSOD.
14. Restarted in Safe Mode and performed System Restore prior to Acronis 2012 and Norton 2012 installations.
15. Reinstalled Acronis 2012 and 2012 Plus only.
16. Performed a couple of file backups. (No problems).
17. Put computer into Sleep Mode for several hours.
18. Awoke it and logged in to do some work with no problems occurring (No BSODs).
19. Came to the conclusion that there is a Acronis/Norton conflict.
20. Shut computer down for the night.
21. 12/26/11 Computer starts normally with no problems.
22. Performed a System Restore to 12/24/11 pre-Acronis/Norton.
So it seems that when running by itself there isn't a problem but running with an AV program such as Norton there is. So at this point Acroins is off and Norton is back on. Hope this helps shed a little light on the problem.

@Kjell,
Verify that you have only 2 Acronis devices in your computer devices: ACronis Backup Archive Explorer, and Acronis Virtual disk Bus. Remove any other.
If this doesn' solve it. Donwnload the 2012 clean up tool here http://kb.acronis.com/content/24545, and the 2011 utility here http://kb.acronis.com/content/14871.
Uninstall 2012, Reboot. Use both clean up utilities. Reboot.
In msconfig, disable all non-microsoft startup items and all non-microsoft services. Reboot
Reinstall 2012. Verify this solves your problem.
In msconfig, enable the disabled items.

@Joshi,
COuld be a variety of issues.
What are the codes of the F4 STOP?
First run chkdsk /r on all partitions (this can take a while if you have a big disk). Then run memtest86 overnight to verify the memory. If no issue, move on the next step:
Then run sfc /scannow to verify the OS files integrity. If no issue, move on the next step:
Finally, run msconfig, disable all non-microsoft services and start up items. If no issue while you use your computer, reenable progressively the items to find the culprit.
If you still have the issue, there is probably an issue with the registry, some driver issues/conflict. This would be best solved by a clean install of Windows.

I uninstalled completely the Acronis folder, checked registry for any references and removed them and made a new installation of the 2012 update (I had to dig out the license code for the previous version in the process). I have only 2 devices in the device manager. I thought that I finally had it working, since yesterday it made the scheduled incremental backup, without any visible problems. But today, at the scheduled time, I again got the BSOD, this time with the STOP code 0x0000007F (0x00000008,0x80012000,0x00000000,0x00000000). The minidump again says PAGERROR and is then largely filled with PAGEPAGEPAGEPAGE...
After restarting of the computer the scheduled incremental backup looks like have been performed. But having a b/u software you cannot trust completely is worse that having none at all.
It is unfortunate, since previous versions had the reputation of being the best b/u software, Acronis has now released 2012 in this kind of paid-for beta test version. I, for one, am not prepared to spend more time trying to get it working properly. It's like being trown back to 1979 when I got my Commodore 3032 computer. At that time we expected software to be buggy, it was part of the hobby. But that was 32 years ago.
So now I wait for a working version of 2012. In the meantime I will have to rely on Windws b/u or Syncback or something like that.

Very funny but I'm expirienced very simular issues like you Robert. It differs only that I am using Kaspersky and I came also to the conclusion that there must be a serious conflict between kaspersky and acronis. Over a period of 2 weeks I'm investigating with Kasperksy support why...
1. I can't run a full virus-scan anymore. The system freezed evertime or I get BSOD.
2. regarding Kaspersky support I haven't installed kaspersky-suite properly, even I used a kaspersky cleaning-tool and during a new installation in msconfig, disabled all non-microsoft startup itemns all non-microsoft services.
Without having a solution yet from kaspersky support I have done this:
1. used the atih cleaning-tool
2. searched manually for any acronis keys left and deleted them
3. run a full virus-scan. IT PASSED!!!
without having atih 2012 installed i could run a virus-scan without getting my system freezed. Hopefully the bsod will be also gone.

And I am using McAfee. If 2012 cannot cope neither with Norton nor Kaspersky nor McAfee I think that we can conclude that Acronis is in big trouble.

Do you have any defragmentation software installed?
Seems like your stop code is linked to a hard disk error or driver...
- Log in to post comments

I though also firstly it must be associated to my diskpeeper defrag software. But in the meantime I uninstalled it. I got the last BSOD without having diskeeper installed. So that's out of the question.
As I said, I checked my hard disks with many tools. there are fine, the smart-value are good.
could you please answer me this question:
why I got my last bsod during outlook 2010 was done e-mail updating and a acronis-backup has been started at the same time?? (For me very acronis-suspicious as I know acronis dont like outlook, I had may issues in the past with previous-version)
- Log in to post comments

I used MS defrag of the main HDD about 3 weeks ago, followed by a full image Acronis b/u. No problems at that time. I also checked the b/u HDD, but no defrag was necessary (less than 10 pct).
Btw, just made a quick virus scan and McAfee had no issues. Next scheduled b/u is in 21 hours - will try to keep attention then.
- Log in to post comments

Very interesting. Seems like the AV is the problem no matter whose it is (or rather Acronis is). You can't have every AV software supplier come up with a workaround for Acronis. Hopefully they'll find a solution to this problem. And, when they think they have and come out with an update I'll try it but only after I SET A RESTORE POINT!! That makes it so much easier to get back to square one.

Add VIPRE, CA and Avast to the list.
How can such a great product turn to such garbage in a single version?
- Log in to post comments

I'm not so sure that there is an inherent conflict with a range of firewall/AV software, more that it is likely a combination of the TIH drivers with probably real time protection and some other as yet undetermined combination of software.
My reasons why are; that to my knowledge Vipre, Avast, Nortons and McAfee don't share the same 'engines' (though I think CA might share with Vipre) so there is no one common component part (it works OK with BitDefender, but then hopefully so, as the Acronis firewall is based on BD). Apart from firewalls per se sometimes interfering with the install of Acronis drivers, if there were a major problem with the most popular firewall/AV's I would expect to have seen thread after thread on the forum on that single subject, it would also quite possibly have been found in beta testing.
I suspect that the commonality lies in a 3rd part as yet unidentified, so that when all three (or more) are together the problem occurs.
Are those with this problem all running Vista/Windows 7 Pro and above 64 bit?
What video cards are being used, and are the drivers up to date?
Is everyone on the same SP and interim updates from Microsoft (the last update from MS has caused a number of prgrams to use over 70% of all four cores of my CPU in an intermittent fashion - not down to 2012 as this machine has ABR11 installed on it.)?
- Log in to post comments

Colin,
Thanks for your thoughts. I'm using Win 7 Pro, 64bit with SP1. I keep it pretty well up-to-date. My video card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 series with 1/16/2011 driver date. I previously had Acronis 2010 existing peaceably with Norton AV 2011 so I don't know where the problem might lie. Also as I noted above the 2012 version seems to work just fine on my other laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium on it. Hopefully the information we provide here will be helpful to those searching for a solution.
Maybe my tech support guy, V Chatavardhan will have an answer. They seem sincere in wanting me to have a successful installation.

Possibly, but maybe not. When software like ATI or Diskeeper install low level drivers, they leave things behind very often. I cannot point finget at Diskeeper though, just making a general statement.
As I said, I checked my hard disks with many tools. there are fine, the smart-value are good.
The SMART values are only some indicators of key parameters that can be leading indicators for disk failures. If you ran your manufacturer's disk diagnostics and/or chkdsk /r you are fine.

I run a long manufacturer's disk diagnostic, without any issues. Kaspersky-support wrote me know back, they suggested me as well to run a chdsdk /r. So I will do it again :-(

Yes, I have VSS-error entries in eventviewer. I disabled VSS, as I though I will not need it, since I have Acronis installed.

This time the incremental b/u seems to have gone well - at least no BSOD. It is confusing, however, that the b/u screen does not indicate what schedule is active. Instead it says "Schedule: Turn on".
Next I decided to try to restore a folder. ATIH used a lot of CPU capacity, but nothing much happened. First it told me "Please wait" for about five minutes and then something like "Creating destination list" for another 25 minutes, after which I abandoned the process.
DOES ANYBODY KNOW IF 20212 WORKS AT ALL?
- Log in to post comments

Sure. If you ignore all of its annoying interface and activation quirks and disable all of its semi-functional background services, it works fine with a "plain vanilla" desktop using only a straight IDE drive controller. It can even use USB-connected drives (well some at least) if legacy support is enabled in BIOS. Anything else is anybody's guess. Some will be okay, more or less. Some won't.
On the other hand, if you do need to disable all of its buggy new features and gimmicks, it does tend to make the "upgrade" value just a little bit questionable.

Richard, I see what you mean. I am now back to True Image Home 11, build 8101. It's been doing the job for me since 2008, in spite of its lack of bells and whistles. Ironically, during the update mess, I had a complete v.11 in my backups, but could not restore it, since I had no working ATIH! Luckily I could find my original download and old license codes after some searching.
And ATIH11 is using less than half of CPU capacity, compared to ATIH2012. I can recommend it!
Hoping that I will not need to return to this BSOD thread, I wish everybody a Happy 2012 - I mean the calendar year...

Final notes from Germany:
After I was able to install the program I had to notice that the system speed was dramatically slower when before. Luckyly I got the message from Kjell and saw that AITH 2012 was really the cause of this problem. So I removed it from my ThinkPad T 61 and the system was as quick as before. So I will use AITH 2012 only for a complete system back up by using the AITH boot CD-ROM. Hope that Acronis will do some homework and we see a really working update in the next time...
Happy New Year to all of you!

As soon as ATIH 2012 suggested I accept the upgrade I let it upgrade itself. Almost immediately I started getting BSOD, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, 0x0000000a. This only happens when PC goes into Sleep. All I have to do is leave the PC idling for an hour or two and BSOD results. I too am running Windows 7 64bit.
When I shut down Acronis services and startup programs the PC was fine, but if I started up Scheduler 2 Service and Scheduler Helper the problem recurred.
Eventually I did a Windows restore to get back to previous version of ATIH. Surprisingly, I got a new, totally obscure Acronis error message:
Operation has failed.
See execution log for details.
I read elsewhere that if I disabled TrueImageMonitor.exe this error message would go away - and it did.
The question is: can I ever afford to accept another ATIH update?

John,
If you have the TIH install on your system, try a repair install, this should fix your first problem.
The log error message problem I thought didn't exist anymore with 2012, perhaps it is a left over from 2011 perhaps?
The cause in your case I thinkis the database got out of wack from what it thinks it should be seeing to what the restore has caused it to see.
I think remaking the tasks and schedules should fix it.

Recently updated my ATIH 2012 on Win XP with latest SP and updates. During backup I get the BSOD - display attached.
Any ideas?

There is a conflict on your system with the Adaptec SATA controller driver and Acronis SnapAPI disk drive filter.
I would suggest two things to try,
(Create a new full disk backup of your system using your Acronis Rescue Media if you don't have one!)
First.
Un-install 2012, and download the 2013-2011 Cleanup utility to clean up Acronis True Image entries on your system, being sure to not let the Cleanup Utility reboot your system until AFTER your check and remove any registry entries (only from the keys mentioned in the Cleanup Utility instructions!) leftover from the previous installs of True Image. Be careful in the registry. Post here if you need help! Be sure to post screen shots of the registry keys is not sure what to remove (if necessary).
Normally I would suggest re-installing 2012 at this point, but since the issue points to compatibility issues with the Adaptec driver, I would suggest the second step next, before installing 2012 again. When you are ready to re-install 2012, be sure to check online in your Acronis account, and verify if you have the latest version (build 7133) of the 2012 installer, if not download he most recent version available.
Second,
Determine which Adaptec hard disk controller you have in your system, and visit the Adaptec website and download the most current driver for it. It will not be "new", just the latest produced. Follow the procedure to update or re-install the driver, and then check for system stability.
