Disc Activity on Shutdown

Thread needs solution

Hi

I have noticed that occasionally, after making a system backup, my Laptop takes a long time to shut down and the external drive that I made the backup to shows activity.

I assume that for some reason unknown to me it might be doing a verification, despite the fact that I have set ATI to verify immediately after making the backup and have disabled the monthly scheduled verifications.

I cannot find any reference to this odd behaviour in the help files or spplication guide. Can anyone tell me what might be going on here?

Is win set up to allow delayed writes to the external disk?

I have never heard of delayed writes. How do I check whether this is the case?

In the windows Device Manger, check the disk drive propeorties and be sure the box is checked for Optimize for Quick Removal and not checked for Optimize Performance.

Optimize performance allows dleayed writes, which speeds up comupter operation but means writes can happen in background at a slower pace.

Quick Removal should be the defualt for USB drives.

Thanks. I have just checked the drive in question and it is set for Quick removal so this could not have been the reason for the activity on shutting down the computer. Any other possible causes to do with Acronis?

Do you do torrenting from that drive, or any file sharing or media sharing?

Not that I am aware of. I have a Network set up through a Router with file sharing switched on but not for any of my external storage devices.

I do, however, use my External USB Hard Disc Drives on three machines mainly for making Backups - this Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium), a PC (Windows XP SP3) and a Netbook (Windows 7 Starter).

They are all set for QWuick Removal (the Windows Default setting).

windows file indexingl; windows System Restore info for that drive

Thanks. It won't be System Restore as I have that disabled on all my external drives. I will have a look and see if file indexing is enabled.

Double chacke the systemrestore status, if yo use the disk on more than one machine, the Sys restore status can revert.

System Restore is disbled on all external drives and on all computers.

None of the external drives are set for File Indexing.
