1st differential doesn't need a previous full backup
hello
I think to have read ALL forum posts, guidelines, Helps but I still thought that First backup topic (new machine with any release of ATIH just installed) is never clearly explained
I always had the idea (due to "not exactly" user-friendly GUI and Help) that one must first do a complete backup, schedule it for repetition, e.g. 1/month, and ONLY AFTER one can set up an incremental or a differential, e.g. every day
(BTW, I don't even understand why the latter so underrated, considering its potential danger)
Well, after testing EaseUs Todo Backup, I understood that if you FIRST do a differential backup, this FIRST differential backup will be ALWAYS a FULL backup, AUTOMATICALLY, and clearly all next backups will be differential
so, if it's true for every ATIH release too, please tell it in relevant Help!!!
AND if it's not true, delete freely this post
;-)
BTW I tested EaseUs Todo Backup after I have had enough of your crappy ATIH 2012, but when I tested the EaseUs Todo Backup restore it didn't work perfectly, e.g. it removed .dat files that were essential for some of my CD-ROM dictionaries AND, more seriously, it corrupted the backup itself erasing 1 month of backups !!!
This is why I'm currently come back to ATIH: clearly an older one than ATIH 2012

Claudio,
Since ATi 2011, each backup is part of a backup task, that can be scheduled or not. Each task is set up at the get go as a full backup, incremental or differential backup. The first backup of a task is always a full. In the default backups schemes (eg "Version Chain"), the second backup will always be a full as well. In all other cases, the second backup will be an incremental or a differential.
In ATI 2010, you had the option of create a one off backup, and then "add" an incremental to that full. This is not possible with ATI 2011 and 2012, *except* from the recovery CD (which is essentially a 2010 version).
