Unable to restore from backup

Thread needs solution

I have created a number of backups of my system disk using ATIH2012 within windows. Now when I attempt to recover from any of these backups, the restore operation fails with a "MFT bitmap corrupted error".

I have attempted to do the restore from within Windows, using the ATI boot cd, and using the F11 system start up option. I have tried to do the restore on two different computers as well, with the same result. What good is doing a validation if it doesn't really insure the integrity of the backup?

Validation of these backups complete successfully. How can there be a successful validation, yet the recovery operation fails? Is this issue specific to ATIH2012? I need to be able to recover from one of these backups, what options do I have?

Michael,

Run chkdsk X: /r on each "X" partition of your target disk. You can do this from the Windows installation DVD (choose install, repair computer, command prompt)

I have tried running the restore to multiple target disks. Two of which were brand new disks that had never had any data written to them. There is nothing to run chkdsk against.

Michael,
What size are these disks? Look at the new disks from inside the Windows Disk Management Console Graphical view. Are these disks labelled as "basic"?

The disks are 512GB and yes they are "basic".

You might want to review this thread. Is your computer a desktop?

Yes, my computer is a desktop.

I had previously seen the referenced thread and I didn't see anything there to help my situation. I am not using any USB disks. I am still confused as to how a abckup can pass validation, yet not be able to be recovered.

Validation is a series of checksums to make sure the data is written to the disk without any write errors. It does not check the content of the disk.

What type storage drive are you using where are your backups stored?

I have no good answers--just trying to help you find a workaround.

Do you have access to another storage disk and can you copy the backup to a different disk? I have no clue as to whether this would work but accepting the information as to what worked in the other thread.
