Confusion-Will trial version backup install a system on blank drive?
I have ATI 2012 Trial Version. I have made a Boot Disc and Backups of C:, Files and Email using the ATI interface and prompts. What I cannot figure out or get a straight answer to on other forums is the question of whether or not this Trial Version Boot Disc and backup will install a copy of the system onto a new blank Hard Drive.
Can someone enlighten me?

You know Duane I'd thought of that, but it didn't sound as simple and harmless in my head as it does from you. I will I don't suppose I can hurt it.
I'd still like some input if anyone has any experience.
Thanks.
Mudcrab I assume by Restore you mean that it will restore the whole drive on a blank new one. Thanks as well.
I'll come back and let you guys know.

I ran it and got nothing. The disc started up Acronis and I ran recovery but when I restarted without the disc I got the error message Boot Error pres Ctl-Alt-Del to restart.
I discovered that I may be able to run a clone in this live disc but I don't want to delete the data on the drive I want to store it on. Which got me thinking; can I just transfer this system straight across to the new drive if I connect it as an external and will it run as an internal if I can?
EDIT I put the new drive into the external to clone it and I find that it has loaded on it the recovery data- desktop, DOCS, Programs Files, Programs Files (x86), Users, Windows, BOOTSECT.BAK They all seem intact except the desktop. It only has two files in it, K60HT963KH9D.ata and K60HT963KH9D a text document in notepad. These 2 look like something to do with SeaTools. This is weird.
I will still try to clone directly to this drive from the live disc I just thought it important that I report this here in case I lose all ability to come online for a while.

Idontknow,
You may not have done the right backup to do the restore. The backup you need to create is a disk and partition backup of *all* the partitions on your system disk. To make sure:
- click on disk and partition backup,
- in the upper right corner click one the multiple partition blue link until you see the disks. Click on the box for your system disk,
- complete the backup onto a USB disk.
Once this is done, let us know whether the disk you want to restore to is bigger or smaller than the current one.

Thanks Pat L The new drive is the same as the old drive.
Thank You Grover. Can we stick with the terms in the program itself? I assume recover/restore has something do to with the backup.
I am guessing that you mean to convey to me that this recovery or restoration will only work on the drive backedup. Is that so?

To do recovery from a disk and partition backup, use the recovery CD. Boot the computer on it. You will notice that ATI running from the CD is very different from in Windows.
Most importantly, ATi from the CD will assign letter to the disk that are different from Windows. Your C:\System partition might be shown as D:\System. Look carefully at the disks and partition labels to find your backup file.
When ATI asks you what to restore, click the checkbox at the disk level. This will select all the partitions and the MBR+Track0. Make sure you select the right disk as the destination. IN the last step, check the box to restore the disk signature.

Pat,
I just saw instructions on how to backup multiple partitions. I have only backed up C:.
I am going to run a new backup of all partitions and place it on an external drive. Will this backup when I run recovery from the Acronis Boot disc, be placed in the destination drive as a working drive? (I saw the different drive letters when I tried recovery yesterday.)
If you give me too much info I'll get lost.
Thank You
EDIT It won't let me back up all partitions it prevents me from selecting the external drive as destination and only allows C:\ or D:\ (CD Drive)
EDIT2 weird I shut down ATIH and restarted it and now its allowing me to mak a backup of all partitions on the external. WOOHOO!

Figure 4: As part of the restore, when you select the target disk, also select the "Recover disk signature" option.

Thank You Grover!
I am writing this message from the new drive. I disconnected the external as it rebooted and there was an error message saying something about not being able to verify the recovery but my browsers opened and email opened. ? Docs folder looks all there and the machine is moving a lot faster.
Thank You Thank You Thank You
Now that this has worked I need to know should I do anything else? I am wondering if I need to make a clone just to be safe.

Oh yea I don't recall seeing recover disk signature. Hope that's not important.
EDIT I'm going to try a reboot to see what it does.
I rebooted and the icon (little monitor) that indicates Network and Sharing center is not there. I don't remember if it was there after I recovered.
Any clues folks? Taskbar Properties Notification area tab has Network greyed out.
On other thing. Why does this site indicate I am online when I am not logged in?
EDIT
I restarted again and Network was not greyed out in Properties this time so I have the icon back. There's a bug to fix. ALso I noticed that I was not shown as online before I logged in. So ??? not sure on that front.

As to whether you need to do another restore of the "Recover Disk Signature" option will depend upon what software you have installed. Some software such as Acronis and Adobie and others use the disk signature as a means of identification for purchased software. For now, you can do nothing and wait and see if any of your software asks to be reconfirmed, etc.
Should you need or decide to do restore the signature, here is the procedure.
1. Boot from the CD.
2. Select only the single mbr/track0 as what is to be restored.
3. The next screen should be where you select the new disk to receive the restore of the mbr.
Note the example in Figure 4 of posting #10 above. Select the new disk but also checkmark the option "Recover disk signature" which should be located in lower left corner.
If the option is not listed, it may appear on the next screen. There is NO reason to click the PROCEED button unless you find and check the "Recover Disk Signature". If you do not find the "REcover Disk Signature" option, then click the Cancel button to prevent the process from going forward.
Edit: Based on your #12 posting, I would restore the mbr/track0 plus checkmark the Recover Disk Signature. The old disk should not be attached for the first few boots following the restore.

PatL I didn't mean to leave you out Thank You as well.
EDIT
Can I remove Acronis from the new drive which I installed the full backup on?

What do you mean by removing Acronis? Uninstalling the app? Why do you think you might be able to do so?

What I mean is exactly that, remove Acronis from the new hard drive now that it is working. I was asking before I tried it in case it might harm the install. I don't like to just let programs I'm not using all the time sit on my machine.
I'm not sure how to respond to your last question.
I'm supposing that since the drive is now on this HD and working I can remove Acronis as it is no longer needed.

IdontKnow,
You can definitely uninstall 2012. This kind of software tends to leave some things behind (low level drivers for example). Do not attempt to clean this up manually or you will have the risk of BSOD. Manual clean up is doable, but risky.
You can do all backup and restore operations from the recovery CD, once you have established it works for you (which you did).

Thanks Pat L this seems it may be overly cautious but can I use the Cleanup Utility to remove it?
- Log in to post comments
Yes, you can use the Cleanup Utility. This utility cleans up everything that Acronis deemed safe to remove, but still leave some things in the system that you should not worry about. Of course, backups are these things we use to correct things that go wrong, aren't they?

I ran cleanup utility and it went fine. Can you tell me what "things in the system" are left and where to find them?
