Cannot boot TIH 2009 with Rescue CD created

Thread needs solution

I'm using True Image Home 2009 with XP Pro.

I successfully burned a Rescue CD using the True Image Home wizard (Tools > Create Bootable Rescue Media).

When I tried to do a test boot using the Rescue CD I ran into problems.

My computer's start-up screens show "Boot from CD/DVD" (x2), followed by "Starting Acronis Loader" then a screen showing two icons ie "Windows" and "Acronis True Image Home (Full Version)".

But the mouse cursor (a "hand" icon) is frozen on the Windows option and I cannot select the Acronis icon. Tried booting several times but get the same result.

I had a quick look at the forum topics before posting but could not find a boot problem the same as mine.

Would really appreciate advice as to how to fix this problem.

Thanks,

Terry

Does the keyboard also not work in the menu?

Have you tried downloading the ISO version from your Acronis account? It's based on a different loader, uses a different menu and usually contains updated drivers.

Hi, thanks for responding.

I tried every key on the keyboard...and those on my mobile phone. Nothing! :)

I saw mention of the ISO file solution when searching this forum before posting. But, despite looking everywhere in and around my Acronis Account and the Acronis web site in general, I can't find any reference to an ISO file that I can download.

Do you know exactly where I'd find this file, I'll try anything at this stage. I'm getting to the point where I'm one step off uninstalling the program and getting Norton Ghost. [Vent over]. :)

Cheers,

Terry

Terry,

If it's available for your version of TI, here's a post that shows where it is.

If it's not there, you would need to contact Acronis Support and request it (Live Chat is usually the quickest method).

Hi MudCrab,

Thanks, you've solved one problem for me, I need to contact Support for the ISO file as I don't have a Bootable Media tab in My Account page.

The last time I asked them for help (Feb 2009) they took five (5) weeks to get back to me, which is why I posted on the forum for assistance. Maybe their service has improved.

Thanks for your assistance, appreciated. It all seems like baby-steps at present but hopefully I'll soon be able to boot an Acronis rescue disk for when the 'Inevitable' happens. :)

Cheers,

Terry

MudCrab,

I contacted Support (Live Chat) as you suggested and was given advice and a link to download an ISO image file. I burned the image file to a CD and used it to boot my computer.

It looks like my problems may be solved as I can now access the TIH backup file on my external hard drive. However, I stopped midway without completing the process as the backup file is a copy of my C drive.

I took some of the attached screen shots as I went along as a picture is worth a thousand pizzas if it all went wrong. :)

Would appreciate it if you would check out the pics and hopefully confirm that it all looks ok to that point.

Thanks for your help to date.

Cheers,

Terry

Terry,

It looks normal to me. However, I would go ahead and at least validate the image when booted to the TI CD. This will let you know if TI can successfully read the file. It's not as good a test as doing a restore, but it's about as close as you can get.

MudCrab,

You said: "...I would go ahead and at least validate the image when booted to the TI CD".

Sorry, I don't understand. Will you please explain how I do that.

[Edit: Or, do you mean I can go a step or two further than I did before, see screen shot Forum_5 above. If so, is it obvious where I need to stop as I wouldn't want to innocently hit NEXT and then see that my C drive is being restored.] :)

Thanks,

Terry

Terry,

After you select the image (as in Forum_2), just choose the option to Validate the image (it's on the toolbar or you can right-click the image and select it from the pop-up menu).

Doing a verify/validation won't restore the image. It just reads it to make sure it's okay.

MudCrab,

I followed your directions and have validated the image!! :)

The final screen in the process said: "The archive was successfully checked".

It was annoying me that I'd bought a program (TIH 2009) capable of restoring my system in case of a disaster but I couldn't get it to work while I was waiting for Murphy's law to strike me.

So, thank you for your assistance in solving this problem for me, it's appreciated.

Cheers,

Terry

MudCrab,

An eerie footnote to my post above re Murphy's Law. On Saturday my computer wouldn't properly start up. Then I couldn't get it to boot using the ISO image CD.

Off to the PC shop to find out that my one-year-old single 500GB hard drive had 'died' completely. Turns out that it was one of an acknowledged faulty batch. The shop replaced it under warranty, with an apology.

With a new hard drive and a bit of fiddling around I got the Acronis ISO Image rescue disk to successfully(?) restore my C drive, the drive with all my programs/applications (non-data) loaded to it. I say "successfully" with some qualification because it may take me a while before I've used every program etc to see if there are any issues.

But at least I got operational again and did so without having to load a multitude of programs/applications onto my pc...and have to find all the licence keys etc.

You mentioned earlier that doing a restore is the only true way of knowing whether the rescue CD works or not. Well, I've done that...and it worked. Phew!! :)

Thanks again for your help. Without it I wouldn't have made a working rescue CD and would have had to manually restore everything on my C drive.

Cheers,

Terry
